Yikes! A very difficult band tonight. It took both of us, one as NCS and one as Relay, to run ck-in. A third of tonight’s ck-ins were Relayed. Thanks to Gene W1EEP, Dennis W6DLW, and Steve W7WSV for Relays. They were crucial to completing the Roster. Many regular members were unable to copy NCS or the Relay stations.
We had a pipeline to Utah, but nearly zero connection to stations North and South. Rick K0KEX in Smithville, N/W Missouri, copied us clearly. He probably could have worked the NBEMS Exercise too. Rick used his Kenwood TS 480 SAT @ 43w into a G5RV. Check his test images below. Richard KK6RJR in Bakersfield,CA didn’t copy either test image, but copied 86% of the FLAMP transmission in PSK-250R. John KD0NBHT in Kansas City,MO also copied 86% of the PSK-250R transmission and 100% of four FLAMP transmissions in the Traffic Round. That’s a remarkable testament to FLDIGI’s ability to decode signals in very adverse condx and FLAMP’s ability to minimize resend time and bandwidth.
The NBEMS Exercise was comprised of Utah stations only and we CONFIRMED all but one Op that lost contact. This was our most challenging band in recent memory. We generally expect 80m to settle down after Fall. The DST time shift usually improves connectivity. HF is always challenging for all modes of operation. When we have this much difficulty with digital operations, you can imagine the challenge for Phone nets. Hats-Off to those who persist thru very difficult band condx. It’s another factor that impels us to practice regularly. Many of you have persisted through these difficult seasons year after year.
We hope our regular members aren’t annoyed by repeated nudges and suggestions regarding very basic net Protocol compliance. We’re very appreciative of everyone that works the net and contributes to presenting a working model of efficient Amateur digital networking. We don’t expect incoming Ops to grasp and implement every Protocol in a couple sessions. It’s a lot to learn; we’re a training and practice net and we’re generally error-tolerant. We don’t all learn at the same pace or in the same manner.
We rarely get an Op that persists in ignoring Protocol and working as they like. We always try to resolve Protocol compliance issues off-air. We email them and/or Phone them if we can. When we exhaust our alternatives and patience, we’ll ask them to practice elsewhere. If we’ve no alternative path, we’ll ask them on-air. Thanks again to each of you that contribute to making ORCA a successful digital training and practice net. We work as a team; it’s the only way we work.

We’re approaching our 9th Anniversary in January 2022. Much has changed since we set out to develop a digital traffic-handling training net. Many of you have been with us for years and our achievements are certainly the result of the time and energy each of you have invested all these years. It’s been an inspiring adventure in teamwork; certainly the most satisfying radio project we’ve participated in.
Today, America is much different than 2013. A Pandemic, real or contrived, social, political, and financial upheaval, and deep uncertainty about the future, contribute to a stressful background to everyday life. So much has changed, it feels like we’re in another Country and another time. We sense further disruptions ahead and anticipate having to make changes in our own activities. The future has never seemed so uncertain. Stay focused; be prepared to adapt quickly. Keep friends and family close.

Tonight’s NBEMS Exercise returns to the FLMSG form ICS-213.
Our first use of the Path Evaluation Macro highlighted an interesting question. What causes transmitted images to decode fragmented? Fragmented images are not the same as slanted images related to soundcard calibration. Check-out images sent by macro in last week’s Net Report. Note that the image we received from Tom WB7EUX in Joseph,OR was decoded differently by NCSs. This is unusual. Note too that Mi`e8n6 Eu³ahawsc1eoÈ:@ jW2?
Tonight’s NBEMS Exercise returns to the FLMSG form ICS-213.
Our first use of the Path Evaluation Macro highlighted an interesting question. What causes transmitted images to decode fragmented? Fragmented images are not the same as slanted images related to soundcard calibration. Check-out images sent by macro in last week’s Net Report. Note that the image we received from Tom WB7EUX in Joseph,OR was decoded differently by NCSs. This is unusual. Note too that Mindy’s image, while fragmented, is sharper that Doug’s. Further down the page, we both received Steve W7WSV’s images fragmented. Reviewing past beginning/ending images, you’ll see that Steve often decodes our image transmissions fragmented. Steve suggests that image fragmentation may be caused by a number of factors, like propagation, PC processor speed and/or memory, antenna, path conditions, etc. If you know the answer, we’d love to hear it.
Our antennas are 70′ apart and 90deg opposed, one 210′ @ 80′, the other 135′ @ 145′. We usually receive images a bit different in clarity, but identical in structure. Receiving a single image transmission one correct and one fragmented is unusual. Multipath might be responsible. Whatever causes images we receive from Steve to fragment seems to be consistent. These two clues may help us understand the issue.
We recently heard from Matthew Curtin KD8TTE in Ohio. You may recall Matthew was principle to adding digital to the Buckeye Net last year. He’s made some changes and we think you’ll find his approach to EMCOMM training interesting. Here’s an excerpt from his email:
“I’m writing to let you know about some developments since we last talked about the Buckeye Net Mixed. We’re still at it, though no longer under the auspices of Buckeye Net, and now as an AUXCOMM net in connection with the annual BLACK SWAN exercise. Details including our training program with video instruction, tasks for the week, on-air operations, and ongoing projects are all available from https://www.blackswancomex.org/net.
I suspect that your members might be most interested in the QSP radio newsletter that we’ve developed as an outgrowth of the BLACK SWAN training.
https://www.blackswancomex.org/qsp.
By the way I’ll also be presenting at the ARRL Annual Convention early next year in Orlando. Quite a trek but if any of your folks are going to be there I hope that we’ll have a chance to meet and chat for a bit.”
Check this video for an overview of Blackswan exercises: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7FMnxHVpio
Matthew’s Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCA1NTJpAdzOEtP-vJ7_TH-Q
Next Thursday is Western Digital Net’s ‘Newcomers Net’. At WDN, NTS traffic can be sent directly into the NTS digital backbone. It’s easy; learn how during Newcomers Net. Or, check-in QRU (no traffic) and participate in the Comment Round. Net members are interested in your station, experience, radio responsibilities, etc. WDN is friendly and supportive. Check-it-out, Thursday, same time and freq as ORCA.
Whew! Tough band tonight. Tnx for the relays… much needed.
Test images to UT look good… elsewhere… who knows!

ORCA < K7KY
Wow! Tough band tonight. It took both of us to run ck-in and compile the Roster.
Attn’ CW Ops: CW Ops tend to text in all lowercase. For digital operations, it’s important to send your CALLSIGN in CAPS. As you know, HF is noisy. Your CALLSIGN in CAPS stands out nicely from the noise and lower case traffic. Thank you.
An important aspect of our training curriculum is parsing and implementing written instructions. It’s fundamental to passing digital traffic correctly. Our format and Exercises contain elements designed to increase ‘reading comprehension’.
Net Protocols define net operations. Net Protocols are not suggestions; they’re operating directives. Following net Protocols reflects your understanding of net operations. Following net Protocols helps present a consistent model of efficient Amateur digital networking for incoming Operators. You correct participation is important. Thanks for helping us manage a useful digital training net.
Rainbow Canyons ARC digital Ops have really contributed to ORCA’s development and success. We really appreciate their participation and support.
Jaye KE6SLS has been with us nearly nine years now. He joined when we moved to HF, very soon after beginning.
