Summer band condx continue to hinder propagation while enabling outdoor activities, home maintenance projects, vacations, etc. We usually log fewer stations in Summer. Tonight’s log is small with only 4 stations working the NBEMS Exercise. The Exercise question, list Idaho station on the Roster, was a bust. But at 0319z, moments before closing when daylight was fading in Idaho, Aaron KI7LOQ checked-in from Boise.

Thanks for your concern about Mindy W7ZAP. She’s recovering nicely from last week’s surgery.  She’s been walking around our property and even venturing into the neighborhood. She’ll have another week or so of light duty, but she’s ready to publish the Net Report. We deeply appreciate our radio friends.

Summer also brings Fire Season and wild fires have become more frequent and destructive. They consume enormous resources and destroy lives and property. Summer lightning is often their source, some by carelessness, and some intentionally. Randy K7AGE tipped us to a very useful Fire-info tool for Apple & Android smartphones: https://www.watchduty.org/

“Watch Duty is a service, not an app, powered by over 60 volunteers – firefighters, dispatchers, and first responders – who diligently monitor radio scanners and other official sources 24 hours a day to send you the most up-to-date information. We have created dozens of internal collaboration tools from messaging to alerting systems to be notified of every fire start. At any given time there are dozens of reporters monitoring everything. Rest assured that we are always on watch duty and we will keep you up to date when it matters most.”

A few years ago, we ran two emergency nets supporting California colleagues working major wildfires. In those days, we often practiced sending Fire-map images. With wildfires becoming more frequent and destructive, we’re preparing to again practice with fire-map images. To transmit maps that are useful as received, they must be crisp and clear. Black & White are best. We’ve learned a lot about preparing Fire-maps already; we’ll review what we know and increase our image transmission skills through practice.

When we practice image transmission, we’ll publish map images instead of ORCAtest images. We’ll see how useful the images are as received. Remember that NVIS antennas usually do well for nearby stations.  NVIS antennas are close to the ground and usually easier to construct. They’re EMCOMM friendly.

Hats-Off to Matt N6FPV for a 90% score on his Extra Class exam last weekend.

^rANNOUNCEMENTS

Mindy W7ZAP is recovering from last Wednesday’s surgery. She’s still on very light duty, but walking a bit and feeling better every day. I’m learning what it takes to partially fill her shoes. There’s numerous have-to homestead chores. As I age, she does more of what I used to do. I’m only doing the have-to’s and it keeps me hopping. Thanks for your concern, thoughts, and prayers. It was her first time in a hospital; may it also be her last.

Tonight’s NBEMS Exercise features the FLMSG ICS-309 form. This form is used to log Emergency and Traffic net messages. The Communications Log/Message’ box is very small for recording messages, but perfect for recording digital file names. CONFIRMED files are already recorded.

Last week’s Oregon Spring SET Exercise was enlightening. For the inter-county HF net, Mindy was the Liaison station. I was HF intra-county Liaison net NCS. We found it difficult to log stations and their full message while working phone. Digital operations are much easier to log. Instead of recording the message, we simply record file names. FLAMP logs successful file transfers automatically.

I’ve had a number of station issues the past two months. Transitioning from Windows to Linux hasn’t been easy and it’s not over yet. Something has gone astray on ORCA & WDN nearly every week. I still have antenna work to do and Linux Audio issues to sort, but I’m making progress.

Next is an NBEMS traffic-handling Exercise w/Doug K7KY < W7ZAP<@TXRSID:on>

I passed the Extra this past weekend! Got a 90% on it, so glad to have finally got that done. I guess only thing left to do is become VE

Looking forward to Field Day coming up this weekend, I will be operating digital mode station at our local field day.

Glad to hear Mindy is recouperating, I hope for a speedy recovery!

Solstice is TOMORROW! End of July should start bringing us some
better cndx. I didn’t hear Bruno nor Brad’s chk-ins at all. Notice
how light the ARRL CW practice signal is tonight? ARRL is sending a
1500W signal on a very large antenna.

Field Day is this weekend. I’ve decided to forgo working it this year,
but will enjoy listening in. I really hope the high bands pay off for
all the participants.

Looks like ARC in Utah this evening. Funny how quiet it is on these
nights. :)

Mindy, especially nice to see you on the WF. I hope you are bouncing
back well!

Stay well, practice often, and make sure to have some fun doing it!

GE all.

Great to see Mindy is up and up and at’em after her surgery.

While reviewing the Radiogram exercises from last week’s net I noticed something odd that I had not noticed before. When dragging and dropping a new Radiogram file into an existing, completed form any fields completed by the former station but left blank by the latter showed through on the latter’s copy. For example, I first loaded W7ANC’s exercise, then loaded KE6SLS’ and was shown a Radiogram signed by KE6SLS with the station origin of Goldendale WA. I loaded KS6M’s exercise, then followed with N6FPV’s and saw the form from N6FPV but signed by KS6M.

Using an older version of FLMsg drew the same results. The only way to know I was reading the information correctly was to open a new instance of FLMsg for each individual report. Slow and messy. I imagine that this is likely the case with other forms in FLMsg as well. Easy to see how this could be problematic in a serious circumstance. To avoid such a possibility In an actual critical situation, it may be a good idea to fill in ALL fields with some info even if it is only “NA” when submitting your form.

Congrats Matt!

Lost a good friend and neighbor this past Sunday! He had a house fire and went back in to rescue his dog who was safe in his pick up truck. He didn’t come back out despite frantic efforts from family and friends to guide him to safety!! Now his dog doesn’t move from the truck.

Trying to help his parents/close friends as best we can. Finding parts to restore well water to the farm has been a challenge but we should finish that up tomorrow.

Was able to read FLA exercise in RX pane and complete despite 90%

ORCA < K7KY I spend a good part of today on my station/antenna/software so nothing would go wrong tonight. Rats! I’ve had enough of Linux learning for a lifetime. All seemed good, but FLDIGI’s logging program choked. Many of my Macros depend on the logging variables. Mindy had to take over quickly. Good thing we’ve lots of practice.

Next week, I’ll be back on Windows. I’m reluctant, but tired of issues and problems during nets. These days, I’m nervous b4 nets. No wonder, something has gone astray nearly every net the past few weeks. Maybe when I master Rpi4/4 I’ll be ready for another run @ Linux.

Station/antenna issues have been constant the last few weeks. My new kbd is just a tiny bit tighter than the old one and that small difference means retraining.

Congratulations! to Matt N6FPV for his Extra Class license.

Sorry to hr abt Bruno’s neighbor. As an ex Firefighter, it hits home. BTN < Doug K7KY

Thank you for all the sweet thoughts, prayers, and well wishes! All went well and I’m feeling much better with each passing day. Doug has been a sweetheart and taking excellent care of me, and I’ve been good about not trying to do too much too soon. I’ve been going for little walks around the property and now in the neighborhood, which has been nice.
