80m was a pleasant surprise tonight. We had fairly good communications as far out as Idaho. Beyond Idaho and New Mexico, we heard no one. Mindy W7ZAP CONFIRMED eight stations in the FLAMP Exercise rather easily. Beginning in PSK63-RC5, the Exercise wrapped with MFSK-32. David KG7FGT relayed the 2nd round in MFSK-64 and Mindy wrapped the Exercise with MFSK-32.

We missed the Cedar City,UT stations tonight; they were occupied with Rainbow Canyon ARC’s on-air monthly meeting. Ken KR7KR was multitasking and checked in QNX. We ran well overtime tonight; that’s unusual with a light Roster. I made a number of small errors that added up to lengthy delays. Normally, I don’t follow off-freq signals. The net is where you find NCS. After leaving 1500 to print a signal, I forgot to return the cursor to 1500 and didn’t copy the following station. Small glitches can compound, resulting in a longer than usual net. We usually operate quite smoothly, but not always. Stuff happens. It’s actually useful NCS training. I’ve become more flexible and less easily rattled by surprises and deviations.

We’re excited about the upcoming NBEMS across America Exercise proposed by Ken Standard AD5XJ, SATERN International DigiNet/NCS. We’ll be generating and relaying FLMSG traffic for relay to the East Coast by individual Operators across America. We’ll also be receiving traffic generated on the East Coast and relayed to us. We’ll use the NBEMS suite exclusively to send FLMSG-Form traffic in FLAMP via individual relay stations, efficiently and accurately, Coast to Coast.

To stay current with the development of this Exercise, check into the SATERN Int’l DigiNet. They meet every Saturday AM, 1700z, 14.065, Olivia 16-1000, Ken AD5XJ/NCS. Information about NBEMS across America will be in the weekly Training Bulletin. SATERN is a good net for ORCA/WDN Ops to work. Daytime 20m is a different radio experience than nighttime 80m. Ken usually begins early ck-in around 1500z. Ken runs SATERN from his home in Jackson,MS via a remote station in Texas. If you don’t copy him well, be patient. He usually sends traffic and images multiple times with different beam headings. He also fills stations missing <5 blocks. After closing SATERN, Ken has relay stations that repeat the Bulletin and images after the net. You may recognize his relay stations, both check into ORCA: Dave WB0KGN in Le Sueur,MN and Joe W7LUX in Flagstaff,AZ. We’ll likely be working with these two Op for NBEMS across America.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex178.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLAMP
Exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in
the Traffic Round with FLAMP.

Before each FLAMP Exercise, we send the three Modes we’ll be using. With this information
you should be prepared to set mode manually should FLDIGI miss the RSID signal. You can
also be prepared to relay in these modes by pre-locating them in the ‘Op Mode’ menu.

HF Digital News: Ken AD5XJ, SATERN Int’l DigiNet/NCS, proposes an HF Digital exercise using
NBEMS on HF to pass traffic Coast to Coast by relay. He’s asked for our involvement on the
West Coast. The exercise simulates a major loss of internet and proposes to pass digital traffic
by relay using only NBEMS software. It’s an opportunity to practice moving traffic across the
Country by HF relay and get acquainted with digital colleagues who can help us move traffic by
relay. We will be generating and forwarding messages composed in FLMSG. The messages need
to arrive exactly as sent. This looks to be an interesting and useful exercise.

Bruce KB7VX is having even more adversity than his Hospital Employer issuing him one COVID19
mask per week and restricting him from bringing his own. His truck engine has failed. Instead
of driving to a quiet desert campsite after a ten hour day, he’s stuck in a noisy autoshop parking
lot next to the freeway, waiting for a new engine, and riding his bike to work in a heat wave. Will
he be able to maintain his legendary big-signal-from-the-field at the autoshop? We’ll see. Keep
Bruce in your thoughts and prayers.

I hope you all can get this message 100%. It is essential in that we strive to learn methods that enable us as hams to join an effort to provide emergency communication in a catastrophic event – like the Internet becoming unavailable.

Think it won’t happen? I would remind you of Hurricane Katrina. Half of Louisiana was without Internet service for almost two weeks. Even the Federal Government could not communicate because of flooded communication equipment. It CAN and does happen. What if a rogue nation like China or Russia were to launch a cyber attack on our Internet backbone? Where would we be then.

In that vein, we are planning an exercise that will both test your skills learned here, and (hopefully) give you a chance to develop new skills.

Most of you have received our weekly training messages and many of you report back to me with your results. Quite a few of you have followed our instructions to the letter. Others do the bare minimum.

In an emergency, there are not that many options. We must know and perform our role without error. Getting a message from the originator to the destination requires adherence to the best of radio practice, and to all the principals we have been teaching for quite a while now.

In the coming weeks, we will lay out a plan for a nationwide exercise to get a message from one side of the country to the other using only radio…no Internet, no WinLINK, no CW – just NBEMS. A message sent by radio from the originating station should reach the destination station absolutely error-free and in the same format as it started. Notice I said SHOULD. There are several mitigating factors on that journey between coasts.

That means, no cut and paste, no text conversions, no PDF’s – just the FLMSG raw text sent stations-to-station with FLAMP or FLMSG/ARQ peer-to peer from end to end.

Can we do it? Absolutely we can. But it means uncompromising adherence to the guidelines we have stressed on this net for a long time. If you are unfamiliar with NBEMS procedures used by SATERN, visit the satern.org web site and review the NBEMS training pages. Practice with a ham friend. Or set up a practice session with your local digital net.

My Father and Sister mentioned to me one day in 2011 that they both had amateur radio licenses and could contact each other on battery power even though she’s over 100 miles away. The initial test image I received was perfect, for the first time since I have joined the net. That was pretty cool IMO. Glad to have the opportunity to do the FLAMP relay tonight. Skill building is good.

Reuters reports that CDC has stated mask use could get the pandemic under control in 4-8 weeks. I am unsure of how likely it is that this goal will be met. My wife works in retail and has been insulted by customers that were told that masks were mandatory if they wanted to shop.

On a more positive note I have a verbal agreement with a painting contractor to get the exterior of my house painted, although not until September. I’m also getting an early start on preparing for Winter since I no longer have to commute to work. The wood shed is beginning to fill up nicely. A La Nina winter has been predicted for this year, so it is likely that I will see a good deal of it used. Taking online classes so far has been a good way to spend some time as well. I know a lot more about Elasticsearch than I used to.

Carl km6liq came over yesterday afternoon to weed eat and mow my lawn. What he didn’t know was I was making an amazing pot of CHILI! I add tons of great veggies to my chili, so it’s almost a chili stew. Carl ate 2 meals worth! Glad I got some REAL food into his belly.

As most of you already know, California is again in LOCK DOWN mode. COVID19 is really distressing our world. However, I am almost glad the Governor made the call. I hope this can save lives!

Wow, my noise reduction was turned on (my goof!) and it seen Mindy’s first transmission as pure noise and nulled it out!

My fumbling fingers sure getting worse. It’s becoming REALLY hard to try to log signal reports. But I will keep working at it. Good work NCSs.

What got Jaye, and his xwife Pat into ham radio was after we bought are small RV. We planned to do lots of camping in the mountains. Always thinking about WHAT IF, we decided to buy a cell phone in case of troubles, but were told they don’t work in the mountains! The guy worked at Radio Shack as was a ham. He said what you really need is ham radio. The rest is history!

Sure great to hear almost all the ORCA ops tonight. Band is wonderful!

20+ years ago, I remember watching Doug have a digital QSO w/an Op in Chile on his Yaesu FT-817 using 5w! The amount of energy to light a bulb and he was communicating with someone halfway around the world thru the air… Amazing!! 9/11 occurred and I got my technician license.

The few readable TX are running @ -7 dB to -13 dB. Repeating Ken’s message from SATERN (Salvation Army) is excellent.
