Nice work everyone! We persevered thru an amazing amount of lightning. It was all over the map and very close to NCS and many members. Early in the net, it was striking very close; we were uncertain about continuing. Hats-Off to everyone for another orderly net in very challenging condx. The net ran as it did because everyone was on their game.

Poor band condx impelled Don KJ7VGV to drive a couple hours to his desert cabin where his signal has better coverage than his station in Reno,NV. Hindered by surrounding lightning strikes, he did an outstanding job with the NBEMS Exercise. Matt N6FPV in Scotia,CA was unable to copy Don. Matt did his best to cope. Not hearing Don, NCS at the time, he sent VidID @ 2000wf instead of his CALL @ 1500. This didn’t interfere with Don who was transmitting. Of course, Don can’t see VidID while transmitting, but there was no interference and the Exercise unfolded smoothly. Very smoothly for condx. We copied his VidID, but couldn’t respond; we had turned Net Control over to Don.

This morning, we tested HF frequencies for the upcoming SET Exercise here next Tuesday, 13/Jun/23. I was struck with the difficulty we had communicating on 40 & 80m Phone. I imagined how much better we would do digitally. Our County spurns Winlink and FLDIGI and sees the three annual State Exercises as practice. The new crew could reorder things; we hope to help them into Century 21 with digital training.

Band condx in the last two months really showcase the value of digital operations and the importance of Relays. We’re becoming adapt at both. For next week’s SET, we’ve asked ORCA Ops in three states to participate. Because of our proximity, we often have difficulty connecting HF Phone with County EOC 35mi North. Relays are the solution. Usually, our antennas are up to the task, but not always.

Another solution for close-by HF contacts are NVIS antennas. They’re relatively simple and easy to erect. They can eliminate dead zones; constructed correctly, they increase signal gain. We’d like to add one for ORCA. It might fill skip zones for stations close to NCS.

We were surprised to receive ORCAtest images from John KD0NBH & Rick K0KEX in Missouri. John had 100% RX on Brad WA7HHE’s FLAMP file, and Rick also copied Brad and Bruno KG7VVN’s FLAMP file, and Mindy W7ZAP’s FLMSG 100%. Nice work all around. Our MO colleagues are not making the ORCA roster in these difficult band condx, but they’re out there working to copy the net. Hats-Off to our distant colleagues!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s NBEMS Exercise, conducted by Don KJ7VGV, features an FLMSG ICS-213 form. Our NBEMS Exercise is limited to 12 stations. We try to limit the
net to an hour. If you’re working these Exercises silently and checking your work in the after-net Monitor’s Session, it may be time to move to Active
participation. You’ll know when you’re ready. Moving from working silently to Active participation involves paying close attention to NCS. Exercises
progress briskly; mentally, you want to be a few seconds ahead of the net.

Veteran ORCA Ops make the NBEMS Exercises look easy and they are easy when you have some experience. Some of these Ops have been working
them for 9-10 years. Digital operations are more demanding than Phone and NBEMS traffic-handling is more complex than digital QSOs. There a lot of
software and operational knowledge involved. Be patient w/yourself and persist. It’s worth the effort. When you’ve mastered NBEMS Exercises, you’re
welcome to conduct them as Don and Bruno KG7VVN are doing currently.

We’ve been working with our County Amateur colleagues preparing for Oregon SET next Tuesday. Our coastal topography makes communications with
County EOC difficult. Too much terrain for 2m and too close for reliable HF. As you would expect, we do best with 80 & 40m. Even there, it’s sketchy.
Why? Not many NVIS antennas in the mix. NVIS doesn’t get out far, but does an excellent job within it’s footprint. NVIS is known for having no dead
zones. NVIS is the antenna of choice for most EMCOMM operations.

NVIS antennas are simple and easy to erect in the field. ‘At a height of .15 to .2 wave, over excellent ground, gain can approach 7 dbi, straight up;
https://kv5r.com/ham-radio/nvis-antennas/nvis-page-3/. In the ’60’s, the Gov’t researched NVIS antennas extensively in the jungles of Viet Nam. Some
of their research was done @ 3.560mhz, very near our favorite 80m frequency. Two soldiere could erect an 80m dipole in 15min. Jungle ground was
perfect and signals weren’t diminished by the thick jungle canopy. Testing was @ 15w. We’d like to add an NVIS antenna for ORCA DIGITAL NET. NCS
would be better copied by nearby stations; we may not hear them, but Relays are prominent in our skillsets.

Next is an NBEMS traffic-handling Exercise w/Don KJ7VGV < K7KYh

I found a TI-83 plus calculator for $1 at a local thrift shop today, very excited for such a find 😄.

Been cramming to take the extra test in a few weeks, looking forward to it, its not as easy as general 😉.

Bummer I missed out on exercise, I had no copy at all of KJ7VGV, was hoping NCS would relay it but since I didn’t hear me called for file report I didn’t
have a chance to report no copy.

I put the tip from John, KS6M, concerning FLAmp presentation into use here tonight. Learning of pro tweaks like that really make my day. Thanks!
Something tells me we are all missing out when KS6M reports a lack of comments for the session. BTW, I generally copy John down there in Oakland
100% here and would be happy to relay.

Copied KE6SLS’ FLAmp 100%. Of course we are only about 50 miles apart.

Rotten start to the day today with a 2 hr bugger of a dentist session.
I had planned to be at HARC meeting, but lingering effects of the
dentist decided I’ll be home tonight 🙁

I am having issues copying several stations tonight.  I know we have
lots of lightning EVERYWHERE today/tonight.

“NVIS is known for having no dead zones” and then there is REALITY!

One note for aNCS is PLEASE leave your TxID ON.

The next 60 days will continue to be quite trying with 80m propagation.

In the mean time, the the marine layer has gone to sea, leaving a nice
sky for sunset viewing!  Yesterday we had similar wx.  The evening sky
cleared and there was such an amazing sunset, I shut down my shack and
went to my patio and just admired the pure beauty of it!  I think god
decided to paint a portrait and I saw it!

Stay well, practice often, and make sure to have some fun doing it!

Plugging alng w/gardening. So far no hard freeze this spring!? Very unusual, always expect it before June 15. Young birds and rabbits are coming out.
Rain almost daily, also unusual. Cut the last wood load for this spring, two more this fall.

Thunderstorms today and most of this week. Driving out to the cabin got caught in heavy rain on the highway.

is done. Now on to another wall this week on the West side. Hope everybody stayes safe with all these storms in
the area.

No lightning here for now. Had a lot of rain during net.

Frequent static crashes tonight. Looked at lightningmaps.org and see many storms out there. Stay safe. We fried 2 radios and other electronic equipment years ago when offshore lighning struck and it wasn’t even that close. Lesson learned the hard way. Uh-oh! Getting close to home now.

Here’s the breakdown of NBEMS RX by modes:
THOR-50×1: 3 stns (+ KY/ZAP)
MFSK-32: 2 stns
THOR-22: 1 stn

Excellent job by Don KJ7VGV/P running the NBEMS exercise in challenging condx. Good improvisation adding THOR-22. Had to think back to my CERT days years ago to recall the acronym for ICS. Good to dust off the mental cobwebs.

VARA QRM @ 1700.

Mindy W7ZAP

That was for aNCS  not NCS.   you have been doing great, however, aNCS turned of TxID after initial turn over, and a lightning crash took that out, so I
was still in the original mode as he started taking reports 😄 Took a while for me to realize that the mode had been changed here.

Okay, I need 3 fills there.   Ready?

KE6SLS  < K7KY    odd when FLjAMP has the file name and still asks 4 0   what u think?    u can see by my typing I’ve had a tough day too   even w/o
visiting my dentist  btu < K7KYg:detn

K7KY de KE6SLS Okay, I have now gone back to qrp,  ur vry loud hemrsFu tn

I think I should have caught that preamble.   The line in: CALL/INFO wasn’t filled in.
I should have manually requested zero on it, but I just now figurewlAcnBt out.  FLA needs some more serious hacker attention and serious attention to
detail.   Tonight’s condx w/lightning really ferrit that situation out!.

I am kind of scratching my head at Brad’s FLA – must have been a prior exÄupB or something.  but the rest wereuet½ty close.

Lastly.  Working with talanted ops REALLY has taken my mind off the pain inflicted to
my person today!  Grateful for that.  We also had a spectacular sunset again!

Tnx for hanging in th  sotrN there with me Doug.  That’s all I needed  and grateful to provide John’s Fill
agn tonight.

o{hnMaJaye   I dialed it back a bit   ur 90% @ QRP     it’s odd that FLAMP printed the file name, but not the other data, when it clearly missed 0.  I think
Dave is doing a lot more work these days on FLRIG    threre are so many new rigs and updated rigs it seem like the forum is usually all about fLRIG
updates and fixes. he may have worked himself into acorner so to speak.    my typing is terrible tonite  anyway, I always enjoy working w/you    anything
