Including OFDM modes in NBEMS Exercises is always interesting. Tonight is our first use of OFDM-750R. We usually use OFDM-500R. 750R is 50% faster than 500R. Carroll W7WXV in Prineville,OR CONFIRMED it immediately and Lamar AE6LJ missed only Block#4. Lamar often CONFIRMS OFDM-500R in the 1st pass. While OFDM is very fast, it’s also very fragile on noisy HF bands. Note that while 2 stations did well, some didn’t copy any of it. It’s very condx sensitive.

We thought tonight’s Exercise multiple-choice question might be too easy. We mentioned the <GOHOME> Tag last week and anticipated that some would have checked it out. Two Ops Aced all Exercise tasks. Lamar AE6LJ knew <GOHOME> sets the cursor to the ‘Sweet Spot’; Ever resourceful, Tom WB7EUX did a lightning User Manual Look-Up on-the-fly. Your Sweet Spot is set here: Configure/Misc/Sweet Spot.

In the Comment Round and after-net email, Jaye KE6SLS reminded us that we can often improve reception by reducing RF Gain when band condx are difficult. Richard KK6RJR in Bakersfield,CA checked in w/o a Relay for the 1st time in a couple months. He shared file-overhead information from last week’s NBEMS Exercise with local colleagues revising WinLink Forms. It’s always good to hear when our work benefits others. In emergencies, it may be helpful to limit file size and increase traffic speed. There will be times for verbose and times for brief & concise.

NBEMS Exercise results have always been self-correcting and they remain so. If you would like our input, email: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com. NBEMS Exercises are all about traffic-handling routines and tactics. The question is usually there to simulate content. While NBEMS Exercises are similar, they’re not exactly the same. We make subtle changes for Parsing practice. Implementing instructions correctly depends on parsing them correctly. Writing instruction is also challenging. We’re working on our end.

Next session, 31/Aug/22 will have the last Advanced NBEMS Exercise for August. The following week will be the 1st Tuesday in September with a Basic NBEMS Exercise and Macro experiment in the Comment Round. You’ll have the opportunity to share one of your Macros with the net. Remember, when transmitting text that contains Macro Tags, we can’t call those files by Macro. Our ‘Comment Macro’ uses the <FILE> Tag. Whenever we engage the Macro Parser, we cannot include Macro Tags in file content. The Parser will either execute the Tag, or choke. Without the Macro Parser, FLDIGI, FLMSG, & FLAMP will send text containing Macro Tags w/o issue.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight we have an Advanced NBEMS Exercise w/Traffic Round. August has 5 Tuesdays; we’ll have another Advanced Exercise next Tuesday, 30/Aug/22. The 1st Tuesday in September will have a Basic NBEMS Exercise and Macro experiment.

Thanks for the feedback on critiquing Advanced NBEMS Exercise results. Nearly everyone would like to know Exercise objectives and prefer continuing with self-evaluation/correction. The Advanced Exercise that requires using a PC Editor instead of FLMSG is also about Browsers, Spreadsheets, Databases, etc. The Exercise gives practice using another software application while handling traffic in the FLDIGI NBEMS suite. You may need to copy from a Browser or Database to add information to a message.

Exercise performance continues to be self-correcting unless you ask otherwise. We’re happy to review Exercises with you during Comments, after-net, email, or telephone. The number at the end of each Exercise is the number of discreet tasks. This helps review the instructions step by step.

We’ll continue experimenting with the Path Evaluation Macro in Comments every 1st Tuesday.  The Path Evaluation Macro Version 2 is available for download in the right column of our website: http://orcadigitalnet.com. We’ve added two background Tags. We’ll use v2 for our next Macro experiment on 05/Sep/22. In that session, Active Ops will transmit the Test image with the Path Evaluation Macro in the Comment Round. You won’t email any Comment Round images this session, but will email the beginning/ending NCS Test images as usual. We’ll publish two columns in the Net Report. One depicting net-member reception of NCS, the other depicting NCS reception of net-members. Monitoring stations can use the Path Evaluation Macro in the after-net Monitor’s Session.

We’ve added <GOHOME> & <LOCK:on> to the Path Evaluation Macro. <GOHOME> is a particularly useful Tag with wide application. The combination of <GOHOME> and <LOCK:on> set and lock your cursor @ 1500wf. We use it in numerous Macros for automatic freq-check & Lock. With <LOCK:on>, it doesn’t matter where you’re copying the other station, your transmission is Locked @ 1500wf.

Thanks to your focus and attention to detail, ORCA net-operations are usually brisk and smooth. We seldom have ck-in pile-ups. Some doubles are unavoidable when you can’t hear every station. When you can’t copy NCS, wait for the ck-in Relay. If you don’t hear a Relay, you’re unable to log in. That’s Radio. Sending into the void is likely to double NCS and other net stations.

Nice exercise + mode selection Doug. That was an ORCA 1st to have a multiple choice question… tricky choices too! The band is much better tonight than it’s been in a long time. OFDM is a peculiar mode… interesting to see how well/poor its RXed and where. PSK-63RC4 did well tonight.

ORCA < WA7HHE, GE to the net, attended a AAR for our Airport Disaster Recertification Drill. Consensus was they will not have another drill without the Ham radio operators. Big thanks to Doug and Mindy for all the training they have provided. Only problem is the County EOC and Hospital want us to work with them for “additional” exercises.
Following is a link to the exercise, big thanks to ORCA operators KG7VVN sending digital HICS 214 5 minute updates to the hospital EOC, KR7KR calling in Triage at the disaster scene and W6DLW at the hospital for NCS.

No sun here today.  No smoke either, so there’s the silver lining.

Had a lot of fun on 20m yesterday before all the nets.  Spanned from 10m and landed on 20m.  Worked a CW station, then switched to psk31 and had a wonderful chat with the east coast, then switched up to SSTV and actually made a QSO

Today, I again met and chatted with Bruce on 20m at 14.110MHz, 984 WF. He’s busier than a twin tailed beaver!  Reported lots of rain, great, and heat!

Multipath: Next week, I am going to try to turn down my RF gain even more to see if I can get better cpy on eval image.  Later, I may test my LOG (Loop On Ground) antenna and see how it deals with multipathing.

Tonight’s answer was a guess since I haven’t researched all the macro stuff yet.  Will look forward to next basic with eval macro test.

The perpetual struggle goes on . . .

Stay well and hope to see you down the wf soon!

The band seemed to be pretty good tonight, I could copy most of the ck-ins except to the SE of my location.  I had good reception of the OFDM mode, I do have to set my Fldigi squelch properly to copy well. Thank you for an easy advanced exercise tonight, ha ha. I copied all active stations with Flamp messages except for WA7HEE because I was not able to switch modes quickly enough.  As for weather, C.OR should be in the mid 80’s to 90 degrees for the rest of the week.  No smoke issues from wildfires so far.  Garden is growing well!

Advanced NBEMS Exercise:  C) <GOHOME> Tag sets FLDIGI cursor to your ‘Sweet Spot’.

Carroll W7WXV CONFIRMED OFDK-750 in one pass in his first Advanced NBEMS Exercise. Nice work, Carroll!

We can send text containing Macro Tags in FLDIGI, FLMSG, & FLAMP w/o having them execute. We can’t call a file containing Macro Tags with a Macro. When the Macro Parser is active, it executes all Tags. I normally send Comments by Macro, but I had to copy/paste this text into the TX buffer. If I called it with the Comment Macro, the <GOHOME> Tag would execute.  Or, it would otherwise confuse the Macro Parser and terminate the transmission.

It’s an honor to be affiliated with Rainbows Canyon ARC. They’re an inspiring ARC.

< Doug K7KY

Good to know about the macro parser. We learn a lot here

Shortwave Radiogram continues VOA Radiogram's tradition testing new modes and is an interesting source for Digital Ops wishing to practice more with FLDIGI & FLAMP.
