The end of Summer Sked and return to regular sessions on September 18th will be here before we know it.  Although we’ve only heard from a couple members with thoughts about updating ORCA’s curriculum, we’re definitely not complaining. We frequently hear from members that appreciate practicing with the ORCA team.  If we were asleep-at-the-wheel, participation and email would give us a ‘Wake-Up!’ we couldn’t miss. Our overall impression is that the majority of ORCA Ops are satisfied with the program. We appreciate those that do make suggestions. We’ve implemented many of them. Our NBEMS exercise was inspired by Bliss W7RUG, the Idaho ERC Net NCS before Dave K7DV. Enabling ORCA veterans to skip the NBEMS Exercise to make room for incoming Ops with an * at ck-In was Steve K6ETA’s suggestion.

Ongoing participation is probably our best measure of member satisfaction. Participation has continued to increase. Participation in the weekly NBEMS Exercise did begin to taper in Spring. Some due to better WX and longer days and some maybe due to our veteran Ops learning the routines so well they didn’t feel the need for weekly practice. We understand and are looking to adjust the NBEMS Exercise frequency to their needs and ORCA’s agenda. These long-term ORCA Ops are critical to our training agenda. It’s their spot-on participation that teaches the incoming Ops how these tactics and routines are executed correctly. If you’ve ever participated in or monitored NBEMS Exercises with mostly veterans or mostly newbies, you probably noticed a significant difference. Exercises with mostly vets are usually smooth and brief, while Exercise w/o them can be awkward and long. They really accelerate the learning curve for everyone. Although they make the Exercise appear easy, the Exercises are not easy. They require commitment, focus, and repetition. They include a lot of undocumented strategies and routines; things more easily learned by example, than explanation. Our veteran Ops are the core of our teaching/training curriculum. Without them, ORCA would not be the same.

Speaking of ORCA veterans, Gene W1EEP in Pine Valley,ID has been off the air since lightning zapped his station last month. He was back tonight using his back-up gear. It’s good to have him back. Summer has been tough on his path to NCS, but he’s weathered this seasonal obstacle for years. Gene has more test images in the database than any other station. We may need to increase server space for Gene (-:

We learned tonight that some of our Utah members are experiencing extreme flooding. Ken KR7KR is seriously impacted. Please keep Ken and family in your thoughts and prayers. When we can’t do anything in the physical realm, our supportive thoughts are more effective than doing nothing. Everything in this Universe is connected in one way or another.

Another faithful ORCA Op to keep in mind is Charles W5CLE in Vancouver,WA. The extreme heat last month put him in the hospital for a few days, but he’s back home and feeling a good bit better. We hope to see him on the air in the near future. Charles was instrumental in bringing a number of his ARC digital friends to ORCA. Today, they lead digital VHF training in Vancouver.

Jaye KE6SLS is running a VHF NBEMS Training net in Humboldt County,CA: Humboldt NBEMS Net. We recently received his latest Net Report. He’s doing a great job teaching digital EMCOMM skills and digital net routines. Contact Jaye for an email copy of his Report. It’s a good read and worth your time. Hats-Off to Jaye and Humboldt ARC digital Ops.

The HUMBOLDT WINLINK WEDNESDAY NET now has a website: https://humboldtwinlinkwednesday.net/

We’ve posted an improved VidID Ck-In Macro for ORCA DIGITAL NET & Western Digital Net to: http://orcadigitalnet.com/macros/ Check it out; it’ll check you in and LOCK your cursor @ 1500wf even if you weren’t at 1500. It’s smarter than the last VidID macro.

Don’t forget Western Digital Net every Thursday evening, Steve K6ETA/NCS, same time/freq as ORCA. Steve has begun a once-a-month Newcomer’s Net. Tomorrow will be the first session. A perfect time to log in with a QST or just QRU (Q-code for No-Traffic) to participate in the Comment Round or possibly help Steve by Relaying a light signal. 80m nets during Solar Minimum are challenging for NCS. Net Control Stations always appreciate Relays for stations they don’t copy.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

September 18th, the end of Summer Sked, will be here soon. We’ve only heard from a couple members regarding changes in our training curriculum. We welcome your ideas and hope you’ll join us in conducting exercises. If you have a useful exercise, consider conducting it yourself; we’ll help you prepare to succeed and enjoy yourself.

We’ve posted an improved VidID Ck-In Macro for ORCA DIGITAL NET & Western Digital Net to our website Macro page.

It Enables RxID & Disables TxID, prints your Call @ 2000WF, positions & LOCKS the Cursor @ 1500WF, & returns Modem to current Mode. It can also check you in QNX or QRU (QRU 4 WDN).

VidID is useful at digital-net ck-in and for getting NCS attention during net w/o interrupting. Remember, NCS cannot see VidIDs while transmitting. VidIDs suffer similar degradation to text in tough condx and can be hard to read. Use the large font printed horizontally to give NCS the best shot at reading your VidID. Config FLDIGI for VidID: Config/IDs/Video/. Deselect all 5 options. This prints VidID horizontally in a large font. Set Char/Rows to a value equal to or greater than the characters in your Callsign.

Jaye KE6SLS is running a VHF NBEMS Training net in Humboldt County,CA: Humboldt NBEMS Net. Today, we received his Net Report for Monday’s net.

During Summer Sked, we don’t run the after-net Monitor’s session, but we call for Monitors and Lurkers in the Comment Round after the Active stations.

ORCA NCS< K7KY, Yesterday our Monsoon weather for the last two weeks has statred to stablize. On the July 26th mid afternoon a large Monsoon Cell hovered over North Cedar City and Enoch, Utah and dumped several inches of rain in a very short time. At last count there are over 200 homes (which might be higher now) that received damage from flooding basements to water coming in to their homes. Landscaping washed away and I’m sure many other problems. Red Cross set up a shelter for those that needed it. Our very own Ken R.(KR7KR) was a victim in this flooding onslaught. Many people from the surrounding cities and county areas responded to assist the victims in the clean up as well as food, water and other needed items. The situation is on going. Stay safe. 73 to all. W6DLW

ORCA < WA7HHE, article I ran across for my comments asks Do you have a 5 minute plan? Article states I Had 5 Minutes to Evacuate from a California Wildfire There was no time. I figured whatever burned could be replaced and herded the kids, dog and cats out to the van. As we pulled out of the driveway, a fire truck with lights flashing and siren blaring pulled into our spot. For a good read check out https://www.govtech.com/em/preparedness/i-had-5-minutes-to-evacuate-from-a-california-wildfire

K7KY < K6ETA RR and I agree! It’s interesting to see 20 QNX check-ins and only five active, even when there’s no exercise? I wonder what we can do to entice stations to participate more?

Speaking of that, the WDN (this time/freq on Thursday) is having it’s first Newcomer’s Net in two days… so if anyone wants a net dedicated to helping new comers get more active, there’s your chance!

Nice WX here… clear and 81 degrees at present.

BTN < K6ETA

FB Steve tnx 4 the info abt the Newcomers Net @ WDN I meant to put that in Announcement, but forgot and, we also wonder about all the QNX stations, but after wondering we still don’t know much and we’re really happy they do ck-in regularly… if we need them, they’ll know where to find us and information they may need… I think more will be working the exercises when we get back to a regular sked in Sept… We’re thinking to only run the NBEMS Exercise once or twice per month leaving the other sessions for exercises and/or presentations by members… WE hope that breaking up the exercise sessions will have more of the real digital veterans working the exercise… it’s they’re participation that creates the working example that incoming Ops are learning from. Their participation is really improtant to the Exercise BK Next 4 Comments is Don KJ7VGV < NCS

https://www.timesofisrael.com/israeli-uk-data-offer-mixed-signals-on-vaccines-potency-against-delta-strain/amp/?__twitter_impression=true&s=09

Since last week Israel has started giving all it’s vacinated citizens a booster as reported by the BBC.

If anyone remembers the movie Groundhog day well here we go again!

Nevada is mandating masks indoors even if vaccinated. I talked to Washoe county health dept. and asked if they were going start giving a “Booster” vacine. One person responded it could happen in a couple months to a couple weeks weren’t sure. Another person there responed “we follow the CDC guidelines”.

Since a majority of the states defer to the CDC we’ll have to wait and see what they come up with. I also see they’re pushing for everyone to get vaccinated. Even requiring it in some places!

Sri, no sig reports… but copied 90% of ck-ins very well. Wow! Early (12) ck-ins were stacked up. Quite a challenge! Well done Doug

Bravo to Jaye KE6SLS and the VHF NBEMS training he’s doing with Humboldt County Ops. They’ll be a great asset to any digital net or EMCOMM event.

I’ve enjoyed the Humboldt Winlink Wed Net (Matthew KN6CEI/NCS) . Has made me get more knowledgeable and handy w/Winlink.

I didn’t realize that UT had a monsoon season. Wishing KR7KR a quick recovery from the flooding. Tnx Brad WA7HHE for the 5 min plan… will read… we need a 5 min plan. Hope everyone is staying safe from wildfires & CV19. Good to see all on the WF tonite.

73,
Mindy W7ZAP

TU Mindy we do need a 5min plan (-: BK are there any questions of follow ups to the previous comments? come now < K7KY

Are there any comments from the QNX stations or Lurkers? < NCS

OK a quick NCS comment b4 we close… we’re thinking to change the NBEMS Exercise to once or twice monthly to leave room for other events and presentations, and not to burn out the veteran digital Ops we really depend on to make this net work… Their participation in the NBEMS Exercise is the learning presentation newer Ops are emulating.. The Exercise is important.. your thouight and observations are really welcome BK
