Band condx were favorable or terrible tonight depending on where you live and time of day. Jaye KE6SLS in Eureka,CA and John KS6M in Oakland,CA CONFIRMED OFDM-500F w/one transmission. While John had a pipe-line to NCS initially, by the end of Comments he lost NCS completely. His 1st image is pixel perfect; he didn’t copy the 2nd image. We also lost contact with Matt N6FPV in Scotia,CA. It’s not unusual for us to lose contact with nearby stations in Winter, but this year, it’s a mixed bag. One way paths are more common than usual.

Note that the Transcontinental Digital Test Net ran this evening in an even slower mode, OLIVIA-8/500, 30wpm. Our Eastern colleagues favor error-tolerant modes. OLIVIA-8/500 & THOR-11 are very tolerant of mis-tuning, enabling stations way off net frequency to decode. Modes like MFSK-32 are much less tolerant of mis-tuning. MFSK-32 can decode signals up to 16hz off-freq. That’s <16hz in favorable condx. Frequency errors hinder decoding. In marginal band condx, decoding falters at much smaller frequency errors than 16hz. 10hz off-freq tonight decoded 75%. Frequency management is one of the 1st Amateur Radio skill we learn.

Ending ORCA DIGITAL NET was a difficult decision. Many of you have been with us since, or close to, the beginning. The Rainbows Canyon ARC Ops in Utah joined us soon after inception. They were onboard b4 Steve K6ETA joined. Steve was with us 2yrs b4 standing up Western Digital Net. Some Ops see WDN as a stand alone net, not realizing it’s another portal of the same network. Compare ORCA/WDN Rosters and you’ll see WDN logs 95% the same Ops as ORCA. It’s one network w/two portals.

WDN NCS Ops are considering what, if any, of ORCA’s events can be incorporated in WDN. Is ORCA’s Tuesday sked better for WDN than Thursday? With lots to consider and the Christmas Holiday already here, these are issues for next year. When considering the way forward, don’t forget what we’ve accomplished together. We didn’t run a successful NBEMS Training Net by fearing change and innovation. We’ve been bold and decisive; our results speak for themselves. Do your best to retain the essence of our network; stay active and engaged. The future looks to be challenging. Your experience and skills may be needed. Practice regularly; polish your skills. Your Country and Community may need you soon.

Doug needs to re-boot… I’ll TX AnnouncementsANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s NBEMS Exercise features FLMSG Form ICS-213. Mindy W7ZAP is Exercise NCS.

ORCA DIGITAL NET spun-off from ORCA EMERGENCY NET in Mid-2013 when we routinely passed practice traffic back-n forth HF<>VHF. We
practiced passing emergency traffic from a community VHF net to/from a regional HF net. For us, this was easily accomplished by switching
multi-mode FT-857D memory channels. Only Mindy & I could do this. The other Ops didn’t have VHF/UHF in their HF radio; they transferred
the message to/from a VHF system by thumbdrive, both cumbersome and time consuming.

Another method to move HF<>VHF traffic quickly is configuring a Signalink for HF & VHF radios. I have two Signalinks configured on my
station, one for Yaesu FT-857D & one for Elecraft KX3. I switch Signalinks in Configure/Soundcard/Devices by selecting (2-USB Audio CODEC)
or (4-USB Audio CODEC). Both these radios are multi-mode and don’t need this arrangement. It’s an example of how to switch between HF &
VHF with less time/effort than thumbdrive-transfer. In emergencies, WDN may need to pass traffic to local VHF nets.

26/Dec/23 is the day after Christmas. Many of us will be traveling, visiting, or relaxing. That session is cancelled. Next session, 19/Dec/23
wraps 11yrs of ORCA DIGITAL NET.

Next is the NBEMS Exercise w/Mindy W7ZAP

Solstice -9

Three back to back sunny days. Unscheduled but thoroughly enjoyed! I
put a very heavy load on my system every Monday night. I run an APRS
net all day until 19:15PT, packet net, SSB Emergency net, Digital
Emergency net, VHF Emergency net, UHF Emergency net, then a wide area
VHF recap Emergency net. Every other Monday, I also host a 75M SSB
net beginning at 21:00. So, EVERY PHOTON MATTERS at this QTH :)

#1 puss has been suffering from an eye infection. Took three weeks to
get a vet to help us. IDK what it is with vets of late, but soon, I
won’t be able to affort one :(

Noise that took out so many nets last week has vanished, grateful for
that! However, shortly after chkn in, NCS went from 14db down to -2db.
I already have that feeling band will be rough tonight,

75/80m goes crazy long around 20:00PT. I can tell it’s happening
earlier as we approach solstice. Just copied the n5qdh from NM! Matt
n6fpv called me last week after we both lost all copy locally. Could
not copy k7ky, n6fpv, or ae6lj! So far tonight, I still have 100%
cpy all active stations. 10:15 and NCS sig dropped N2 negative db.

Hope our Utah stations have a rewarding ARC meeting/party.

NBEMS Pro Tip: Save your FLM Log files/working files on the Desktop.
If you are forced to do emergency reboot, they will be ez to access and
save time.

Stay well, practice often, and make sure to have some fun doing it!

Temps have been in mid 40s so thought I could dig down in the new greenhouse
and cut into the water line. Everything went well digging it up and got one
side of the T glued into the water line then cut the other end and ended up a
bit short intead of a 1/2 inch into the T I got 1/4 inch. Darn, now I will have to wait till spring to test it and hope it will hold. All the wood
cutting I
did in the fall paid off. Have a nice hot wood stove going tonight.

Good band tonigt I copied everyone and almost got all of W7WXV and KK6RJR call sign even got K0KEX w/o any problems

Forgot to mention I have another antenna good from 40M to 70cm besides the Dipole in Reno.

Welcome back Cowan N5QDH in Farmington,NM. Good work Mike KK7IVZ on NBEMS exercise.

This was a challenging net w/stn issues. Doug & I had to pass the net back’n’forth, but all turned
out well in the end. Looks like band is fading for some stns.

Well, looks like this is the 2nd to last ORCA DIGITAL NET, next week will be the last net. I hope to
see you on the WF next TUES. However, being so close to the holidays, I expect folks to be busy
w/family. Hard to believe this is coming to en end so soon. Tnx to all of you for your participation
& support. I’m honored to call you friends & collegues. I surely had no idea when I decided to learn
NBEMS with local Ops, that it would be such a fulfilling & challenging journey. Tnx to all of you for
your friendship & encouragement with this net. And a BIG tnx to my sweetheart Doug K7KY for all the
radio fun all these years!

See you next week!

Missed RCARC Christmas party tonite, still can’t sit very long. 45 minutes drive is too much at this point. 15 minutes is 2 long sometimes,
hence QNX.

Got a new USB C hub 4 new Mac, fixed link 2 Signalink so bck w/nw Mac.

Should hv ckd active, was abl 2 stay at STA all net :-) !

I interrupted the exercise !!!? My fat finger clicked on Log QSO macro while Mindy was checking for reports and the macro took it sweet time
to stop. My apologies.
