The first Tuesday ARC meeting in Humboldt Co,CA and the World Series didn’t limit the net tonight. We still had ten check-ins and an active net. Mindy W7ZAP conducted the weekly FLAMP practice exercise. You can run this weekly exercise too if you like. Conducting this small portion of the net provides practice passing digital traffic with multiple Ops. In emergency conditions, you may be the most experienced digital Operator and find yourself as NCS. I think all you you would do well.

Also, you are welcome to conduct the REPORT round when sending traffic in FLAMP. I usually do this for you. Let me know before sending your traffic.

The weekly FLAMP file this week is ORCA_ex4.ZIP. You need to decompress this file and follow the instructions to edit, rename, save, and resend it in FLMSG. I checked to be sure all OS’s could decode ZIP files, but I’m not certain of the info. I do know that both Win & Linux have native apps that decode ZIP’s. I’m not certain about Mac. If you can’t decode the file with the apps you have, don’t bother and send any traffic you like next week. It’s just a file-manipulation exercise to give us practice working with files in the OS.

Please think of these exercises as options. We don’t have assignments. Do them if you want the challenge and practice, but don’t feel pressed. We’re just looking to make our practice relevant to conditions and situations you’ll encounter in regular and emergency digital traffic. Set your own goals for growth and proficiency. As always, I welcome your comments and suggestions.

Dave K7DV checked in just before closing from Idaho Falls,ID. He was having antenna issues and missed check-in but he copied and CONFIRMED the weekly FLAMP file. Dave usually copies the net well and has a good signal here in SW/OR. His home net is the Idaho ARES/RACES Digital Net, run by Bliss K7RUG. An exercise Bliss conducted was the inspiration for our file-manipulation exercises.

Thanks for working with us tonight. I hope to see you again next Tuesday.

ORCA Announcements 01/nov/16

Tonight, our weekly FLAMP exercise distributes a file manipulation

exercise for next-net practice traffic. This exercise simulates a

‘Request for Information’ and employes features in FLMSG/FLAMP and

apps in your OS. It entails decompressing a received ZIP file on

your station PC & editing, renaming, saving, & resending with FLMSG.

This is your traffic for next week; send it in FLMSG.

Another aspect of file manipulation exercises is writing and parsing

instructions. Instructions need to be clear and concise. Reading and

following them carefully saves recontact for clarification.

If your NBEMS/EMCOM group has exercises you think would be useful

here on ORCA, please outline them for me. Our current file

manipulation exercises are variations of an exercise conducted on

the Idaho ARES/RACES Digital Net by Bliss W7RUG/NCS.

Weekly Net Report usually posted next day

Corporate resiliency is derived from three specific processes: awareness, action and preparation. Most executives recognize the impacts of known events such as, fires, floods, cyberattacks, workplace violence, etc., and have developed plans for dealing with such events.

Become aware, understand necessary actions and their influence on time, and prepare today for a crisis of tomorrow. Your organization’s reputation and value depend on it.

K7KY and ORCA de N6IET in Los Angeles

I’m running 30 watts tonight.

Some general comments about signals:

Mindy, your signal is usually on par with Doug’s, but not tonight.

I’m wondering if something is wrong with your antenna again.

You’re s/n is consistently 10 dB weaker than Doug’s.

Doug is 100% print, and you are barely 20%. In fact i couldn’t

ever hear you call my callsign for a flamp Report. I just had to

send arR fniiaa &asump in when i thought it was my turn.

Other than that, Bill was also very poor copy here, as was Bob.

Doug, you were averaging 0 to 10 dB s/n.

That’s it for tonight. Sorry to have missed last week. We had

our monthly club meeting.

73 de N6IET

N6IET FB Rick No worries on missing nets… we’re always glad to see you here… Ant’s Mindy’s ant is abt 70′ and 90deg from mine and usually does nearly the same we’ll give it an inspection… tu BREAK WA7HHE OK Brad what you have from UT? < K7KY

K7KY and the net, really enjoying the net tonight, running 35 watts into a G5RV up 30 feet, K6QOG and my self are enjoying using our 146.980 repeater for a talk freq. Have received Mindy’s msg in FLAMP but see where I need to purchace WinZip to be able to unzip the message, Mindy you really threw me a curve there Hi Hi

All the best of 73’s to all on the net tonight

WA7HHE Oh Oh… I didn’t mean for anyone to have to buy software… I looked up ZIP files on the net and believe all OS’s can unzip this compression… Linux has a built in unzipper… If you have to buy something, I’d skip it it’s not really important… we’re trying simulate situations where you are doing tasks that you would also be doing in a real net… let me know if you can’t get it decompressed w/o

spending $ tu BREAK K6QOG OK Bill what u have?
