Anticipating tough band condx tonight, Mindy W7ZAP chose robust modes for the FLAMP Exercise. Having all stations CONFIRM the first pass in MFSK-64 still surprised us. Seven out of eight stations actually; we couldn’t connect with Dave K7DV in Idaho Falls,ID. Dave and Gene W1EEP are our most distant Active members. Long summer days coupled with Daylight Saving Time make ORCA difficult for them.
Here’s a couple things you can do (if you’re not already) to make net management easier for us. Always send your CALLSIGN in CAPS so it stands out from background noise. The band has been particularly noisy lately. The other thing is macros. Macros that send text, like ck-in macros, should begin with a blank line. This forces a line-feed and FLDIGI starts printing on a new line, separating it from noise and making it much easier to read.
If you’re using ORCA macros from our website, please reload them or add a blank first line to your current text macros. See: http://orcadigitalnet.com/macros/
We were really touched by a Comment from David AE7LM in Hailey,ID, one of our newer members. He said, “I am in awe of how everyone on this net cares for each other. We really need that.” It’s certainly true. ORCA is more than a Traffic-Training net today. We’ve become a close group of radio colleagues, engaged and bonded more deeply than our mission statement implies. We appreciate your friendship and support.
A few years ago, I had an accident in the shop that severely injured my right hand, resulting eventually in the partial amputation of my middle finger. It was a slow recovery with the amputation coming three months after the accident. Mindy then ran the FLAMP Exercise, but had not run the whole net. Dave K7DV, ID ERC NCS, jumped in and ran ORCA for us the next two weeks until Mindy took over the whole net and ran it alone until my hand healed enough to begin typing training. It was a difficult half a year made more endurable by the support of our ORCA friends. We’ll never forget their support and encouragement during that event.
Remember these digital nets and support them when you can. Their Net Control Stations put a lot of time and energy into sustaining them. All but one are current ORCA Ops too:
Monday, Humboldt Digital Emergency Net, 0145z/1845p, 3.581+1500, MFSK-32, Jaye KE6SLS/NCS
Tuesday, ORCA DIGITAL NET, 0330z/1930p, 3.581+1500, MFSK-32, Doug K7KY & Mindy W7ZAP /NCS
Wednesday, ID ERC Digital NET, 0300z/1900p?, 3.581_1500, mode flexible, Dave K7DV/NCS
Thursday, Western Digital Net, 0330z/1930p, 3.581+1500, MFSK-32, Steve K6ETA/NCS
Saturday, SATERN Int’l DigiNet, 1700z,1000p, 14.065+1500, Olivia 16-1K, Ken AD5XJ/NCS
In particular, remember Western Digital Net, developed by an ORCA member and populated with many ORCA members. WDN is our natural partner and counterpart. Steve founded WDN; we are WDN’s family. It’s a good place to begin learning portions of the NCS role. Currently, we would find our selves lacking for Net Control Stations should we be called to an ongoing emergency. Whatever you learn about NCS duties will be useful to you, emergency or not.

Keep our radio colleagues in your thoughts and prayers. In particular, Jaye KE6SLS is dealing with a worksite injury that’s left him in serious pain. He’s having trademark difficulties with Workman Compensation. Bruce KB7VX is working a new hospital assignment where he’s expected to engage closely with patients using one protective mask per week. A safety condition that should be revealed at the outset of the assignment. Touching the exterior of a mask while removing it can contaminate you.
Thanks for working with us again tonight. The net ran very well; thanks for your concentration and focus. Let’s do it again next Tuesday evening.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex176.txt’, an FLDIGI/PC-EDITOR/FLAMP
Exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in the
Traffic Round with FLAMP.
Our field radio station is a small LOOK cargo trailer. We planned to have a bug screen
made for one side of the cargo doors, but FD arrived before the screen. It would have
been very helpful for mosquitoes and biting flies, but it wouldn’t have helped much
with the heat. Afternoon sun sent me back down the hill until evening. QRP was not
in the cards and I brought up the Amp. Digital contacts were easy on 20m, psk-31.
CW also easy on 15/20m daytime, and 20/40/80m evening. The 135′ doublet didn’t tune
well on 160m. My first FD-2020 contact was our neighbor, Scott W7SOT; my only known
contact all weekend. Most Field Days, I don’t contact anyone I already know.
The FLAMP OPTIONAL Exercise tonight is about Field Day. We would also like to hear
about your FD weekend in the Comment Round.
Before each FLAMP Exercise, we send the modes we’ll be using. We want to fill missing
blocks by relay when we can. You have foreknowledge of upcoming modes. Be prepared to
relay one of these modes by locating them in advance.
In April, we opened the Comment Round to COVID-19, an issue that effects nearly
everyone today. The virus is still active and re-surging in many places. COVID-19
information and observations are welcome during Comments.

Radio-wise Field Day was a bust for me. I took my HT up Zigzag mountain and made not a single contact. When I got home I was too tired and hungry to play radio. The
hike itself was very nice though. There was a very good view of Hood just before the summit and the air was clear enough that I could even see the ski lifts.
Hopefully by the next field day I will have selected a field radio and have an OH8STN-inspired mobile station set up.
Oregon’s governor has stated that a return to lockdown may be needed. I hope this is not necessary, but I am not optimistic. I am seeing lots of people not wearing
masks or social distancing.
I read earlier that the Chinese government is giving their army a COVID vaccine. I do not know how safe or effective it is.
I hope everyone on this net continues to stay safe and healthy. KG7FGT Back to net.

kg7vvn,
Have had all sunny weather last week. Lots of wind here as well.
A lot has happened since my last ORCA net. I did turn on the HF rig for about 2 hours for FD2020. I tried to work some signals on 20M phone about 9:30pm. Later
headed down to 40m and worked 6 stations SSB. Switched to digital and worked about 12 pks31 stations. Then headed down to 80m digi, but don’t think I worked any
stations. So I switched to 75m phone and worked a few great stations–was a much mellower expereince than past FD’s! I worked 1E SF.
Friends have been helping me empty out my tool trailer. Will be selling off all tools, trailer, and my work truck over the coming weeks. Today they did some work
making the gear look good with a little paint and some elbow greese. Lucky to have such good friends.
Tomorrow I start posting the stuff on Craigs list. Hopefully all goes well and fairly quickly.
COVID cases continue to rise here in Humboldt
Until next time, hang in there, and stay well.

For me, every day is Field Day. I am currently camped out on the Mojave Desert, 14 miles north of Victorville, CA; been living out here all week with the fire ants,
jackrabbits, and coyotes. I am just north of Bell Mountain on a wide plain with good angles of radiation in almost all directions except for Bell Mountain, which rises
about 1000 feet from the desert floor about a mile south of my location. The elevation in Victorville is listed as 2715 feet, but I am somewhat higher, maybe 3000
feet.
Working now at St. Mary High Desert Imaging and will be here for the next 12 weeks. Having contact with large numbers of patients from all age groups. Everyone wears a
mask to enter the Imaging Center, but I am very close to all of my patients in ultrasound, but always wearing gloves and a mask. However, the policy here is that each
employee only gets one mask per weeek. .
This will be a test to see if I get COVID-19.

NCS < K6ETA Howdy to all on the Net!
Field Day was a gas… 7 of us practiced social distancing in the 54 degree windy fog above Inverness, CA and using K6ETA 2B SF, contacted 37 states and 6 DX countries
over simple dipole antennas about 55 feet up in the pines. We wiped down mics and CW keys incessantly.
The noise was so low most stations we worked weren’t even tickling the S meter. We may have gotten a ranger who checked up on us into the hobby… time will tell. He
was glad to see our social distancing efforts.
Photos are up at http://k6eta.com/field-day
Glad Jaye is doing OK. Hang in there Bruce!

Just to clarify. I tried using mu own masks but was told that is not ALLOWED. I can ONLY use the one THEY PROVIDE and NONE other. I tried asking for a new mask each
day and was told that the supply is too low, have to use it all week.
Also, having same glitch with FLDIGI, unable to turn off TXID. Please advise.
K7KY de KB7VX
We’ll have to think abt the RSID glitch abt the masks, it would seem u could void your contract with inadequate safety equipment available and unanbe to use ur own
it also seems right they would have advised u of this condx b4 coming best wishes for a good solution BK are there any qustions or follow up comments from
