*Stations called for COMMENTS only

Tonight was unusual and a breath of fresh air. The band was much better than expected. Rick K0KEX was able to work the entire net from MO; that hasn’t happened in a long time. We also heard from Tim WB8HRO in MI. The band was long, but near-by stations also did well.

The FLAMP Exercise CONFIRMED all seven stations in two passes of THOR-100 & THOR-50×1. We didn’t need MFSK-32. It’s a good sign the next Solar Cycle may be creeping up. Veteran ORCA Ops will remember when we needed few FILLS to complete the FLAMP Exercise. Working through increasingly difficult band condx has helped us develop solid digital traffic-handling skills. We’ve learned a lot about selecting the best mode for band condx. We’ve confirmed the robust dependability of MFSK. Some digital nets are finally replacing PSK-31/Olivia with MFSK-32 as net-mode.

Better band condx and follow-up to the SATERN Nationwide Digital Exercise generated a large Roster tonight; 27 ck-ins. We’re pleased with the interest this Exercise developed. We’ll definitely do an ORCA/WDN version. While we plan and organize the next Exercise, you can begin considering the necessary Relay stations.  In particular, we need digital relay Ops in mid-USA and we should concentrate our initial focus there. We already have four ORCA Ops in KS & MO. They’ve stuck with us through the worst of Solar Minimum. Mid-USA is the logical place for reliable Coast2Coast Relays. I don’t want to put pressure on them to participate, but they’re the Ops we know and a good beginning point. They likely have digital colleagues of their own who may also be interested.

One way to explore the mid-USA possibilities is to specifically look for these stations during ORCA/WDN Ck-In. We may learn more about their relay capabilities and increase their access to ORCA/WDN.

Welcome back to: Lynden KG7SXQ in St George,UT, Keith WA0TJT in Kansas City,MO, and Chris K0PHP in Columbus,MO. Band condx have made ORCA a difficult connect this year.

Remember Western Digital Net on Thursday evening, 0230z/1930p, 3.581+1500, MFSK-32, Steve K6ETA/NCS. Thanks for working with us again this evening. If you’ve been with us for seven years or seven days, you’re on our team. We appreciate your support and participation. New ORCA Ops are learning from your participation. Even the newest member, making a simple error, may help other new Ops learn to avoid that mistake. Along with NBEMS training and practice, we’re learning Amateur digital net conventions and protocols. We’re also learning to type into a hot TX buffer, and work within the PC file system to locate, recall, edit, save, and forward messages. The SATERN Nationwide Digital Exercise has spotlighted the importance of these skills.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex183.txt’, an FLDIGI/PC-EDITOR/FLAMP
exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in the
Traffic round with FLAMP.

The SATERN Nationwide Digital Exercise is history and you may have read Ken AD5XJ’s After
Action Review @: https://qso.com/satern/after_action.html Ken makes a number of important
observations and comments. Doug K7KY mis-read the instructions and added an element of his
own to the Exercise, creating the expectation out West that the West2East message would
be followed by an East2West message. As Ken points out, carefully parsing instructions is
crucial to implementing them correctly.

We also received input from Joe N0LSD, the Exercise target-station in Buffalo,NY. Joe
received eleven messages relayed according to instructions. Wow! That’s a lot more than
we anticipated. So, the AAR map reflects an early point in the Exercise. There was a lot
more activity than we previously thought. How did they know about dead-ends? Some Ops
coordinated relays on NetLogger. This route wouldn’t occur to most ORCA/WDN Ops; they
practice weekly w/o internet support. We’d like to run a similar exercise using only radio.

Joe sent two pages of observations and comments. They will be a big help in developing our
own NBEMS Coast2Coast Exercise. Here’s two of his comments:

“People continued to try to get messages through, at times coming back an hour or a day
or two later to try again. That demonstrates perseverance.

Participants that perhaps didn’t have as much experience in *sending* message traffic
and experienced problems were willing to spend the time and take direction from more
experienced operators in order to rectify the problem. In every instance where this was
the situation, we were able to successfully get the traffic past that station through
troubleshooting, in order to correct the problem. As I remember, most instances where
this occurred were software configuration issues.” Joe N0LSD

If you participated in the Exercise, we’d appreciate hearing about your experience during
Comments tonight. And/or your thoughts on running a similar Exercise from the West Coast.

Email the Signal Evaluation images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com for the Net Report. Thank you!

Another beautiful day here today. Marine layer again helped curb too much heat. High today of 77F, low 56F, currently 67F and very comfortable.

Plans are nearing for our repeater upgrade. All parts are now ready for City to install the base and we can move the machine.

Plans also coming together for my antenna upgrades. Can hardly wait to get a better antenna up for 75/80M!

Talking w/w6koz and he mentioned saving frequencies for local repeaters & simplex frequencies. They are saved in CVS format, and just so happens to work VERY WELL with FLdigi! The program is called CHIRP, which programs newer radios with computer.

THOR100 takes a LOT of BW, we were right on the edge of W1AW CW practice :)

Is passing traffic Coast2Coast using only NBEMS software and P2P relays an achievable and useful goal? In 1 sentence, WhyYes/WhyNo? Yes,this is one more tool we can use to help our fellow citizens.

KJ6UPE has been spewing profanities over our linked repeater system for the last hour. Was hard to participate and also hear that. I recorded much of it to forward off to the FCC, AGAIN :(

Great net tonight, despite the local QRM. TU all, be safe, and keep up the good work.

Again, love seeing those signal reports.

My signal report isn’t complete due to the “QRM” on our system and having to get my recorder up and running.. Sri
