Will we ever exit Solar Minimum? Band condx are still difficult. We’ve not logged anyone East of Utah for months now. We’re not anxious for Winter, but we’d appreciate band condx associated with long winter nights. Relays are essential in these condx. Bruno KG7VVN in Beryl,UT Relayed Richard KK6RJR in Bakersfield,CA and Steve W7WSV in Mesa,AZ tonight. We couldn’t copy either of them.

Tonight’s Advanced NBEMS Exercise included OFDM-500. The last time we began the Exercise in OFDM-500, one station CONFIRMED it directly. Lamar AE6LJ had a difficult time with the mode. His cursor was all over the waterfall. Tonight, Lamar CONFIRMED OFDM-500 immediately, the only station to CONFIRM OFDM-500. Go figure. OFDM is very fast, but not nearly as robust as MFSK & THOR, our most dependable modes with reasonable speed. We seldom need modes like OLIVIA, but we’ll certainly use them when necessary.

The Roster ticked up to 23 stations tonight, 7 of them participating in the Advanced NBEMS Exercise. All our Exercises are self-evaluating and self-correcting. One aspect of our weekly Exercises seems to fly under the radar. We seldom address individual Exercise performance with the exception of Protocol errors. Each Exercise has a number at the end that reflects the number of discreet tasks in the Exercise. Reading Comprehension is a key skill we practice in these Exercises. Parsing instructions correctly is essential to implementing them correctly.

Most Advanced NBEMS Exercise errors are Reading Comprehension errors. The Exercises all have numerous elements in common. They differ in small details to encourage careful parsing. Another aspect of this issue is instruction clarity. Writing instructions clearly is equally challenging to parsing them correctly. We do our best to write them clearly. We’re also learning as we go.

Next session is the 1st Tuesday of August and we’ll have a Basic NBEMS Exercise. Bruno KG7VVN will conduct the Exercise. Bruno and Don KJ7VGV have both learned this NCS routine and will conduct the monthly Basic Exercises as long as they like. We’ve been working toward enabling members to conduct net operations for years. Hats-Off to these two for committing their time and energy to learning NCS tasks. They helped us refine the instructions and Macros, making learning easier for those who follow.

Next week we’ll be experimenting with Macros in the Comment Round. Here’s the instructions from tonight’s Announcements:

…. we’ll revise the Path Evaluation Macro to automatically switch to MFSK-64 and return to MFSK-32 when transmission ends. Send the Path Macro 1st. We’re not Daisy-Chaining tonight; the Macros should start/stop on their own. The following Tags will switch the Path Macro from MFSK-32 to MFSK-64 b4 transmission begins and reset MFSK-32 when transmission ends: <PUSH:m>. <MODEM:MFSK64>, <@POP>. Experiment off-air with their placement in the Macro. For some Tags, their position in the Macro is important, for other it’s not. The Macro Parser reads the whole Macro to determine execution order.

Excessive Hea coesngs or Heat Advisories are now in effect for the forecast area through Saturday. Daytime RH`s will be low and nighttime recoveries poor to moderate. Light winds are expected through Thursday though, helping to mitigate red flag concerns. There is a very slight chance of a dry thunderstorm for southwestern Deschutes County in the Cascades on Wednesday, but this risk remains very low. Increasing breezy winds along the Cascade Gaps are
expected over the weekend.

Tonight we have an Advanced NBEMS Exercise and Traffic Round. Our Traffic Round is part of the Advanced Exercise. We don’t seek formal Traffic. Emergencies excepted.

Next session, the 1st Tuesday in August, will have a Basic NBEMS Exercise. We’ll also experiment with Macros in the Comment round. For that experiment, we’ll revise the Path Evaluation Macro to automatically switch to MFSK-64 and return to MFSK-32 when transmission ends. Send the Path Macro 1st. Jaye KE6SLS’s Humboldt Digital Emergency Net has a good example of where this combination of Tags is helpful. Jaye always switches from MFSK-32 to MFSK-64 for the Bulletin and back to MFSK-32 for net business. These three Tags automate those changes.

ORCA < WA7HHHE, attempting to use Text editor into FLAMP does not work for me lost my assignment and , so found my comments as follows: ORCA < WA7HHE, overcast this evening with some lightening crashes coming from upon the mountain. Have some great support from our local ECOMM group as we prepare for a local Airport Certification Disaster drill. Two aircraft will collide with a total of 30 causalities. Evacuation of the injured will utilize three rotor wing, one fixed wing and one ground ambulance. Our ECOMM group will be present at the crash site and will call in Triage colours (ORCA’s KR7KR) to two NCS stations located at the Airport EOC from there will hand off to a digital operator (ORCA’s KG7VVN) who will shoot the triage info over to the hospital EOC (ORCA’s W6DLW) with using 8PSK1000F. Have a short distance and pretesting indicates it will work very well. (7 seconds for a HICS 214 page) Want to let our ORCA NCS dual know very much appreciate their training.

I will exercise the COMMENT macro again tonight. I really like this macro as it makes it a bit easier to keep up with net and comments. The trick is to SAVE b4 sending :)

We all need to work on our TxID while engaged with ORCA. NCS asks us to NOT use TxiD while on the net.

Good to be back to ORCA net. Last week was a whirlwind and I didn’t even have a change to turn on FLDigi to monitor.

Today, I actually got my stuff done and fired up FLDigi on 20m to try and work Bruce kb7vx. I never did hear him, but did copy the traffic out of Idaho after a few fills. Will give it another try next Tuesday.

Lots of fires in and near Humboldt county. The fire crews are on them like fire ants which has kept the fires small and short.

On my home front, I pulled out the sprinkler and water about every 5 days for an hour. I would do more, but water is crazy expensive here now-a-days.

There has been so much activity in my life the last few weeks, I feel like I need a vacation Hoping the rest of my week is VERY uneventful!

Looks like the band is pretty good tonight. Bracing for the more normal “summer time condx!”

So far, band condx have been quite stable and quiet! Wonderful :)

I did enjoy lots of wonderful sunshine this PM puttering on my patio and cleaning up after some work was done here. I really enjoy this time of year here on the coast. It got up to 65 degrees here, and for us on the coast, this is baking temperatures! So glad I am not inland where they are dealing with triple digit temps!

For Advanced NBMES Exercises that require more work than Basic Exercises, we try to slow down a bit btwn the Exercise and Comments to give Ops a little more time to complete the Exercise. Another tactic is checking in later to be lower in the Roster.

Remember to disable TxID during nets.

Brad WA7HHE I can probably help you with the Text Editor/FLDIGI issue. It’s very satisfying to see what the Ops in Rainbows Canyon ARC are doing in their community. They’ve already done a lot for ORCA DIGITAL NET. We really appreciate their participation and support.

I too love the Comment Macro. I use it for all nets and QSOs too. It’s easy to add thoughts during the net. SAVING is critical! < Doug K7KY

Yes, I noticed during the Exercise that some Ops sent compressed unreadable and others in plain text. I didn’t have time to figure out what caused the difference but I’ll look into it now when u hv time u can look into it too. It’s not too important, but it would be good to know what causes the differernc l u got the question correct. I don’t always have time during the exercise to see what each Op sends, but this time I noticed some had copied the wrong line. These exercises become simple to master after enought practice, but there’s more to the exercises than just the tasks. Reading comprehension is a big element in these exercises. And, you & Bruno are welcome to run Advanced Exericses if you like. We change the sked and that cut the Basic Exercises to 1/mo so anyway, u hv that option if you’d like to run more than 1 every other month btu < K7KY
