ORCA consumed most of Tuesday. Doug spent the entire day working on ORCA stuff. We had 3 main issues: Instruction accuracy, Macro experiments, and questions regarding FLMSG & default PC Editors. We did a lot of two station testing too. The net revealed we we’re still off course in a couple places. It seems, the more we learn, the more we need to learn. Thanks for your patience as we continue learning the FLDIGI NBEMS suite.
The Advanced Exercise that requires using a PC Editor instead of FLMSG is actually about Browsers, Spreadsheets, Databases, etc, not just Text Editors. The Exercise gives practice using another software application while handling traffic in the FLDIGI NBEMS suite. You may need to copy from a Browser or Database to add information to a message. We didn’t realize the FLMSG Plain Text output from the File/View/ menu contains no additional overhead. It’s similar to an ordinary Text Editor. The FLMSG Plain Text Form is not the same; it contains additional control characters that generate the Form. Going forward, Advanced NBEMS Exercises will use FLMSG and a PC Text Editor. The PC Text Editor simulates numerous PC software applications. We specify a PC Text Editor because all Operating Systems have one.
Here’s some Advanced Exercise data. Note the difference in Blocks used and Block Size:
WB7EUX 1 64
AE6LJ 1 64
KE6SLS 2 64 Binary
KJ7VGV 4 64 Mac
N2RSN 1 64
W7EAZ 1 64
N7SDC 0 64 incomplete copy of Announcements
KM7H 1 96
5 of 8 Ops needed only 1 Block of 64bytes to complete the Exercise. One station didn’t copy Announcements well and missed the target sentence. Different results imply different process.
Currently, we both conduct the net with Panasonic Toughbook CF-C2/Win8.1. We’ve had no problem developing Macros that work correctly on Win & Linux platforms. Mac is another story. Most Macros work as expected on Mac, but not all. Individual system configuration may account for some errors. We’ve done some troubleshooting with Don KJ7VGV and Bruno KG7VVN who both use Macs. Going forward, we’ll do our best to ascertain our Macro work on all platforms. Those using Macs can network to solve specific Mac issues.
Macro development is also challenging. We’ll continue experimenting with the Path Evaluation Macro in Comments every 1st Tuesday. Version 2 of the Path Evaluation Macro is available for download in the right column of our website. We’ve added two background Tags. We’ll use v2 for our next Macro experiment on 05/Sep/22. In that session, all Active Ops will use the Path Evaluation Macro during Comments. You won’t email other ORCA Ops’ images this session, but email the beginning/ending NCS Test images as usual. We’ll publish two columns in the Net Report, one depicting net-member reception of NCS, and one depicting NCS reception of net-stations. Monitoring stations can use the Path Evaluation Macro in the after-net Monitor’s Session.
We’ve added <GOHOME> & <LOCK:on> to the Path Evaluation Macro. <GOHOME> is a particularly useful Tag with wide application. The combination of <GOHOME> and <LOCK:on> set and Lock your cursor @ 1500wf. We use it in numerous Macros for automatic freq-check & Lock. With <LOCK:on>, it doesn’t matter where you’re copying the other station, your transmission will be @ 1500wf. You can experiment with these Tags b4 we use them on 05/Sep/22.
We hope you find publishing the Net Log useful. We edit noise out of the log to make it readable. Few would wade through all the noise for content. We often run with Squelch off to catch weak signals. This packs the log with noise. We routinely refer to net logs to review events and resolve questions.
Welcome back Bob N7RPB in Medford,OR and Kyle N7OOS in Boise,ID. Band condx finally enabled Tom WB7EUX to work the net tonight from Joseph,OR. Poor propagation has restricted him to monitoring lately. Six stations took advantage of the after-net Monitor’s Session. When band condx improve with nightfall, we’re often able to CONFIRM stations that didn’t copy well earlier in the net.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Tonight we have an Advanced NBEMS Exercise w/Traffic Round.
Heads-Up for tonight’s Advanced NBEMS Exercise. FLMSG files include control characters that create the Forms. These hidden characters increase file size. A brief sentence in a Blank Form is 142bytes, the same sentence output as Plain Text is 68bytes. The same sentence in Win/Notepad is also 68bytes. We enable messages to transfer faster by reducing unnecessary file overhead. To create a FLMSG file w/o Form overhead, use ‘File/View/Plain Text’. This opens your default PC Editor, suggesting file name, ‘blankform.txt’, & Saving in: …/NBEMS.files/ICS/.
If you want to store Plain Text files w/all other FLMSG files, add the ‘message’ directory/folder, ie: …/NBEMS.files/ICS/messages/. All FLMSG Form files default to: …/NBEMS.files/ICS/messages/. It’s more intuitive to store them all in one directory/folder.
Thanks for the feedback on critiquing Advanced NBEMS Exercise results. Nearly everyone would like to know Exercise objectives and prefer continuing with self-evaluation/correction. We agree; we don’t have time to add a task to the net. Fall and Winter will bring larger Rosters and we want to keep net sessions close to an hour. We’re always interested in resolving Exercise and operational questions after net or by email & phone.
We’ll continue experimenting with the Path Evaluation Macro in Comments every 1st Tuesday. The Path Evaluation Macro Version 2 is available for download in the right column of our website. We’ve added two background Tags. We’ll use v2 for our next Macro experiment on 05/Sep/22. In that session, all Active Ops will use the Path Evaluation Macro during Comments. You won’t send any Comment Round images this session, but will send the beginning/ending Test images as usual. We’ll publish two columns in the Net Report. One depicting net-member reception of NCS, and one depicting NCS reception of net-members. Monitoring stations can use the Path Evaluation Macro in the after-net Monitor’s Session.
We’ve added <GOHOME> & <LOCK:on> to the Path Evaluation Macro. <GOHOME> is a particularly useful Tag with wide application .

Good news tonight. My friend and his family up in Willow Creak were able to return to their home after two weeks of being evac’d. Great to know they are home.
The Six Rivers lightning complex Fire is over 21000 acres and now about 19% contained. As of last report, ZERO structures lost!
Wasn’t able to make contact with Bruce kb7vx today, but I did see he called me about 2100z. The NCS on 20m was at 14.110 at 984 WF! I don’t know why. Really shows how much more dialed in we are here on the ORCA & WDN nets.
I think the band will be good tonight. Was able to check into the Sonoma/Mendocino net and heard all stations well, including the Utah station with difficulty.
Received an Email from Steve k6eta. He’ll work on setting up a calendar for WDN NCS’s.
The last few weeks, the weather has been absolutely perfect. Our temps have peeked at between 66-70 degrees. Many days start and end with marine layer broken by beautiful blue skies. Each morning I check in with a group of hams east of me and today they were all talking about being over 110 degrees! I am in the PERFECT area
PSK-250 does not do well in fading nor multipath situations, yet I was able to copy all but the preamble.
Did you notice my traffic tonight? NCS had sent the Roster in FLM and my FLM decided to “get weird” and gave me the “IGNORE ERRORS” prompt, which I clicked, but instead of presenting me with an FLM, FLD decided to open my browswer! In doing so, my old computer started to gable some of FLD text as my browser opened!
This morning, just after I finished feeding my cats, I heard a loud knock on my door. I found 4 deputies outside! They were looking for someone whose name I forget. I told them I don’t know him, and the kid said it’s a “her” so I reported I didn’t know her and that I have been here for 17 years and know all my neighbors, but never heard of that person. I don’t know if someone was pranking or else someone gave false location. But my god, I am getting old, all I could see is four kids in uniform
Great to see you all on the WF. Stay well and hope to see you down the wf soon!

Great Reception Report, Mindy tu BK Tonight’s Exercise used FLMSG to generate a file. it entailed using fLMSG
