ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Kyle N4KBT in Meridian,ID. We’ve worked with Kyle before on the ID ERC Digital Net. Good to have him aboard. And, it’s good to see two old-hands the band has sidelined this Summer. Greg KG7D had a solid signal from Carson City,NV; at net-end we heard from Rick K0KEX in Smithville,MO. We couldn’t read his VidID, but text at 1500 was about 95%. Rick is an ORCA regular when the band cooperates.

We’re nearing the end of Summer Sked. On September 21st we’ll resume the NBEMS Exercise and Traffic Round. Every few sessions, we’ll replace this Exercise with a one-off exercise, Mode Shoot-Out, member presentation, etc. We’ll notify you in advance on the website, weekly Announcements, and Net Reports.

The NBEMS Exercise and Traffic Round simulate many aspects of digital traffic-handling. Our Traffic Round is part of the NBEMS Exercise; it’s not for actual Traffic. Stations that complete the Advanced Exercise submit their results in the Traffic Round, as they would submit Traffic on an Emergency or Traffic net.

We hope ORCA veterans will continue working the NBEMS Exercise. Their participation creates a working example of how efficiently digital traffic can be handled under pressure. We wouldn’t ask them to work the Exercise every session; there would be no room for incoming Ops. These ORCA vets already know this Exercise perfectly. We do hope they’ll follow Early Ck-In and help us log enough Active stations to make the Exercise useful. Overall net-time limits the NBEMS Exercise to eight stations. The net is already long and many Ops are in an earlier time zone, some two zones earlier. We try to keep net sessions to a reasonable length.

When we’ve only 2-3 Ops in the Exercise, we usually CONFIRM them quickly, sometime in a single pass. There’s no opportunity to use Relay stations for Fills. When there’s no need for the 2nd & 3rd pass in more robust modes, Monitoring stations are unable to complete the Exercise. We’ve had as many as seven Monitoring/Lurking stations CONFIRMING their work in the after-net Monitor’s Session. More Monitoring and Lurking stations are engaged in the Exercise than anyone knows. We occasionally hear from SWL folks too.

We’ll do our best to maintain net consistency and change the details to keep it from being exactly the same every session. You can help us keep the NBEMS Exercise a useful learning and training experience by working the Exercise when the Active Roster is thin. Practice keeps your skills sharp and provides incoming stations an excellent working example.

Thanks to Brad WA7HHE, we learned that Gene W1EEP in Pine Valley,UT also has a wildfire near his home. Gene didn’t mention the fire, nor has he mentioned that his responsibility as EOC Planning Section Chief in Pine Valley. He’s also modest. Gene has been with ORCA longer than we recall. He has more Signal Evaluation Images on the ORCA server than anyone. No-one is even close. Only Mindy W7ZAP could discover when Gene joined ORCA. She has written logs from the very first session. Today, there’s a large stack of these journals.

Jaye KE6SLS’s Comments tonight underlined observations in tonight’s Announcements. Reading Comprehension is fundamental to working digital nets and handling digital traffic. Last Monday’s Humboldt Digital Emergency Net Ck-In was close to a ClusterCluck. Numerous transmissions w/o Pre-Tone, numerous doubles, numerous stations sending TxID, coat-tails, and general non-compliance with ck-in protocol. Difficult band condx compound Op errors at ck-in.

Ck-in is a busy time for NCS. NCSs set ck-in protocol to optimize acknowledging each ck-in and compile an accurate Roster. For most nets, orderly execution of net events depends on an accurate Roster. At every net, read ck-in protocol and send ONLY what’s asked. You can be certain NCS notices and appreciates your effort. Every attentive Op notices too.

With ck-in protocol in mind, monitor the ck-in process. You may be surprised by the number of stations ignoring protocol. As a Training net, ORCA puts strong emphasis on Reading Comprehension. Compliance with net protocols creates a good example of how orderly and efficiently Amateur digital nets can operate. Clear and consistent protocols and engaged and attentive members are the essential components. Thanks for helping your NCSs run orderly and efficient nets.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Even though we’re skipping the NBEMS Exercise during Summer Sked, there are other Exercises you can do on your own to continue learning and polishing your digital-net skills. Digital net Ck-In is an opportunity to test and improve Reading Comprehension. Read Ck-In protocols carefully and monitor Ck-In. How close do checking stations comply with Ck-In protocol? This is good practice for handling digital traffic. When we don’t parse instructions correctly, we’re unable to implement them correctly.

Digital net operations and traffic-handling both entail following written instructions. It’s an acquired skill you can practice every day. Macro development is another skill you can develop on you own. Begin simply by altering FLDIGI’s default macros and the macros on our website Macro page. You can experiment with these macros by Editing or substituting different Tags (commands ). The Macro Editor has a menu of macro Tags in the right pane. Try your modified macros with the radio off. Work out the bugs before using them on the air. There may be numerous code configurations that produce similar results. You don’t have to code elegant macros from the start. Get them working as intended. As you use the Macro Editor, you’ll soon learn it’s nature and your macros will be more efficient. We’ll include macro development in as many net Exercises as we can. You’ll jump-start your learning curve by experimenting with them in your spare time.

Remember, this Thursday is WDN’s Newcomer’s Net. It’s designed to help incoming digital Ops learn Traffic net protocols, NBEMS software, and digital networking conventions in a relaxed setting. Many of your ORCA colleagues are WDN regulars. They work closely with Steve K6ETA WDN/NCS, demonstrating procedures and answering questions. It’s the perfect time to learn Traffic net protocols, routines, and conventions w/o feeling pressed. Did u notice the glitch btwn the roster and Announcements? When a File is sent in FLMSG 4.0.19 and then followed by a macro using the <FILE TAG the transmitter starts and stops… It’s a bug I’ve submitted, but still unanswered BK

NCS < K6ETA Tahoe Caldor Fire update for KA7ERV

According to caltopo.com the fire came up US HWY50 and crossed South Upper Truckee rd just South of Lower Echo Lake burning through houses along Apache Rd and up towards the garbage dump road, then up the mountain into Heavenly. Most of the neighborhoods North of Elks Club rd have been spared so far, but anything to the south may have burned. The hardest hit areas are Blitzen and Wasabe road area. Also Rainbow Pioneer Trail and Navahoe Rd areas not looking very good.

The fire is currently most active on Trimmer Peak.

Hope that helps and fingers crossed for the rest of the neighborhoods up there!

Thanks to all ORCA ops for another great net! < K6ETA

Monday D.E.N. was crazy with lots of doubles, check-ins with TXiD, and many coat-tail check-ins. Through all that, I think we may have set a record of 15 check-ins! Sure keeps this old NCS busy. Participants really need to READ & UNDERSTAND a net preamble where NCS gives exact instructions for check in protocol.

Painting crew showed up a day early. Today the old slum house received a coat of primer, and much of it has now been painted. It looks plenty rough, but no longer the eyesore it was :|

Locally, there is FIRE. There is fire and more fire. I don’t know HOW the first responders are able to deal with all this crazy mess. I do hope folks are heeding the evac warnings, those who try to stay behind only make it more life threatening for the firefighters. Evac centers are quickly filling up here On top of the fires is COVID-19. Our medical folks are now so jammed that trying to keep up with reporting is near impossible. FOR GOD SAKES BE CAREFUL. We are loosing far too many people here

Dennis W6DLW, put me on the Newsletter list for his club’s newsletter. I am so impressed and thoroughly enjoy reading them. GREAT WORK Dennis!

I have some weird noise <locally?> but signals are still jumping in here gangbusters.

Good air here last TWO days and sure glad of it. Really helping the painters here.

Great to hear you all tonight. Be well and be careful.

Nothing exciting here. We’ve been in the path of the smoke for the last month or so. Everything is covered in ash.

Had some fun working the Kansas QP last weekend. Let the wife Subrina -KI7OAL work it. I only got to use the radio before she got up on Sunday morning. Neighter of us was able to spell anyting. Could find any of the “A” stations.

Some of you might have see the article in the ARRL Letter about Mines on the air https://minesontheair.com/ Looks like fun! Plan on getting out to activate a few once the smoke clears a bit.

Hope everyone is safe and healthy,

ORCA welcomes Kyle N4KBT in Meridian,ID. And welcome back to Greg KG7D in Carson City,NV.

Doug & I noticed the other day that our pre-amps were on. I don’t check that setting very often and we think it must have been enabled the last time we programmed our FT-857Ds. I prefer to give signal reports w/no pre-amp. You may notice that my signal report for ur stn is lower than usual… that’s why. A good reminder to myself to keep a closer eye on that setting.

Thanks to all the stns who email their test images… very handy to see how well NCS is getting out at the beginning of the net

Hope everyone is well & safe from fires, and other disasters taking place recently. Gene, hope the rain extinguishes the fire by you.

TU Doug. I remember when it was you and Mindy doing the EVAC. God those were bad days for us all!

Anyway, that is a VERY GOOD REMINDER to all net users. PREAMPS are a real NO-NO for low band use. that is 60m, 40M, 80M and 160M. If you are REALLY INTO NOISE, then turn them on, but iif you want better S/n then turn off the preamp, or in k7ky/w7zap’s case, the IPO. ??? heehee
