* Active Stations called for COMMENTS only

Solar Storm? Maybe so, but a very favorable storm indeed. We logged stations in WY, MT, MO, and IN tonight. Although the band was long, closer stations also did well. Welcome to five new stations tonight too: Rod KG7JAZ in Arcata,CA, Jim KM7H in Addy,WA, Dennis N7DHW in Sprague River,OR, Michael KM6KAQ in Altadena,CA, and Warren W4FLL in Carsen City,NV. And, Welcome back to Ralph WB6SDR, a long-time ORCA member. Five new stations in one session is a record. 41 stations on the log is also an ORCA record. Check-in was really busy tonight. We logged 37 Ops in 45min. Compiling our Roster entails a Copy/Paste operation between two applications; we can easily fall behind when ck-ins come too quickly. A few coat-tails or doubles are unavoidable during ck-in; some stations do not copy every station on the net. That’s HF radio.

A note to the newer stations: You’ve joined an eclectic and accomplished group of digital Ops. ORCA members are a diverse group of Amateurs. Many are leaders in their radio community and also their civic communities. Some are Scientists, University Professors, Programmers, and experts in many fields. There are lots of ARRL/ARES appointed and elected officials. It’s a highly qualified team. We would not be on-the-air every Tuesday evening w/o them. They ARE the net. We’re the Conductors, but w/o the dedicated Orchestra, we would not exist. You can learn all ORCA has to teach by observing how these Ops work the net. They know digital-net protocol and implement it perfectly. Hats Off to every one of them!

We had a number of solid signal reports in the Comment round. Signal reports are very useful for refining antennas. Most Amateurs are keen to improve antenna performance. Even after you’ve maxed your antenna configuration, regular feedback increases your knowledge of it’s coverage. Signal Reports and the Net Report test-image section reveal our station’s strength and weakness. Thanks for your contribution.

The recent storm related grid-down event in Texas is a wake-up for all EMCOMM Ops. Independent power for EMCOMM stations is vital. If you can’t stay on the air w/o commercial power, you won’t be working emergency traffic during emergencies w/o commercial power. EMCOMM stations need independent power sources. And, we need sufficient spares to keep our stations on-the-air.

Amateur digital networking may be nearing critical mass. We hear more often than ever about local VHF/UHF digital training nets. These net will lead many Ops to HF networking. It’s easier to learn digital net basics on VHF/UHF where interference is minimal, relative to HF. HF is more challenging, especially now at Solar Minimum. The VHF/UHF nets are also very important to HF nets. They’re our natural partners for providing local information to the wider HF nets and bringing regional/national information to the local community.

Eventually, the Amateur community will connect thru VHF/UHF/HF digital networks. While we train and practice to support our Civic agencies, we are concurrently poised to support our own radio communities. We are also our own clients, so to speak. Sanctioned by no agencies, we need no permission to activate in support of Civic agencies or the needs of our Amateur community. Eventually, we hope to be training and practicing with other HF digital net. We need a digital HF Traffic net mid-USA to link the East & West coast nets. When we accomplish this, we’ll be able to pass traffic Coast2Coast w/o engaging any other traffic system.

Mindy sent the 2nd test image tonight; I changed the image name and my closing macro was not updated. The images are from different antennas tonight. Our doublets, 210’@80′ & 135’@ 145′, are 70′ and about 90deg apart.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex209.txt’, an FLDIGI/PC-EDITOR/FLAMP Exercise.
If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in the Traffic round with FLAMP.

People are still repairing fractured water pipes in Texas, two weeks after five days of freezing WX w/o
power. At one point 5 million people were effected. We wonder how many Texas Amateurs were also
w/o radio station power. Frozen Texas is a wake-up for EMCOMM Ops. It’s much better to be prepared
than to scrounge and implement during emergencies. While weighing the crisis in Texas, factor in
current Weather Scientist’s conclusion that our Solar Cycles are entering a Maunder Minimum.
Progressively colder WX appears to be on our horizon, possibly lasting three decades.

Here are two actions that will be helpful in the future. Review your EMCOMM station with a focus on
sustainability. Power is foremost, but we should also consider back-up hardware/software/etc., for
quick repair/replacement when we have only what’s on-hand. Stations able to remain on-the-air will
be those prepared for extended emergencies, as just occurred in Texas.

Another strategic activity is further connecting existing digital nets, HF/VHF/UHF, and establishing
an HF digital Traffic net mid-USA to bridge the Coastal nets. With a mid-USA HF digital net, we can
pass traffic directly, Coast2Coast, independent of other systems. There are capable digital Ops mid-USA
already engaged in digital nets and capable of standing-up a mid-USA HF digital net. We’re prepared to
support a mid-USA digital net with protocol, structure, and what else we can. Existing digital nets will
benefit by appointing net members as liaison to other digital net. We will share information more
quickly and cross-pollinate the nets with experienced digital Ops. Eventually, we’ll have a solid
National Network of digital nets. Besides increasing our NBEMS/EMCOMM capabilities, we’ll be
much better positioned to serve our Amateur membership in ordinary times and emergencies.

Have you tried the experimental OFDM mode developed by John KF4YFD? Dave W1HKJ has
temporarily added it to the FLDIGI Alpha v4.1.18.11 for testing. Alpha versions available @:

http://www.w1hkj.com/alpha/fldigi/

Try it out: John needs our feedback. The slowest mode, OFDM-500 is easily twice as fast as MFSK-32.
FEC is supposed to be more robust than MFSK and OFDM is said to copy 100% with fading as long as 2sec.
Give it a try when you have time and send John your observations. Email John @: kl4yfd@gmail.com

Thanks for emailing the ORIGINAL Signal Evaluation images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com (another file
location & manipulation exercise) Your test images reveal NCS path to each station.

— start —
[WRAP:beg][WRAP:crlf][WRAP:fn 20210302.txt]Greetings to all at ORCA, I am running the propane heater tonight while camped here by the side of a siding road off of NM HWY 491.

I successfully received the AmRRON Intel Brief for March 2, 2021 from K4KBT NCS of the Eastern AmRRON training net. This was quite a feat in that s/n was at minus 6. I was patient and listened for everyone’s fills and got up to 80%, then after net, requested the remainder. Whoopie!!

Some changes are occuring here in Gallup; both at the hospital and in respect to the weather. The percentage of patients that are COVID positive is dropping. We are down to about 20 percent of inpatients now. For a long time, we had been over 30 percent COVID positive. In addition, State inspectors have come around and have broken the long-standing practice of disinfecting N95 masks under UV light. We now are being told to use the N95 mask only once, then discard it. That surely means that the available supply of N95 masks has finally reached a level sufficient to provide all care-givers with a new N95 mask each time we enter a COVID room. This is a very welcome change, for the UV light disinfection technique causes the N95 mask to STINK after it has been disinfected.

I have abandoned my $200 per month RV spot for two reasons. First, we lost a per diem US tech, and now I must take call every other weekend and will be on the swing shift every other week. That means I will have to practically “live” at the hospital, so no chance of cycling or walking to work any more. It also means that I will only be able to get onto ORCA every other week. Also, the weather is warming up, with a hight today of 49 degrees; although the nights are still quite cold — down into the single digits last night.

BEST WISHES TO ALL ON ORCA!![WRAP:chksum 9FF2][WRAP:end] — end —

Doug went from the dinner table to the frying pan with a rapid-fire ck-ins… 37 no easy feat! Unable to get sig report for stns at the beginning. ORCA welcomes Rod KG7JAZ in Arcata,CA, Jim KM7H in Addy,WA, and Dennis N7DHW in Sprague River,OR. Welcome back to Ralph WB6SDR, good to cu on the WF Sri to Gene W1EEP… I didn’t see ur ck-in and told Doug to scratch you off the roster… my bad

I’m looking forward to experimenting with the new OFDM modes. Fingers are crossed that OFDM-500 is a workhorse with possible signal size/band freq changes on the horizon. Anyone wanting to do some testing of this mode, let us know.

Great to see all Ops on the WF tonight… you guys had us on our toes over here! Really appreciate working with you guys and the fine job you all do checking in & during the net. We are a great team!

Wishing everyone good health & look forward to working with you all again soon.
