*Stations called for COMMENTS only
Tonight was a little unusual; we had better band condx and a large Roster. Thanks for keeping a comfortable pace during Ck-In. We can fall behind quickly when multiple stations call at once. We were distracted by an IL station calling CQ at 1450wf in Olivia 8/500. The TxiD switched our stations to Olivia 8/500 too. One member thought the call came in MFSK-32 @ 1500wf. Because our antennas are different, our log are not always exactly similar. It was confusing and we didn’t have time to sort it out, so we logged the station QNX.
An average ORCA-net Roster usually has a ratio of QNX/Active ck-ins around 3:1 – 4:1. This works well for our Training format. Ten stations are all the FLAMP Exercise can accommodate, in time available. Years ago, we tried to hold the nets to one hour. Today, we strive to complete nets in 1.5hr. It’s a long time for people to remain focused and attentive. If all our nets ran long, we’d soon have much smaller Rosters. It’s late in the evening and a number of members are in different time zones. We’re trying to include as many Ops as possible in effective training and practice.
It’s in everyone’s interest to have Monitoring stations work the FLAMP Exercise silently. More stations are working like this today because the net has grown larger and takes longer. We encourage Ops to work the Exercise as Monitors. Tonight, two regular members ck-ed in QNX, and completed the Exercise silently . When we called for Late Ck-Ins, they Rechecked and asked to send their FLAMP files. Their timing and requests were correct. We were focused on net flow and didn’t immediately follow our protocol.
We encourage people to work the net as Monitors. It extends the practice platform to Monitoring stations, and doesn’t increase our work-load or extend net-time. To better accommodate Monitoring stations, we’ll revise net format. Following Comments from Active stations, we’ll excuse those who wish to ck-out and open the net to Monitoring stations. We’ll take their Comments and fill and CONFIRM their FLAMP Exercise file, and CONFIRM completion of the OPTIONAL Exercise. There may be more stations working the Exercise as Monitors than Active stations; we don’t know. This change will be instructive. We’re interested in your thoughts and suggestion; we’ll see how it goes.
ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes first time Ck-Ins, Joe NU6O/M Eureka,CA, Mobile tonight, Randy K7NOJ in Camas,WA, and possibly Malcolm KC9YCG in Country Club Hills,IL. Malcolm was calling CQ in Olivia 8/500, so we’re not certain he was trying to Ck-In. We recommend new stations ck-in QNX and Monitor a few sessions to learn ORCA net-routines and protocols.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex185.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLAMP exercise.
If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in the Traffic round
with FLAMP.
Plans for a Coast2Coast Exercise are developing. The ORCA/WDN teams are currently busy
with previous commitments. Exercise focus is solidifying; Relay exercises like this are
more the turf of Traffic nets like Western Digital Net. Our Coast2Coast Exercise will be
based at WDN later this month. Your questions, comments, and suggestions are welcome in
the Comment Round. Or, email: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com and Steve WDN/NCS k6eta@comcast.net.
If you email either, please CC the other.
SATERN’s Nationwide Digital Exercise indicated that some digital Ops need more training and
practice manipulating files in the PC file-system. The Exercise required Relay stations to add
audit info to the Responder tab. This entails navigating to the stored file on the HD, opening
it in the appropriate application, editing, saving, and transmitting it to the next station.
These are the core tasks in ORCA’s weekly FLAMP Exercise. If you’ve been working this
Exercise successfully, you’re already familiar with these traffic-handling fundamentals.
If you’re relatively new to working the FLAMP Exercise, please skip the OPTIONAL Exercise
within. Just copy the Exercise file. Work with NCS to complete the file (CONFIRMED). Don’t
work the OPTIONAL Exercise until you can do the primary Exercise easily and reliably. When
you only work the primary Exercise, send QRU in the Traffic Round. The OPTIONAL Exercise is
more challenging. There are a number of tasks to accomplish while retaining focus on net-flow
and your place in Rotation. When initially working the OPTIONAL EXERCISE, and you’ve not
finished before NCS calls you, just send QRU and finish it later. You can send it any session.
If you’ve worked ORCA for a few years, you may wonder what’s become of Doug KA7FOO in Reno,
NV. Doug has been cruising Western USA by RV for some time. He checks in occasionally from the
field. We just heard from him last weekend. He’ll be in Brookings,OR tomorrow and we’ll have
a chance to catch up with him. We’ll give him a warm greeting from his friends and colleagues
at ORCA DIGITAL NET.
Do you have the latest version of the ORCA ck-in Relay Macro? It doesn’t include In&Out or QNX.
Copy @: http://orcadigitalnet.com/macros/
Please email the Signal Evaluation images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com for the Net Report. TU!
Net Report posted soon: http://orcadigitalnet.com/reports/
Whew! That was quite a ck-in… tnx 4 the relays & patience!

Well, it appears we CONFIRMED them all, although some w/o REPORTS good enough to get the msg thru Tnx to Ken KR7KR for the relay… a note to newer Ops part of this exercise is maintaining your focus on the net and ur place in the roster so you can respond to NCS when called thx for your focus and patience tonite big roster and a full 10 Op FLAMP Exercise btn < K7KY
A little activity from the sun seems to be aiding propagation tonight.
PSK-250R did much better than we guessed. THOR 50×1 knocked ’em down like bowling pins! With MFSK-32 for the clean-up.
Nice exercise Doug

An important milestone has come to pass for drone use in government – one that could lead to increased use of the technology by public safety agencies. As reported by GT’s Jed Pressgrove this week, the FAA released a waiver guide for first responder agencies that outlines the parameters within which drones can be flown beyond their operator’s visual line of sight. The exceptions, while understandably few, could help minimize risk to personnel and add to situational awareness during emergencies.

Matt, did ur software output the report? BTU
Before RSID: <<2020-09-02T03:47Z MFSK-32 @ 1500>>
yes, it did. its quickly made software in c#, buyt you just input the signal reports as people are transmitting, and it saves a .txt and you use the <FILE:xx> in fldigi macros and it imports the signal report right into fldigi
pretty cool

Good evening to all, and once again thank you for doing the net – had my fair share of gremlins in the system tonight – but at the very last second, got things up and going, and then fldigi crashed in the middle – but still managed to get the excercise done somehow. We are at 1 active case for COVID-19, with 19 recovered, so glad to see the numbers are still down. Everyone have a great night, and hope to hear you all next week.
Great comments Scott & having issues is a good teacher!
We’re all having issues tonight (or some of us!)

have been overwhelmed by all the doctor stuff, VA stuff. Feeling kind of blue and helpless. Thank god for ham radio, it’s the only place where I still feel like I have some control. .
The smoke rolled back into northern Humboldt yesterday. Nasty layer of ash on the car this morning. looks like we have at least several more days of smoke coming at us.
Wow, big net tonight! Glad I checked in * tonight. Also doing a ham club meeting over the air on our linked repeaters but we are dealing with a ham that continues to jam the link :( Made a back up plan to use my station via a cross band mode.
I NCS the Monday night Humboldt HF emergency net each Monday night at 6:45pm on this frequency. I work ORCA DN on Tuesdays. I try to work the Idaho emergency net on Wednesday, also the WDN on Thursdays, and I TRY to work the Saturn net 20m on Saturdays.
n7qmc is also lurking tonight! he is trying to get FLdigi to work with his interface. Good work om! He needs help with his IC-756pro for my friend. He is not able to transmit yet. If anyone has this rig, can you contact me? ke6sls@arrl.net.

Thanks all, be safe! Hope your air is better than mine :|

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes first time Ck-Ins, Joe NU6O/M Eureka,CA, Mobile tonite, Randy K7NOJ in Camas,WA, and possibly Malcolm KC9YCG in Country Club Hills,IL. Randy was calling CQ @ 1450 in Olivia, so we’re not sure he was trying to Ck-In.
Thanks so much for the orderly Ck-In. You made a large roster easier to compile by waiting until we reply to the current Op b4 calling. It really make a busy Ck-In period easier to manage and we really appreciate it.
I don’t know if you’ll recognize the term, ‘On the Rivet’. It’s an old bicycle roadracing term, from the days when leather racing saddles were riveted together.
Racers at maximum output were said to be ‘On the Rivet’ because maximum output has the rider fully forward on the saddle and the formost rivet. Tonight’s net has kept W7ZAP ON THE RIVET!
We’ve already passed 1.5hr, so we’ll have to pass on Comments from Monitoring stations tonite. Sri…
