With only four Active stations, and 20 total, the net was shorter than usual tonight. Because our Traffic Round only processes traffic from the FLAMP Exercise, it’s also short when we have few stations working the FLAMP Exercise. At the other end, 4 Monitoring stations participated in the after-net Monitor’s Session. This is working well; more QNX ck-ins are working the FLAMP Exercises and checking their work in the after-net session. This helps limit the length of our regular session and enables newer stations to learn the Exercises w/o time pressure.
The team supporting 20m Digital Net on Saturday morning have suspended the net until 18/Sep/21. Joe W7LUX and Steve W7WSV will soon be supporting family members recovering from surgery. We’ve not succeeded in finding volunteer relay stations; it’s a timely decision. We’ll take another look at it when Summer is over and band condx are potentially better. Saturday AM seems an unintuitive time to conduct a training net, but SATERN has been well supported for years. We’ll see how it shakes out in September.
ORCA DIGITAL NET is supported by numerous Amateur Radio Clubs, but they’re not all apparent to the casual observer. Rainbow Canyon ARC in Cedar City,UT is an exception. RCARC probably has the most club members that also belong to ORCA. RCARC is an exceptionally active club, deeply engaged with their community Health and Civic services. Their club meeting often reduce our Roster by 5 or 6 Ops. We also notice lighter Rosters when the Humboldt County ARC meets monthly on Tuesday evening. There are a few more ARC members on ORCA, but we don’t always notice their meeting as they have fewer dual members. Members in the KS/MO area have had a difficult time working ORCA this summer; band condx have left them out. So too, Ops in Idaho are having trouble working the net this summer. We look forward to the beginning of better condx later this month when day-time begins to diminish.
We are also grateful for the participation of many EMCOMM Ops affiliated with ARES, RACES, AES, etc. Focusing on NBEMS traffic-handling as an independent digital training net enables us to work with anyone interested in digital traffic-handling. We practice the fundamentals of efficient digital networking in order to process emergency radio traffic with speed and accuracy. When you’re well grounded in digital networking and NBEMS traffic-handling, you’ll be an asset to any Emergency or Traffic net. Some may have specific traffic-forms to learn, but that should be easy when you’re already comfortable working a brisk digital net.
Hats-Off to Jaye KE6SLS in Eureka,CA, and a member of Humboldt ARC, for standing up a local digital training net:
‘I am using tools formed on this net for our NBEMS net in Humboldt.
Last night we had our first official MODE SHOOT-OUT’
We ran a Mode Shoot-Out last session comparing THOR-22 with MFSK-22. MFSK-22 with a slightly faster word speed and a significantly smaller bandwidth was the clear winner. Shoot-Outs are excellent for comparing modes in similar band condx. They build our mental database of mode characteristics vs band condx, enabling us to more quickly match mode to condx when time is critical. On our horizon is a Mode Shoot-Out comparing MFSK-32/64/128 for image transmission.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex223.txt’, including an ADVANCED Exercise. If you complete the ADVANCED Exercise, send it when NCS calls you for Traffic. CONFIRM 100% copy of the primary file before working the ADVANCED Exercise. Monitoring stations can FILL or CONFIRM Exercise files in the after-net Monitor’s Session.
We relayed for the 20m Digital Net again on Saturday. Joe W7LUX in Flagstaff,AZ was NCS this session. We copy Joe much better than Dave WB0KGN in Le Sueur,MN. We printed the Bulletin and image easily in MFSK-128. The image was pixel perfect. Joe also sent this announcement:
“Due to temporary medical issues involving W7LUX and W7WSV and a summer of Saturday public service and other events, the 20 meter digital net will be suspended until the Saturday after Labor Day (September 18). All participants and other interested operators send an email to Joe, w7lux@arrl.net or Steve, sa_tolnai@mindspring.com, to be reminded of net resumption.”
Our Macro Creation page is progressing. We’ve been busy with the usual summertime homestead chores and family functions. Super-wide VARA signals are still with us.
These stations are usually located around 3000wf. They may be new digital Operators, or lacking panadapters can’t see beyond their dial frequency. In any case, they’re annoying a growing number of stations. The Gateway Sysops have all been considerate and cooperative.

ORCA < WA7HHE, this station is A bit late tonight attended first part if our local club meeting this evening. What can I say, I love the ORCA net.
With cybercrime being so prevalent in the news lately, perhaps the following article might be beneficial to protect oneself and their employer.

NCS < WB7EUX – I kept trying to fetch on the Transmit tab instead of the Receive tab. duhhhh!! Thanks again for the training opportunity. Most stations were weak tonight, 0 to -7db.
Cooler temps this week which made working outside pleasant.
Joseph is in full tourist mode which means we take the back streets to the post office and don’t venture near Main St (highway 82).

Great article in QST this month discussing current propagation and the various layers (D, E, F) and what’s happening to the low bands as we head into the new solar cycle. 160, 80, & 40 meters will become much more difficult and noisy. Perfect weather for digi modes!
Normally I checkin with ke6sls* but tonight I wanted to hone my skills a bit by completely the exercise. I don’t know how long it’s been since I have completed an EX.
I was busy last few Tuesday nights and I really missed the ORCA digi net! Feels good to be back.
I am using tools formed on this net for our NBEMS net in Humboldt. Last night we had our first official MODE SHOOT-OUT
Tnx for the update on the Saturday digital 20m net.
Really cool to hear Lamar ae6lj on digi. He was one of my first contacts as a tech on 2 meters! Hi Lamar
ks6m got clobbered by tuner upper during his traffic round. Bugger that. But cool to know I copied more than NCS tonight with 57% (1,2,3) first round Rough condx 2night but sure a lot of fun. You guys are all amazing.

Looks like long daylight hours are keeping WY, MO, and other far away stations from being able to ck-in, as well as making it more difficult for all of us. VARA QRM is back… too bad.
Reminded myself about pocket knife safety today… got a couple of cuts while inspecting new Swiss Army knife. I thought the saw blade was missing, so opened them all to find. Darn! Band-aids on fingers makes for unhandy typing.
Good to see all on WF tonight. Hope everyone is enjoying Spring WX.
