An interesting net tonight, for sure. The band was really noisy and I made a couple NCS errors. An hour before the net, I was unsure if I could operate with so many storm cells nearby, but we were at least clear of nearby lightning at net-time. It was a tough night for the faster digital modes.
Danon KJ6UPE checked with a very weak signal and soon faded away. David NX6D had difficulty hearing me and was gone before the net closed. Howard KB6NN also disappeared early, but not due to the band. He had a prior commitment, but couldn’t get my attention when he had to go. I’d neglected to leave sufficient time between transmissions for breaks, late, and visitors. And, I forgot to call for late/visitors periodically thru the net. Reviewing the net-log, I see Keith K7KEV tried to check-in when David and Danon checked in, but I didn’t see him and he didn’t get another chance for quite a while. Thanks for hanging in there, Keith. Sorry for the inconvenience guys; I’m sometimes a few seconds behind the curve.
I’m also learning not to take too much for granted. Tonight, some stations were not copying me 100% on MFSK32 and didn’t have the full rotation list, or missed the instructions for flamp REPORTs. In the future, when the band is noisy, I’ll verify that everyone copied the rotation list 100%. Most of you did very well under challenging conditions. I’ll be more attentive and helpful in the future.
Spring WX and degenerating low-band conditions do not favor my signal. I run the net with an FT-857D. It’s the smallest of 100w multiband rigs. Although it has a large heatsink and fan, hi-dutycycle digital modes generate a lot of heat. I’m reluctant to operate continuously above 40w. I understand the calls for more NCS power, but I’m unwilling to risk my radio. Another solution would be an alternate NCS with more power, better antenna, or better QTH. I’m totally open to this idea; I would welcome an alternate NCS. Relay is another way to work around the issue. In an emergency, we would not fret about the weak signal for very long; we would get busy working up a solution and pass traffic.
Mindy W7ZAP tried an flamp message in PSK125RC4 and was only copied 100% by me. We didn’t bother with fills; the message was long and the band noisy. Not likely to complete the message in PSK125RC4. We’re slowly leaning more about the usefulness of various modes in noisy conditions. After closing the net, we ran a few messages with Keith in THOR22, a mode we explored early last year. It’s just a bit better than half as fast as MFSK32, but has FEC and will be a better choice when the band is noisy. We’ll bring it back next poor band night.
Thanks for your participation and patience. With more members, the net takes more patience. ORCA is a good place to develop digital skills and patience. Emergency conditions usually have long periods of inactivity interspersed with intense activity. I try to keep the net moving along, but that in itself creates issues. Sometimes I forget to look for late check-ins or breaking members. I’m working on timing. You can help me by using the ID macro tag to print your callsign at 0800wf & 2200wf. You can do this while another station is transmitting at 1500wf (except me, I can’t hear in TX). Your short signal is unlikely to bother the transmitting station and I’m able to see your call while still decoding 1500wf.
If all is not to your liking, please email me your concern. We’ll try to accommodate you if we can and we’re generally willing to experiment with our procedures and protocols. I say ‘We’ because I’m just the current chairman; the net belongs to the members and they’ve done a great job of teaching, guiding, shaping, supporting, and participating. Did not copy first NCS Wrap message at all. Many static
crashes, copy is poor. Please use lots of power. I’m set to
50W and may increase if you can’t hear me.
I’ve been running JT65 and JT9 for the last few weeks and
have almost forgotten how to run FLDIGI. Made contacts all
over the world including one in South Africa. Working on
WAS on 17 and 20 meters right now.
Attended Dayton and traded up my Flex rig to a 6500, where
I plan to stay for the forseeable future. Sold the 6300 to
a ham in Alberta.
Copy is improving now, a little.
Getting checksum errors on all checksummed messages.

Missed part of the net. Got here late, and I’m using my laptop
tonight so I had to do a quick fldigi/flmsg update. Very
poor band conditions down here, Mike is very weak (didn’t
get the image), Mindy is mostly inaudible, couldn’t hear
Keith. Don, Doug and David are coming in ok. I was going to
try sending an image with this laptop to see if the noise
stripe pattern from last time occurs again (I think it might be
the old laptop struggling with it, not sure), but I
think I’ll pass until band conditions are a bit more favorable.
Running 25w right now.

Nice turnout of members, but tough band conditions. I’m
guessing the Humbodlt stations also experienced the HUGE
thunderstorm last night and into the wee hours this morning.
Was pretty exciting in Brookings last night.

We haent’ used it for many months now, and I’ve
forgotten the details. We were experimenting around with
modes looking for a combination of robust and speed. We
settled on MFSK32, but we’re not fix there. I’d have to review
THOR 22 to have a meaningful discussion. I do remember
that I liked the mode, but that doesn’t tell you anytinng

out there, but slow and can’t work with Fldigi’s NBEMS
prograoebpf. control codes….

You might consider some testing with THOR 22. I haven’t
had much experience w/
the faster modes of THOR but those that I have tried a a
Cpromise. THOR 22 certain IS a bit slower than MFSK 32,
but
with the FEC involved overall throughput is probably some
better. OH well, tomaaato tomahhhto…. Will let u go,

Keith, I’m glad to hear you enjoy the email reports. I don’t
often hear much back. I appreciate
- We did run some of the THOR modes months ago and I
think the band was better at the time. We settled on
MFSK32
for most conditions. MFSK32 is 120wpm and THOR22 is
78wpm, but much more sure to copy correctly. We can
revisit these
modes anytime. I like to try the different modes and the band
these days impells us to try the more robust modes.
