80m was really noisy tonight, but our digital modes managed it easily. We had a couple glitches with the Macro experiment, mostly due to instruction clarity, it seems.

Bruno KG7VVN conducted tonight’s Basic NBEMS Experiment. He did an excellent job. It has us thinking about the wisdom of reducing Basic NBEMS Exercises to once-a-month. We were getting the impression that ORCA veterans missed the Advanced Exercises and we have a lot more veterans than Newbies. Now we have two Ops qualified and willing to run Basic Exercises with only one opportunity per month. We’re thinking to return to running Basic Exercises on the 1st & 2nd Tuesday every month. ARCs tend to meet in the 1st or 2nd week. Having two Basic Exercises every month would enable Bruno and Don KJ7VGV to practice their new skills more often and increase our opportunities to work with Macros. Regular practice is as important as the initial training. We’re interested in your thoughts about returning to 2 Basic NBEMS Exercises per month.

We also need to examine NBEMS Exercises results more closely. Traditionally, we do very little review of how members work the Exercises. They’re structured for self-correction. We assume members review the log to evaluate their performance. Recently, Don noticed that some Ops are using FLMSG in Exercises that specify a PC Editor instead of FLMSG. Your PC Editor might be NotePad in Windows OS, Nano in Linux OS, and something else in Mac OS. These Exercises give experience and practice using a PC Editor to create traffic instead of FLMSG. They build Operator knowledge and flexibility.

There’s no point in practicing incorrectly. We’d like to begin addressing Exercise errors in a constructive manner. We never want to embarrass anyone. We’re in this together and we work as a team. We’d like your thoughts on improving Exercise performance in a constructive manner.  We alter Exercise instructions in various ways to encourage careful parsing. Sometimes, our instructions lack clarity. We can’t expect the net to correctly implement faulty instructions. We’re working on our end.

Tonight’s Macro experiment instructions lacked clarity in one area and Lamar AE6LJ found it directly. Vague instructions impelled Lamar to add <MODEM:MFSK32> to the Macro, a Tag it wouldn’t need. We understand why he added the Tag. We didn’t explain that on rare evenings ORCA may not be using MFSK-32. It could be MFSK-22 if MFSK-32 isn’t sufficient. The Macro is designed to store(<PUSH:m>) and restore(<@POP>) the current net mode, whatever it is.

Mindy feels the term, ‘Reading Comprehension’ has negative implications. Doug sees it as neutral scientific term. We’re interested in your thoughts. How does it seem to you? We’d like to know. Understanding written instructions is fundamental to implementing them. We want to address this constructively. We try to write instructions clearly and concisely; we’re learning as we go too. While the Exercise are basically similar, they change slightly from session to session. It takes careful parsing to catch these changes. We do need to focus on parsing instructions correctly.

We most often address protocol errors because they effect net operations. We’ve not directly addressed Exercise errors; we’ve left them to the individual Op to self-correct. It’s not good form to practice incorrectly, embedding wrong routines in memory. We’d like to know your thoughts on NBEMS Exercise corrections: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com  We don’t want to waste valuable time practicing incorrectly.

Tonight we have a Basic NBEMS Exercise conducted by Bruno KG7VVN. Basic NBEMS Exercises have no Traffic Round.

We held a NBEMS Exercise practice session last night. Thanks to the ORCA Ops that have helped us make these practice sessions realistic for those learning to conduct our weekly NBEMS Exercises. Don KJ7VGV and Bruno KG7VVN have both learned to conduct NBEMS Exercises. Hats-Off to them and the pick-up crew that helped make practice more realistic, Jaye KE6SLS & Lamar AE6LJ.

Learning NCS routines is worthwhile, even if you don’t aspire to NCS duties. Having  some NCS skills enables you to stand-up a net when needed and establish a Roster. You can hand it off to a more experienced Ops when they’re available. Digital operations can be complex. The more you know, the better job you’ll do with much less stress.

Speaking of NBMES Exercises, have you noticed that during Advanced NBEMS Exercises some Ops submit Exercise files that cannot be read in FLDIGI’s RX window. Their text isn’t ASCII, it’s Binary. And, some need 6 or 7 blocks when others need only 3 blocks. Don KJ7VGV has discovered the reason. Some Ops are using FLMSG in the PC Editor Exercise. We don’t usually critique Exercise performance. You’re usually on you own for checking your work..

Some Advanced Exercises have you create a file in your PC Text Editor and send it to NCS in FLAMP. Plain text files from PC Editors sent in FLAMP print in plain text, not binary. There’s no need for FLMSG (an Editor) when we create files in a PC Editor. Those plain text files should go directly to FLAMP and print in plain text.

Note that the title of an Advanced NBEMS Exercise and the Exercise Instructions don’t mention FLMSG. FLMSG is not used in Exercises with the PC Editor. Reading Comprehension is a major component of nearly every thing we do at ORCA DIGITAL NET.  We won’t correctly implement instructions we don’t fully understand. While NBEMS Exercises are fundamentally similar, they have small and sometimes subtle differences that are easily overlooked. Exercises are similar, but not always exactly the same. Now is the time to establish solid reading habits; the routines we practice today will be the routines we fall back on when prompt accuracy is essential.

During the Comment Round, we’ll experiment with our Path Evaluation and Comment Macros. Instructions for this experiment were given in last week’s Announcements and Net Report. Here they are again: You’ll revise the Path Evaluation Macro to automatically switch to MFSK-64 and return to MFSK-32 when transmission ends. Send the Path Macro 1st.  We’re not Daisy-Chaining tonight; the Macros should start/stop on their own when you initiate them manually. The following Tags will switch the Path Macro from MFSK-32 to MFSK-64 b4 transmission begins and reset MFSK-32 when transmission ends: PUSH:m>. MODEM:MFSK64>, @POP>.  Remember to bracket Tags with Left < & Right > arrows.

Tonight, please skip the beginning/ending Test images and send only the two best images you decode during the Comment Round. This comparison reveals member station signal strength and information about the path between member stations. We only publish the Comment Round images once a month. All other sessions use beginning/ending Test images to reveal path between member stations and NCS.

Good News at Western Digital Net.  WDN’s developer and NCS, Steve K6ETA, is now able to run a couple sessions monthly. He still needs a few volunteer NCS for the other sessions. Please contact Steve directly if you can help with NCS duties until Steve’s work schedule resolves. Volunteer NCS have keep WDN alive for 2+ months. We still need to fill a couple Thursdays each month. Sustaining WDN is well worth our time and energy.

I wound up using the inline (!) version of POP instead of the delayed (@) POP. The instructions seemed to indicate we were to modify only the Path Image macro to manipulate the back-and-forth and I wanted to ensure the entire net, not just me, was returned to MFSK32 before I TX’d Comments. (No matter where I placed @POP, it was only occurring for me outside of the TXID.) To make sure I POPped back to MFSK32 and not just whatever may have been in use before my turn tonight. I added MODEM:MFSK32 at the very beginning of the Path Image Macro string. When I thought I had it all done right I tested it first using the TX generate and Playback utilities in FLDigi, then on low power over a 2M simplex frequency. Fingers still crossed.

BTW… In 2M, fm, OTA testing I noticed there was no difference in the image TX time between MFSK32 or 64. There was a marked difference in image quality, however, with 32 being much the better. Curious as to why that would be. Anyone?

ORCA NCS< Doug/Mindy, Received a substantial rain shower this afternnon, received0.34 inchs in about 30 minutes. Then it was gone. Participated in a pre-event run for the Cedar City Airport 3 year certification (aircarft crash) exercise coming the 16th. Our Club ECOMM Group will keep the Hospital EOC apprised of incoming Triage numbers. Three Rotor wing, one Fixed wing, ground anmbulances ans a bus will transport casualties to area hospitals there will be 30 casualties in all. Thanks to Bruno (KG7VVN) for doing the exercise. Not much else to share tonight. Nice to see everyone on the waterfall. 73 to all.

Hard to get a good S-reading w/all the static crashes during ck-in. Helpful to have all the relays, great practice too. Band seems more stable now.
