Tonight, the band was an improvement over the last few weeks, but still unfavorable to more distant stations. And, ck-in was light. Humboldt Ops have their ARC meeting on the first Tuesday. Summer WX brings activities that compete with radio nets. Eight ck-ins and five active Ops tonight. We lost Brad WA7HHE & Doug KA7FOO before the Comment round. Only Bob W7GBB, Mindy W7ZAP, & I were left standing. Good thing Bob ck-ed in tonight. He’s not had an adequate path to Brookings for awhile now. W/o Bob, Mindy & I would have been talking to ourselves in the Comment round.

Turns out Doug KA7FOO’s laptop overheated and quit. The temperatures in Reno,NV have been way hot lately. The laptop recovered and Doug came back just after closing and sent his comments in FLMSG. I don’t know what happened for Brad, our only UT station tonight. The band has not favored UT these last couple months. They often account for a third or more of ORCA ck-ins, and usually have solid signals. During the FLAMP exercise, Brad relayed block 5 of the exercise message for Bob in WA and was solid thru the Traffic round.

Mindy called ck-in tonight, preparing for next week when she will be NCS. Next Tues is my return date with the surgeon. I’m having my rt mid finger amputated at the first joint. Again, no typing for a few weeks. This time, my relearning curve will be a bit tougher with a third of my finger missing. I’ll have to reach further for 8,i,k, & ,. Maybe the VA will make me a typing prosthesis.

Jaye KE6SLS missed the net for an ARC meeting, but monitored and emailed the test image below. Howard KB6NN was also at the meeting, he too monitored and recorded the net. Jaye & Howard have been with us since the early days of ORCA.

RX: KE6SLS CA

Thanks for your patience with the Template exercises. Templates aren’t critical to handling digital traffic, but they’re very useful for saving time and effort while filling out forms. You can make Templates for most of the forms very easily in the ‘Template’ menu. Your ideas for other useful traffic handling exercises are welcome. Does your NBEMS group have any routines or solutions for digital traffic that we could explore on the net? We’d like to know.

Thanks for taking time out of your evening to practice with us tonight. We hope to see you again next Tuesday evening in digital mode. 73 Doug K7KY

ANNOUNCEMENTS 01 August 2017

Tonight’s Optional FLAMP exercise distributes ‘ex34.txt’, an

FLMSG/FLAMP exercise using an ICS-213 form and the Template

we distributed the last three weeks, ‘ORCAtemplate.213T’.

You need this Template in place to complete today’s optional exercise.

After opening FLMSG ICS-213 form, LOAD this template from the ICS-213

‘Template’ menu. Complete the exercise instructions and send the file

to NCS during TRAFFIC using FLAMP, or send your own practice traffic,

or QRU.

The FLAMP exercises provide experience in parsing instructions on-the

-fly and working within your PC file system while engaged in net

activities. Emergency messages may require an immediate response.

NOTE: You can configure your Band Pass Filter to improve signal-to-noise

ratio during poor band condx. I set my BPF to 970hz for noisy condx.

I usually run the net with the filter on. The exception is ck-in time

when stations often ck-in with VideoID on the waterfall. 970hz is too

narrow to also read callsigns on the waterfall, so I begin the net w/o

BPF until I complete ck-in. At 970hz I can still switch to a mode like

FMSK-64 w/o losing content. For wider modes, I turn BPF off.

If you change modes, remember to activate TxID so all stations follow.

Return to net working-mode when finished and turn TxID off.

Net Report posted as soon as we can…
