Although propagation is definitely improving slowly, we expected more support for the FLAMP Exercise modes than was actually available. Tonight was the first time in a long time we needed a fourth round to complete the Exercise. We managed to CONFIRM seven of the nine stations participating. Two stations dropped out early. 28 stations logged in tonight, keeping us hopping during ck-in.

It’s difficult to conjure pithy questions for the FLAMP Exercise every week and we sometimes re-run previous questions. The questions are only included to add realism, simulating editing and forwarding actual traffic. Tonight’s question has been asked twice before, but it’s been a few years. We were again surprised to learn how long some ORCA Ops have held an Amateur Radio License. Tonight’s top number belongs to Steve W7WSV in Mesa,AZ. He’s been an Amateur Radio Op for 66yrs. And, there are quite a few Ops with radio time very close to Steve’s. These guys have deep radio knowledge augmented with extensive experience. We’re honored and enriched to have them aboard.

While this is a fascinating discovery, there’s little actual difference between the on-net performance of all our regular members. ORCA members are an unusual and remarkable group. Some have extensive radio experience; some have advanced technical training and less hands-on time. Both have a mix of training and experience; together, we’re a solid digital team. Five ORCA members run HF digital nets. There may be even more members running VHF digital nets. Together, we’re contributing to the development of efficient protocols and routines for conducting digital nets and processing digital traffic.

If you’re comfortable running Alpha software, install the current Alpha version of FLDIGI and we’ll take the new MFSK-32 & 64 WIDE modes for a spin next Tuesday after net. These new modes are really wide; nearly 2khz. It will be interesting to compare them with the standard MFSK-32 & 64. Alpha 4.1.15.xx supports the new @LOCK: TAG too. This TAG will set LOCK:on after ending transmission.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes first-time ck-in Jeffery KI7DAD in Sugar City,ID. We’re happy to have him aboard and hope he finds ORCA useful. ORCA participation continues to expand. Last year, we limited the FLAMP Exercise to ten stations. It’s a brisk and complex Exercise; the centerpiece of each session. Including more than ten stations makes sessions too long. 1.5hr is a long time to remain alert and focused. 1.5hr is our cutoff time; we endeavor to wrap sooner when we can. You’re welcome to leave at any time; please ck-out with NCS so we don’t waste net-time looking for you.

Remember the HF digital nets run by ORCA members, Steve K6ETA – Western Digital Net, Jaye KE6SLS – Humboldt County Emergency Digital Net, and Dave K7DV – ID ERC Digital Net. We’ve listed their sked numerous time; by now, you probably know them by heart, so we won’t list them tonight. These NCS Ops have supported ORCA for years and we want to support their nets as well.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex193.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLAMP
exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in
the Traffic round with FLAMP.

Remember our dedication to commerce this weekend and set your clocks back.

If it seems we’re sticklers about net protocols and routines, it’s because we’re a
Training Net. Regular practice imprints procedures and routines deeply in our mental
and muscle memory. If we practice sloppy, our imbedded skills will reflect this.
Better we practice correctly and not waste our time. If you learn and incorporate
digital net fundamentals here on ORCA, you will be well poised to work any digital
Traffic or Emergency nets; you will be a net-asset.

Implementing net protocols and routines comes from direct observation of net activities
and reading/comprehending written instructions. Both contribute to learning and imbedding
net routines. Every net begins with a Preamble where NCS presents net protocols and
operations. It’s important to read and understand these instructions. They outline what you
can expect from the net and what the net expects from you. When NCS asks for specific
information at ck-in, that’s all you should send. We’re practicing digital networking and
traffic-handling; reading and following instructions is fundamental to these tasks. Your
participation reflects your understanding of net protocols and conventions.

We’re thinking to add a limited Classified page to the website. COVID19 has changed our
household economy a little. We’re looking for opportunities to reduce ongoing expenses.
And, we have quite a bit of unused radio equipment. We’re considering listing it on a web
page where most visitors are ORCA members. We would have a major advantage over eHam
& QRZ classified; there would be no worries about rip-offs. We would be the only sellers and
ORCA members the most likely buyers. No problem resolving any issues between seller and buyer.
No worries about buyers replacing good parts with bad and returning the item. Anyway, it’s an
OT use of the website and we want to know how you feel about the concept. We’re thinking to
turn some unused gear into funding ORCA expenses. Your thoughts during the Comment Round
are welcome.

Dave W1HKJ has released an Alpha version of FLDIGI, 4.1.15.04. It includes the new
@LOCK:xx|xxx|x TAG and two new WIDE versions of MFSK-32 & 64. They’re really wide!
If you are bold enough to run Alpha versions, install this one and we’ll try the new WIDE

Next, an event that slipped our minds …

Our sincere apology to our members in Independence,MO. We forgot to honor
the passing of their colleague, Larry Trullinger KB0EMB on September 23, 2020.
Larry passed away after a brief illness. A member of ORCA DIGITAL NET, Larry
was instrumental in bringing his digital-radio friends to ORCA. He was a respected

Well,Christmas has arrived early at this QTH, SteppIR Crackup Vertical (80m-2m)going through dry run assembly in my front room. Then just need some warmer weather.

Need a lighter portable antenna for when I go camping. Always fun to check into ORCA and WDN when doing so.

New antenna sounds like fun. A tip for wayward macros…. if u want it to stop… hit ESC button. We learned about this not too long ago and have used it a bunch of times… vy helpful!

NCS < WB7EUX Beautiful and crisp Autumn weather this week and next. Cleaning up leaves and moving around boxes in the barn and garage.

Expanding on the latest Fldigi release, it also has many additional platform optimization including most Raspberry Pi flavors. Dave plans to release same for other members of the Fldigi suite. The greeen bar allows you to set the input level to Fldigi. In my case I adjust the RF gain on the K3S. That said, if AGC is running it appears that nothing happens!

FYI, I have six Raspberry Pi computers running in the shack.

NCS and the net < Just finished three days under a Red Flag Warning. Cool, dry, gusty winds from the northeast — in the SF Bay Area we call them Diablo winds.

Electric utility PG&E provided a lot of warning for a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) on Sunday night, then changed its mind for my neighborhood and our power stayed on. Then last night at 9 pm, out of nowhere, a robocall arrived announcing a PSPS for early this morning. At 10 pm, one hour after the call, the power went off.

One hour isn’t much time to prepare, especially for such things as remembering to release the emergency latch on the garage door so it can be opened without power. All is well so far here in the Bay Area, though Southern Cal is not so fortunate.

Tonight’s Exercise question reveals quite a few radio veterans. No wonder this is such a competent team.

Remember Pre-Tone’s purpose. We Pre-Tone to alert others of our intent to transmit. When NCS calls you, everyone knows you are about to transmit. Pre-Tone is redundant.

If you need to experiment during early ck-in, and you live nearby, it would be kind and thoughtful to move a bit further than 2500wf or work QRP. Stations @ 2500wf frequently desense our radios; it’s disheartening to have our own members working there at net time. Our old FT-857Ds are solid, but not too fancy. We have difficulty with distant stations and VidIDs when there’s strong signals @ 2500.

Brad WA7HHE: I helped build a 4 paperclip element SteppIR antenna a few years ago. It’s a very complex antenna system and took a few days for two of us to build it correctly. We needed a bit of SteppIR tech support too (-:
