ORCA DIGITAL NET, Report 14/Apr/15
Check-ins: 5
Traffic: 6

K7IFG Ken T
K7KY Doug T NCS
Tonight, check-in was easy. I had all stations on the ledger before regular check-in. All stations had traffic tonight. Howard KB6NN is working on signal stability and wants to know where we copy him on the waterfall. I copied him 1490-1495 for the few moments I was watching.
Ken K7IFG sent traffic in flamp, 5xPSK63R. It was very fast and copied 100% by two stations and two stations did not fully copy. Ken sent the missing blocks in MFSK64 and David NX6D filled the message to 100%. Howard did not copy the initial or fill, but he later copied a complete message from Mindy W7ZAP in MFSK64. The difference here was probably proximity. Mindy was at 25w and Ken at 50w, but Mindy is much closer to Howard than Ken.
Mindy W7ZAP sent a ICS-213 message in BPSK500. 75% of the net copied it 100% with one fill. It’s good to be experimenting with these modes. Some are very fast and some of the fast modes are not too wide and do well with average band conditions.
We had digital neighbors tonight at 2200wf, but they caused no interference. It might have been MFSK-32 or a mode of similar bandwidth. It makes me think we can relay traffic at 0800 and 2200wf in MFSK-32 w/o effecting the net at 1500. That would be good for me; I could keep an eye on the relay stations and know when they’re returning. For broader modes, we will have to go further down the band. We’ll try the relay routine next net.
When we use flamp, it’s important to send the flamp REPORT whether or not you need a fill. When no fill is needed, the REPORT sends CONFIRMED. Now, the originating station knows who copied 100% and who needs which blocks.
As to prompting each station for every transmission: ORCA began with NCS prompting each station. The members asked me to send a list and let them transmit in order. It worked for quite some time. It was especially effective when everyone was paying attention and the net was sometimes as large as 12 stations. It saved time and typing. I’m OK to continue prompting each transmission if that’s what you want. My goal is to facilitate smooth and productive exchange between the stations and I want to do this in a manner that suits most members
The net was small tonight and concluded by 2015. If you missed tonight, we missed you too. Thanks to all who participated and thanks for sharing your knowledge and skills with the net. I hope to see you all next week.

Tonight, we continue with NCS prompting members for transmission. I'll call you to transmit, so please wait
for my call. If you need to break-in, send your callsign. I'll leave time between transmissions for breaks
and late/visiting stations.
If you're using flamp or another mode, tell us before your traffic. After you send/receive traffic in a
different mode, please return to MFSK-32.
Tonight we'll use the RELAY feature in flamp. W7ZAP & K7IFG will QSY to 3.594 to relay traffic, return, and
pass that traffic to the net, simulating relay conditions. It will be a short message so the relay stations
don't miss too much. The message will not be compressed, so stations w/o flamp can read it.
Following Announcments and comments, NCS will call stations in order. If you don't have traffic in flmsg,
you're welcome to keyboard.
Following traffic , a round, of reception reports & comments. Voice comments optional after net.

In 2010, the Office of Inspector General for Health and Human Services said that bad hospital care contributed
to the deaths of 180,000 patients in Medicare alone in a given year.
Now comes a study in the current issue of the Journal of Patient Safety that says the numbers may be much
higher — between 210,000 and 440,000 patients each year who go to the hospital for care suffer some type of
preventable harm that contributes to their death, the study says.
That would make medical errors the third-leading cause of death in America, behind heart disease, which is the
first, and cancer, which is second.
The new estimates were developed by John T. James, a toxicologist at NASA—s space center in Houston who runs
an advocacy organization called Patient Safety America.
Asked about the higher estimates, a spokesman for the American Hospital Association said the group has more
confidence in the IOM—s estimate of 98,000 deaths. ProPublica asked three prominent patient safety researcher
s to review James— study, however, and all said his methods and findings were credible.

Good copies on all transmissions. The fill blocks looked correct to me. The second transmission mode (of the fills) looked like it was very good at punching through the noise.
I don’t know if you are aware, but there have been a number of transmissions close to our work, but they haven’t interfered with us, or vice versa.
Things at this QTH very hectic tonight due to a major change in my LAN this afternoon. I’m getting it sorted out, but still have plenty to do.
Thanks all.

Reception report for W7ZAP…
KB6NN 100% copy – no FLMSG (steady signal @ 1492 on the WF)
NX6D 100% copy – no FLMSG
K7IFG 100% copy + FLAMP (2)
K7KY 100% copy – no FLMSG
Looks like when I did some ‘house cleaning’ on my computer, I deleted my old FLMSG and GUESSING i don’t have the path correct to the new version… will fix that!

Mindy W7ZAP K
