Thanks for continuing to support ORCA DIGITAL NET during a very unusual Summer. The combination of COVID19 and extreme social, political, and financial disruptions have combined for a summer like no other. And then, there’s extreme WX conditions, wildfires, floods, and droughts. Yikes! What’s happening?
In Announcements, we asked for your input regarding ORCA’s training agenda. Steve K6ETA knocked out a list of ten suggestions before the Comment Round. Here’s his list of suggestions for ORCA training activities. Consider his ideas and submit your thoughts on his suggestions and/or exercises of your own. Digital EMCOMM is a wide and growing arena. As NCS, we are occupied with maintaining and presenting the net weekly and may miss a longer perspective while attending to the present. Digital tools, protocols, and strategies are increasing. We’ll appreciate your help in keeping ORCA current and relevant. Thanks to Steve for the Jump-Start. Here’s his suggestions:
1] Sharing, demonstrating and testing a useful macro
2] Helping new ops get Vid ID setup and test it
3] Use ICS-213 form both ways
4] Teach newer ops to send images
5] Modes workshop (when to use each mode and how)
6] Setup TXiD and RXiD configs
7] FLMsg config menu -what each setting does
8] FLAmp config menu – what each setting does and why ORCA uses certain features
9] The normal FLAmp traffic exercise (just not every week)
10] How to use filters to overcome close VARA and RTTY signals (useful tonight!)
…. Newbies could use a little extra help with setup too, so maybe a net focused on newcomers from time to time?
As to Newbies, we’ve always been mindful of Newbies. We were Newbies ourselves in 2013. Today, we depend on local ARC VHF/UHF nets to teach entry-level computer and digital operations. Helping incoming Ops with basic computer and digital knowledge come up to speed is part of ongoing operations; off-net, we assist them by email, telephone, and HF. Today, ORCA isn’t structured to also teach entry-level Computer and FLDIGI during net sessions. It’s beyond our mission and available time. Nets are already long; regulars would be gathering wool. More ARCs are providing entry-level training these days. We provide support to all ARCs that seek our input. These training nets and friendly Elmers are doing a great job. Numerous local digital nets are run by ORCA Ops. ORCA picks up where they leave off.
While reviewing Steve suggestions, please consider how you might conduct an Exercise. We’d love to share net responsibilities with you. Guest presenters will encourage others. ORCA belongs to all of us; we encourage you to take the helm. It’s a training net where mistakes are part of learning. Be bold; you’re among supportive colleagues. We’ve always hoped others would want to learn NCS skills. It’s no harder than what you’ve already mastered. Add a few NCS routines to the skills you already own.
Repost: Remember that digital modes are ideal for low-power communications, especially at Solar Minimum. QSOs are perfect for finding the minimum power necessary for solid decoding. It only takes a few minutes of back’n forth to find the minimum power level. Our power setting should never be ‘set’n forget’. Some digital modes will decode signals too weak to hear or see on the waterfall. Entry-level radios like the ICOM-7300 have outstanding digital filters, capable of isolating weak signals in very adverse condx. Develop the habit of using minimum power and you’ll be well poised for a loss of grid power during emergency operations when power-conservation keeps you on the air.
Most ORCA Ops are active in their radio community. Here’s what Darrell W6ADZ was doing in Nevada last weekend:
“… Just spent 2 full days Friday through Sunday providing Winlink message traffic for a 100 mile foot race on the Tahoe Rim Trail. I was at an aid station 9,000 feet elevation. Barely made it up there on the deeply rutted and rocky road and two locked gates. I am still recovering from physical effort and lack of sleep. I am 78 yrs old. Here are two photos of my station.”

Thinking ahead to resuming weekly NBEMS Exercises, we’d appreciate your thoughts and suggestions. We occasionally hear the Exercises are boring. We consider all feedback and try to meet the interest of the majority. Our membership includes a large number of Ops with extensive EMCOMM credentials and experience. We deeply value their support and participation. They are the reason our nets run so efficiently. Their contribution to training incoming Ops is central. Incoming Ops learn digital net protocols and conventions and NBEMS traffic-handling by Observing and Emulating these seasoned veterans. Without them, ORCA would not be the same.
If the Exercises are boring a number of Ops, we need to review and adjust operations. ORCA belongs to the members. We want to know how the net works or doesn’t work for you. Operating ORCA as we do takes a good bit of time and energy. You too commit a lot of time and energy. Our agenda is to present a comprehensive NBEMS training experience in a reasonable amount of time. We listen closely to our net colleagues and try to steer a course that’s useful to as many as possible.
For email notice when the Net Report is posted, write: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com
Thanks for emailing the ORIGINAL Signal Evaluation images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

ORCA NCS< Doug/Mindy, Thanks for being here to do the net. Well, we finally received some rain. However, it all came at once. Yesterday afternoon it started raining and for the next hour just poured. A Summer Monsoon Storm at its best. My weather station received 1.3 inches of rain in that hour. I read where some areas the intensity was 3 inches per hour for about 15 minutes. Weather service forecasting more over the next few days. I’ll be sending out the RCARC Summer Field Day 2021 Ater Action Report on Thursday so check your e-mail. Have a great week. 73 to all. W6DLW

Additional news reports also stating vaccinated people (both doses) are now being infected. Individual having been vaccinated is expected to recover without hospitalization. Note: current vaccines are ~95% effective. Having learned a vaccinated family member has come down with Covid today I’ve ordered additional n-95 masks today. Consider wearing a mask in public even though vaccinated.
With the new more transmissible Delta variant, could spread through our un-vaccinated population like wildfire. Tokyo Olympics not ruling out an 11th hour cancellation. Be safe: WA7HHE

K7KY < K6ETA Thoughts for potential ORCA exercises
I’d just don’t do exactly the same thing every week and folks will look forward to the neat a bit more. Newbies could use a little extra help with setup too, so maybe a net focused on newcomers from time to time?
That’s off the top of my head anyways… BTN < K6ETA

Sri, no signal reports tonight. Good copy, despite the QRM @ 2000. Rc’d email from Gene W1EEP saying a lightning strike took out his computer and other items. That’s a disappointment. Doug & I experienced a similar situation a number of years ago.
Welcome back to Craig KD7CL, our radio neighbor up in Coos County. Looking forward to reading W6DLW AAR. Sounds like an atmospheric river hit UT. Concord grapes… I’m green w/envy Great ideas Steve… tnx!
Transitioning from Win8 to Linux is slow… still working on resolving an audio issue. Happy to be returning to Linux… a bit of a learning curve, but some of what I learned from my last go around is coming back.
Hope everyone is staying safe from seasonal wildfires and global pandemics. Good to see all on the WF

Just a quick note. Our NBEMS net this week included a BAND shootout. Was fun as I sent a compressed flamp file with directions on the rest of the net, which also included a file manipulation exercise. It was a first for several of the ops. We did well on 2m and 70cm, but 6m wasn’t working as most of the members were in USB when they should have been in FM mode. All agreed that we want to repeat this exercise!
