Wow! 34 stations on tonight’s Roster. Early in the Early-Ck-In phase, we thought the Roster would be light tonight, but we were way off. The FLAMP Exercise again had two ADVANCED Exercises. We can admit to being surprised by how many people worked both ADVANCED Exercises easily. We were thinking it may not be our best idea because it doubles the size of the initial Exercise file 20+ blocks. Most stations completed the Exercise handily. One station dropped with technical issues. So, we’ll continue including Macro Creation Exercises, but probably not every week. Macros are powerful and can be complex. We’ll begin with the simple ones and work our way toward the more powerful TAGS.
ORCA DIGITAL NET and QSTs: We attempted to define how/where QSTs fit with our Training format. We managed to confuse some of those interested in sending QSTs. We’re a bit unsettled too. We’re trying to accommodate Traffic in a Training net. One idea was to accept QSTs in the Comment Round. We didn’t define this well, creating more confusion. We thought those with QSTs would make Comments first and lead into their QST. Now, we’re thinking this idea is adding yet more complexity to and already complex and demanding net.
A larger view of the QST issue should include our closest associate, Western Digital Net. WDN is an actual Traffic Net, meeting every Thursday. WDN’s Roster is heavily weighted with ORCA Ops. WDN distributes pertinent information to net colleagues. Stations with QST articles could conclude their ORCA Comments with a brief description of the QST they intend to file with WDN on Thursday. This would help keep ORCA to reasonable length, give a plug for their QST, and encourage others to ck-into WDN. WDN is the natural platform for QSTs. Give this idea some thought and get back to us. We’re trying to accommodate reasonable expectations w/o degrading our training curriculum.
ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes first-time ck-in, Matt KN6CEI in Blue Lake,CA. It’s good to have him aboard. We see Matt at Humboldt Digital Emergency Net too.
A small group of interested ORCA and SATERN Ops has converged around the demise of SATERN Int’l Digital Net. Their thinking is refreshing. Joe N0LSD in NY spelled it out nicely. Amateur digital training is shifting from a focus on served Agencies to a more fundamental focus. The old paradigm trained Ops to implement agency formats. Nearly every agency has it’s own protocols. Today, we realize that training Ops to work ARES events, for example, is limiting. Good for ARES events, but not so good for ARC or RACES events.
Our training format is definitely fundamental and aligned with today’s reality. Many Civic agencies we’ve traditionally trained to support are losing interest in Amateurs. They’ve developed digital redundancy over the years and some are confident that Amateurs are no longer needed. This is one aspect of the SATERN Net closure. Although it’s becoming a trend, it’s not universal. Many Amateur EMCOMM groups still work closely with their community Emergency Services. ORCA is not constrained by a sanctioning agency. We’re free to choose what to teach and how w/o consulting anyone beyond our membership. Our goal is to provide NBEMS traffic-handling training that enables Ops to work all manner of digital operations with expertise and confidence. We’re focused on our in-house NBEMS traffic-handling software.
Hats Off to Dave W1HKJ, FLDIGI Developer, for a powerful program with ongoing development and support. FLDIGI/NBEMS is Amateur in-house software and it works exceptionally well. Training with NBEMS prepares us to work with all Amateur digital Ops using a common platform. Should any Organization’s back-up-comms fail, they’ll be interested in Amateurs NBEMS support. We’re training for all contingencies, ours and theirs. Train smart, train hard.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex218.txt’, with two ADVANCED Exercises. If you complete an ADVANCED Exercise, send it when NCS calls for your Traffic. CONFIRM 100% copy of the primary file before working an ADVANCED Exercise. Monitoring stations can FILL or CONFIRM Exercise files in the after-net Monitor’s Session.
Adding a Macro Creating Exercise to the FLAMP Exercise seems to resonate, so we’ll continue. Tonight’s Macro Creation Exercise depends on you having entered basic personal information in FLDIGI’s Config/Operator-Station. The TAGS, MYNAME & MYQTH depend on variable information you previously entered under ‘Operator-Station’. If you work the Macro Exercise, Click your Exercise Macro first when NCS call you for Traffic, then send the Advanced Exercise if you worked it.
QSTs and ORCA DIGITAL NET. Many years ago, we welcomed interesting relevant articles in the Traffic Round. Two things changed. The net became busier with more complex training and an increase in participation. Net were exceeding 1.5hr. We stopped accepting QST, QTC, & QRU at Ck-In. At the time, some QSTs and images were 7-9min long.
We’re practicing NBEMS traffic-handling; that’s our primary mission. That said, interesting/useful articles do make a contribution to the net and keep it from becoming all work and no play. Brad WA7HHE really helped keep the net to a reasonable length by summarizing articles and including a URL. His QTCs are interesting and useful, so we continued with his QSTs after revising net protocols.
Now, others wish to send QSTs. No surprise. To accommodate everyone, we’ll take QST articles with your Comments in the Comment Round. As before, please summarize them and include a reference for those interested in the whole article. Please send QSTs in the same transmission as your Comments. This will enable us to share info we think useful to the net w/o extending net time. It leaves the Traffic Round as the FLAMP Exercise conclusion. This is important; it completes the traffic-handling evolution realistically for those working the Exercise. Comment time target is <3min. It’s not absolute; some topics/comments may need a bit more time.
Note: QRU, QTC, & QST are Traffic options. We send ORCA Ck-In protocol frequently at Ck-In.
The 20m Digital Net on Sat AM still needs Relay assistance. If you can help sustain the old SATERN Int’l Digital Training Net, many regular Ops will appreciate your effort.
If you would like email notice when the Net Report is posted, write: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com
Thanks for emailing the ORIGINAL Signal Evaluation images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

Suzanne Simard is a professor of forest ecology at the University of British Columbia. Her own medical journey inspired her recent research into, among other things, the way yew trees communicate chemically with neighboring trees for their mutual defense.
Trees are “social creatures” that communicate with each other in cooperative ways that hold lessons for humans, too, says ecologist Suzanne Simard.
Simard grew up in Canadian forests as a descendant of loggers before becoming a forestry ecologist. She’s now a professor of forest ecology at the University of British Columbia.
Trees are linked to neighboring trees by an underground network of fungi that resembles the neural networks in the brain, she explains. In one study, Simard watched as a Douglas fir that had been injured by insects appeared to send chemical warning signals to a Ponderosa pine growing nearby. The pine tree then produced defense enzymes to protect against the insect.
“This was a breakthrough,” Simard says. The trees were sharing “information that actually is important to the health of the whole forest.”
In addition to warning each other of danger, Simard says that trees have been known to share nutrients at critical times to keep each other healthy. She says the trees in a forest are often linked to each other via an older tree she calls a “mother” or “hub” tree.

My time in NM may be coming to an end. I received word from the radiology supervisor today that COVID vaccination will now be a requirement for employment. There are also a few permanent radiology employees who may be fired for refusal to take the vaccine. I have a contract through July 17th but they may decide to let me go early.
Stay tuned.
There are currently three COVID positive patients in the hospital — all truckers that came down with severe respiratory COVID while on the road and had to stop and come into our ER.
Great training tonight! I didn’t think I could do both the macro and the primary exerccise, but I surprised myself. 73s to all ORCA ops.

We’re thinking two ADVANCED Exercise each week may be too much and we might better intersperse Macro Exercises with the regular file-manipulation Exercises. Your thoughts are welcome here. We’re trying to include as much useful training as possible w/o making things too complex and the nets too long.
Nice work all around on the double ADVANCED Exercise. There’s not much time to work these Exercise during net operations. You are doing exceedingly well and will be assets to every digital net you work. Be patient as we develop Macro Exercises. There’s a few more details to address and a few pitfalls too. One problem, we can’t send Macro TAGS in Text files like ‘Announcements’. They print the variable instead of the TAG. There will be a new Macro learning curve for us.
Yes, Trees communicate, like all living things (-: Bruce KB7VX/P: I wonder how people can be fired for refusing Experimental therapy?
Thanks you for following ORCA Ck-In protocol. We’re all part of the training example we set for incoming digital Ops. < Doug K7KY
Great comments Doug…. gosh… for all the work we all did tonight, we’re making good time.

NCS < WB7EUX – I think you missed me. No worries. Thanks to Mindy and Doug for the challenging exercises tonight. I blew the first attempt at the macro by forgetting to press the ‘Apply’ button and had to do it again.
We had our first ‘hugging’ visit with our nieces, nephews, grand nieces and newphews, and great grand nieces and newphews over the weekend in Boise. It was wonderful and hard to leave them for the return to Joseph. With the exception of the children all of us were vaccinated.

NCS DE KC7MAW I think I was missed too…
First off, the VARA Dudes gave me a break today, first time in 3 weeks !
Second, I didn’t realize that sending a message from FLAMP would actually interupt an ongoing transmission from the Macro. I hit the Macro and immediately hit xmt on Flamp to send the file thinking it would just dump into the xmt que…First in First Out FIFO
NOPE not so. More like Flamp Override and the Macro transmission was truncated.
And that button didn’t become a Red button until the last step, until then it just sat there and looked at me when I clicked.
I am glad I wasn’t ready to call for relays, because I don’t hear much of anybody…maybe 5 or six stations at the most…LOL
The End Fed HW is not high enough…..YET
I will be Googling that Tree story………Reminds of the Rush Classic…..Cool Stuff
