*Stations called for COMMENTS only

Band condx continue to be mysterious. One-way propagation is no longer unusual. Our path to Dave K7DV in Idaho Falls,ID has been strange for weeks. We still usually copy Dave well, but he has difficulty decoding us. With condx like this, it’s hard to tell what’s up when stations don’t respond to NCS. Did the band drop them? Are they also watching TV? Did their station choke? Are they Ck-In with the wrong identifier? All we know is they don’t answer when called. Stuff happens; things occasionally go astray. Whatever the event, it lengthens the net.

The Comment Round made it clear that winter is upon us already. Temps in the mid-teen’s reported from NM to ID. Not the best news with COVID19 infections on the rise.

Please make sure you’re following the ck-in protocol. We intended ck-in to be simple for members and NCS. ORCA’s Roster is more detailed than most nets; it takes more time and steps to compile. We formulated ck-in protocols to enable compiling a detailed Roster with with minimal exchange.

Amateur nets have much in common and they also differ widely. Each net has protocols that define net operations. Net Protocols aren’t just suggestions; they define net operations. We’ve made an effort to present them clearly. If you’re sending QRU at ck-in, please review our Ck-In Protocol. QRU is a valid reply when NCS calls you for Comments and you have no comments (traffic). QRU at ck-in is redundant. We’re a Training net. We practice traffic-handling, but we don’t handle actual traffic (emergencies excepted).

Regular ORCA Ops Ck-In with one of two protocols. ‘CALLSIGN’ Only for stations participating in net activities. ‘CALLSIGN QNX’ for stations Monitoring only. QNX is code for ‘pse excuse me from the net’. You’re checking in and out with a single exchange. QNX stations are not engaged in any net events; they may Monitor or QRT as they please. Stations that ck-in with CALLSIGN Only are Active and engaged in all net activities. It’s important to get this right at Ck-In so we don’t waste net-time calling QRTs.

ORCA is a DIRECTED net, dedicated to learning and developing
digital operating skills and practicing NBEMS traffic handling.
ORCA connects Amateur Operators with common interest in
training, information-sharing, and mutual-aid.
Practice makes perfect!

FLAMP Exercise:
Have FLAMP open. Stay focused.
Exercise is interactive and brisk.

Traffic Round: NCS calls stations in rotation. No
practice traffic? Send ‘QRU’. All traffic is sent
to NCS; only NCS REPORTS/FILLS. NCS will fill
Traffic Round messages after net on request.

Comment Round: RX reports, observations, questions,
comments (keyboard or FLMSG BLANK Form as you like)

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex195.txt’, an FLDIGI/PC-EDITOR/FLAMP
exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in the
Traffic round with FLAMP.

If you’ve joined ORCA just this year, you may wonder why some stations ck-in with an *
after their Callsign. We adopted this protocol to help manage participation in the FLAMP
Exercise. We found that working more than ten stations takes too long and extends net
time beyond 1.5hr. 1.5hr is a long time to remain focused on net flow. We try to keep
the nets between 1 & 1.5hr.

To limit Exercise participation we authorized twelve stations to add an * to their Call
at Ck-In, ‘When they anticipate the Exercise might exceed ten stations’. We chose these
stations for their digital competence and time with ORCA. When we have more than ten for
the Exercise, we’ll ask one or more of these Ops to sit-out. We also skip the * stations
for the Traffic round; they’re only called for Comments. The following stations may
Ck-In with an * when they think the FLAMP Exercise might exceed ten stations:

K6ETA Steve
W7LUX Joe
WA7HHE Brad
KI7TPD Fred
KR7KR Ken
K6QOG Bill
W1EEP Gene
K7DV Dave
KE6SLS Jaye
KA7FOO Doug
KG7VVN Bruno
KB7VX Bruce

These Ops know ORCA practice routines intimately. They don’t mind to skip a practice
session now and then, leaving room for newer stations. There are many other ORCA Ops
with similar knowledge and skill, but twelve has been sufficient to manage the FLAMP
Exercise. Thanks for supporting ORCA DIGITAL NET. It’s your support and participation
that makes the net an effective learning experience.

Remember: Steve K6ETA is looking for NCS volunteers to assist with Western Digital Net.
Steve is selling his house in Petaluma,CA and has removed the antennas he used for WDN.
It’s an opportunity to support to our only west-coast digital Traffic net and learn digital
NCS routines. Steve has organized WDN intuitively; with a little application, you will
soon be conducting nets like a pro.

Thanks for emailing the original Signal Evaluation images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

Seeing lots of wild swings in signal strength. I think the time change pulling us off the gray line might have something to do with it, but I’m just guessing.

Clackamas county (my QTH) is going to have additional COVID restrictions applied soon. In comparison to what is currently in place they are a relatively small change.

My mood has been improved by the good vaccine news. I have friends and family I have not seen in a very long time and I would love to go to the movies.

I am working on learning 3D printing and have ordered a printer from Creality. While putting it together I discovered a small piece missing from the kit. Hopefully

their customer service is good and I can get a new one easily. I don’t even know what the part is called, so if I must buy another i will need to do some research.

73s all around.

David ur S9 +10 7dB. Another good signal report – good guess re signals.
