Band condx are improving; Fall is on the horizon. We’ve not logged many stations East of Utah this Summer. Hopefully, they’ll again be able to work the net this Fall. In favorable band condx, Eastern stations ck-in regularly.

We made a couple omission errors tonight. We began the NBEMS Exercise before sending the Roster. During the Exercise, we forgot to send the 3rd pass in MFSK-32 that supports Monitoring stations. Eight (40%) of tonight’s 22 ck-ins are Active. Two (25%) of 8 NBEMS Exercise participants knew that Macro Tags like <@TXRSID:t> are executed after transmission ends. Answer B. These Tags only execute after <RX>. NBEMS Exercise questions are primarily for simulating message content, but they’re occasionally relevant or designed to stimulate learning.

Western Digital Net has it’s founding NCS back. Steve K6ETA’s work schedule has changed and he’s again running WDN. Steve is looking for a couple Ops to work with him on a regular basis. A few ORCA Ops kept WDN alive while Steve was unable to run the net. Now, he needs a couple Ops to alternate w/him regularly. WDN is not a difficult net to run. NCS experience is invaluable. You’ll be a more capable and flexible digital Op for the effort.

Next session, 06/Sep/22 will have a Basic NBEMS Exercise conducted by Don KJ7VGV, one of our alternate NCS. We’ll be using version 2 of our Path Evaluation Macro in the Comment Round. Send the Test image with the Path Macro before or after your comments. For comments, please describe the function of a Macro you’ve created and include the content of your Macro. Include the content of your macro with your comments. We’re interested in what your Macro is designed to do and how it’s configured. Don’t execute the Macro; just send it’s content.

Don’t email Test images from this Comment Round, but send the opening/closing NCS images as usual. We’ll publish the Comment Round images that we receive in one section and opening/closing Test images that you received in another. Regular review of image reception combined with Comment Round Reception Reports help us understand band condx and improve our stations.

Jaye KE6SLS plans to request a new FLDIGI function from Dave W1HKJ, FLDIGI’s Developer. Jaye hopes he will add MFSK to ALERT. ALERT currently supports CW, RTTY, & PSK modes. It would be very useful to have ALERT send an audio sound when our CALLSIGN is received. It would really benefit Ops working our Advanced NBEMS Exercises. Once they CONFIRM the Exercise file, they’re busy implementing Exercise instructions and can miss NCS calling them. An audio ALERT would be helpful here and for other net events. We hope it’s easy for Dave to implement; Dave is a very busy guy.

Thanks for following ORCA Protocols. It’s the primary reason our nets check-in and operate efficiently. We accomplish a lot in an hour. Thanks for your participation and support.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight we have an Advanced NBEMS Exercise w/Traffic Round. Next session, the 1st Tuesday in September, will have a Basic NBEMS Exercise and Macro experiment.

While we continue with our policy of not critiquing Exercise results, we thought you might be interested in a couple observations. We always review Exercise results. Here’s two useful observations. Incoming Ops learn the NBEMS Exercises as Monitors, checking their work in the after-net Monitor’s Session. They’re well prepared when they begin working live. Now, nearly everyone works the various traffic-handling tasks easily. Previously, incoming Ops participated in the Exercises w/o practicing silently as they do now. Mistakes were inevitable.

Most Advanced NBEMS Exercise errors aren’t Protocol errors, but Parsing errors. Exercise details change from session to session. Parse carefully to catch these variations. File names are important to routing traffic correctly. Our file convention enables us to store and retrieve files quickly. Labeled according to convention, we can find specific files easily. ‘URCALL’ isn’t part of the file name. It’s simply a ‘placeholder’ to be replaced by your CALLSIGN. Take time to Parse instructions carefully and review your Exercise results.

There’s only a couple minutes between an Advance Exercise and Traffic Round. There’s not much time for those at the top of the Roster to complete the Exercise. NCS may also ask you to Relay at this time. While you work, keep a bit of attention on net operation s. Your train-of-thought may also be interrupted on an emergency net. We practice for eventualities.

If you’ve not completed the Exercise when NCS calls for your traffic, send ‘Pse come back’, and we’ll circle back for you. After the 1st pass, we often look for Relays to send the 2nd pass. NCS may need your help, even though you’re busy. If you don’t finish before being called for traffic, we’ll come back for you.

Next Session, 06/Sep/22 we’ll use the new Path Evaluation Macro in the Comment Round. Version 2 is available for download in the right column of our website: http://orcadigitalnet.com.

Active Ops will transmit our Test image with the Path Evaluation Macro v2. In your Comments, please explain the function of a Macro you’ve created and include the actual Macro text. Remember what we’ve learned about including Macro Tags in FLDIGI transmissions.

You won’t email any images received in the 06/Sep/22 Comment Round. Please email the beginning/ending NCS Test images as usual. We’ll publish two Test image columns in the Net Report. One depicting net-member reception of NCS, the other depicting NCS reception of net-members. Monitoring stations can use their Path Evaluation Macro in the after-net Monitor’s Session.

Good copy on NCS and most other stations
My computer developed several problems last week and as it was several years old, I decided to upgrade it rather than repair it
I replaced the motherboard, CPU, and memory
I am now running Windows 11 and still figuring out some of the “quirks”
I had 4 blocks on the first mode but couldn’t report
I had to reboot and lost them
Thankfully this computer reboots much faster than it did
Thanks for the net

Good band conditions tonight I could see everyone but one op and that was Lacy WA but got both of Vancouver WA.

I sent this link a couple weeks ago on WesternDigitalNet and Lamar reported that he got his free N95 masks. So I thought I would share the same link with ORCA ops:

No sun here today.  No smoke either, another silver lining.  Last report on the SRLC fire is containment dropped last night/today

Spent many hours today filing my first formal complaint against the predatory internet company with the BBB.  I plan to follow up with the FCC and CPUC.  This has been going on since April   Don’t know if legal action is available.  Also plan to document and forward to my supervisors and request they suspend the operating license and look for trustworthy company to step in.

My neighbor Ann is back home and doing much better.  She has a helper staying with her for now and I hope the county will make sure she gets some good in-home assistance.

I have the instructions on my pi computer for next week.  I’ll be doing in house testing to make sure all works well.  Nice work putting the image & the instructions on the front ORCA website.

PSKR500 Still doesn’t do well in multipath condx

Our exercise confirms again the critical need for ALARM in FLDigi for alerting operators they have been called.

Have the fixin’s for a shrimp stir-fry.  Late supper but good supper!

Oh yeah, congrats to NCS’s for their upgrade to Mint 21!  I hope you find it a pleasant experience.  I’m still on Mint 20.3 here.

Stay well and hope to see you down the wf soon!

Seems that I heard most of the people on the early ck-in tonight. Weather was warm today at 99F, the rest of the week will be about the same. Air Quality Index has been around 30-35 for the last week which is good.  I hope everyone will have a good week and I look forward to seeing you all next week, same bat time, same bat channel.  I am only using 15% power tonight.

We’ve had a lot of smoke from the Rum Creek Fire. Today was foggy all day, so the smoke didn’t seem noticable. Looks like we’re going to have an early winter. Haven’t had much hot wx this summer, mostly cooler coastal wx.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Very nice RX Report Mindy   tu  BK I hv a couple thoughts too..

NCS Comments…

Exercise Files: This afternoon we learned that single-spaced files written in Notepad++ open w/o blank lines in Notepad making them difficult to read. If you have this problem with Exercise files, we’d like to know. It seems Notepad strips out some linefeeds. We’re adding extra line feeds to have these files open correctly in Notepad. We don’t know if this is also a problem in Linux & Mac.

Macro Tags with <@   are executed after    answer B

Note that Jaye KE6SLS sent his Report in 128byte blocks.   He needed only 4blocks. He’s close to NCS. Other stations may have needed to stick w/64bytes/bk due to condx.

TU Doug.   I REALLY appreciate the reports on signals here too.  I hope more ops might take up that effort as it really helps us all eval and upgrade our systems.   Also, if you know how I can file a bug report or feature request for FLDigi, I’d like to learn. I did some searching and didn’t really find a solid clue.    I really want to see the ALARM feature added to fldigi as net ops could really benifit from that.

Tnx you guys, 73

ke6sls k

RR Jaye    ur right on w/signal reports      one or two reports are just the stuff to get exicited about or depressed, but ongoing reports are really useful   to help us refine and understand our equipment and learn more about propagation.     As to the bug rpt you can send it your self to the FLDIGI forums  in ur case, use the Linux FLDIGI forum    I can send the URL   BK  anyone else? < K7KY
