Check-in went well tonight despite the QRM at Net Control. Lately, W1AW CW practice at 3.581.5 has been more of a desense problem then previously. We’ve co-existed with them for years. It’s probably just different band condx. Same for our up-band neighbors at 3.581+2500. They usually don’t desense our radios, but again, condx are different. MFSK-32 usually perseveres thru this noise, and most stations print correctly. VidID seems to suffer the most from these strong signals. It deeply degrades VidIDs. I missed at least one tonight. CW at 500 makes the waterfall look like window blinds, but we can often read VidID thru the blinds. Strong constant signals fade the whole waterfall leaving VidIDs unreadable.

Thanks for helping make ck-In easier for us. We have more stations checking in these days and our Rosters are likely to continue growing. We’re delighted with the increasing interest in digital nets. Amateur digital nets are coming into their own; digital training nets are springing up across the country. The legendary Buckeye Net recently added HF digital. These nets will be vital if the communications infrastructure is disrupted. While training to support Civic agencies, we’re also preparing to support our own radio communities. During the terrible CA/FIRES, we twice stood-up an Emergency net to support radio colleagues at the scene with timely wx/fire updates. Both nets ran for three days, staffed by ORCA net Ops.

Four digital nets meet on 3.581 Monday thru Thursday. 3.581 is the Western USA frequency to find a digital net, a QSO, or someone to experiment with, and the first frequency to check in emergencies. There are five seasoned digital NCS Ops from four digital nets here. There are other net members capable of running a digital net. In emergencies, we have sufficient experienced NCS and digital Operators to sustain extended operations. Thank you for continuing to practice with us. We hope we won’t need our skills for disasters, but if we’re needed, we’re ready. Practice Smart. Practice Often. Configure your digital station to remain on the air w/o commercial power.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcome two new Ops tonight, Lewis W7LEW in Bend,OR and Daniel KD9M in South Elgin,IL. Check tonight’s map. It’s great to have condx permitting ck-in from so far East. Our Roster includes more newer stations these days.

We want to encourage the newer Ops to give the FLAMP Exercise a try. Remember, there’s no need to work the Optional/Advanced Exercise. Ever. The basic exercise entails receiving a brief practice file and Reporting to NCS that you need to fill missing blocks, or that you’ve CONFIRMED perfect copy. That’s it. We send the file three times; first in a mode we think a bit ambitious for band condx. A mode we anticipate some will not copy well. Some stations will need Fill blocks. NCS goes down the roster, sending CALLSIGNs. At your CALLSIGN, send your FLAMP REPORT. It automatically tells NCS which blocks you need, or CONFIRMS 100% copy. We send the file three times in mode increasingly likely to CONFIRM copy. Don’t be concerned about errors; we’re error tolerant. It’s a training/practice net. Others may learn from your experience. You’re among colleagues.

If you work only the primary FLAMP Exercise, you can send QRU in the Traffic Round. If you complete the Advanced Exercise, you’ll have traffic for the Traffic round. You’re welcome to bring a short practice traffic. It should be relative to our interests and operations. We want practice thoroughly and efficiently; practice-file content is secondary to learning traffic-handling routines and conventions.

Our OFDM experiment needed better organization. We weren’t well prepared and it led to some confusion. Next time we experiment after net, we’ll make a quick Roster of who’s here first and follow our usual format for efficiency. The band was not as good as daytime and only Darrell W6ADZ in Reno,NV and Brad WA7HHE in Cedar City,UT CONFIRMED OFDM-500F. Darrell was the only station to CONFIRM OFDM-750F. Other Ops had various amounts of blocks, some needed quite a few. The hour was late and we weren’t there to fill every station. We’re developing a general idea of how the these perform in current condx. Thanks for taking time to participate in the OFDM experiment.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex211.txt’, an FLDIGI/TEXT-EDITOR/FLAMP Exercise.
If you complete the OPTIONAL/ADVANCED Exercise within, send that file to NCS in the Traffic
Round with FLAMP.

Are you LOCKED on net-frequency? Dial and Waterfall?, ‘Close’ doesn’t work for many digital modes.
NCS is LOCKED on net-frequency; you should be too.

MFSK:
‘Tuning must be very accurate, and the software will not tolerate differences between transmit and
receive frequency. The mode was designed for long path HF DX, and due to its great sensitivity is
one of the best for long distance…’, FLDIGI Manual v4.1.15,Ch27p1. When condx are good, and
your station is well tuned, MFSK can decode signals ±15hz off freq.

OFDM:
Requires high frequency-accuracy (±5Hz)
Requires use of RSID(to set frequency accurately)
Requires 4x more TX power than MFSK

Sending and Receiving stations MUST be on the same frequency. Lately, we’ve had a few stations
a little off net-freq. Modes vary in their off-frequency tolerance. Digital stations need to be
closely calibrated. If you’re not copying as well as condx would support, it might help to check
your radio settings and soundcard calibration. Last week, Steve K6ETA posted a list of URLs that
describe various methods for calibrating soundcards. Email NCS for a copy. See: FLDIGI Manual
v4.1.15,Ch3.7

Following our Monitor’s Session directly after net, we’ll experiment again with OFDM-500F & OFDM-
750F, by sending a large file with FLAMP. You need FLDIGI Alpha v4.1.18.17 or .18 to work OFDM:

Although the OFDM modes are designed for large files and excellent band condx, OFDM-500 should
work well for us when 80m condx are solid. We may need modes like this to remain on 3.581 if
ARRL & FCC change the band allocation agreement and only <500hz signals are allowed on 3.581.

OFDM-500F is four-times faster than MFSK-32 (64bps –> 250bps)
OFDM-750F is eight-times faster than MFSK-32 (64bps –> 562bps)

cold, cold, NM wind.

Ever since getting back to work in June of 2020, after five months of no employment due to lockdowns, both in Victorville CA, as well as here; all hospitals where I

have been employed had all but one entrance locked and screening of all persons has been done at these doors, including body temperature and COVID symptom screening.

Once we are screened for the day, we have been given a colored sticker that we must wear on our ID badges, and the color of the sticker changes from day to day. THAT

IS ALL NOW CHANGED.

The number of reported cases of COVID in NM has dramatically dropped, and as of yesterday, all entrances to the hospital have been opened up and no screening is being

done for employees, who have all either taken the COVID vaccine or have been made to sign a declension form. But this is causing a division among health care workers

here.

Those who have declined the vaccine are well known by the administration and to their fellow employees. There have been loud and ugly, sometimes rude, altercations in

the cafeteria and the break rooms. Altercations such as this have been overheard: “You didn’t take the vaccine, so stay 6 feet away from me and don’t sit next to me

any more!!!”

ORCA< K7UV…sri abt hitting QNX button at beginning. I guess I would have been called to give my “Report” and what should one do when they don’t do the advanced

exercise? I was confused during the “Traffic” portiion. Hearing everyone well tonight. We had a bit of rain overnight…just enough to make the car filthy. We’ll take

anything we can get though. Everyone has been s/n in the -2 to +6 dB range. FLDIGI changed modes just fine and 100% copy with all of them. Utah Covid-19 rates have

dropped drastically in the past two weeks and we’re hoping it continues. Thanks to all for making this such a neat net and the high point of my digital week. BTN

I went outside to do evening chores b4 the net and found our 2 geese have a nest with 11 eggs! I distracted them and grabbed 2 eggs We’ve never had goose eggs before.

RE: FLAMP Exercise
Try hanging in there for all 3 modes… we pick 3 (fast to slow) and don’t expect a CONFIRM on the 1st mode. I was surprised to get 3 confirms on the 1st mode. Also we

like to use the exercise to give other stations closer to you an opportunity to relay. If you don’t CONFIRM by the 3rd TX, then pass.

There’s a lot to manage at our end this mode needs 4x the pwr of MFSK so when I switch modes I have to re set pwr it’s very important at our end with two radios

k7ky de K7dv well I got about 1/2 of it the noise started to raise and that is what kills this mode its quite fast but noise here got bad srri I couldnt do better

RR Dave u can only do what the band permits (-: we know from the developer that these modes are not as robust as MFSK and THOR. We’re experimenting w/them because

they will have days when the band is good enough and they will save lots of tx time with major large files we’ll continue using OFDM occasionally to become familiar

with the characteristics and know when and how to useu it < K7KY
