Will the sun ever wake up? Another evening of difficult band condx. Thanks for continuing to work with us in trying times. We always look forward to Tuesday evening, learning and practicing with like-minded radio friends. Thanks for your patience and persistance. Band condx should eventually improve. When the 11yr Solar Cycle returns, we’ll remember these days as the forge that helped hone our digital skills.

Tonight we had two Vancouver,WA stations participating.  Charles W5CLE and Brian KJ7BHK have been monitoring ORCA for awhile. Both participated tonight with great results. From our perspecive as NCS, the value of monitoring long enough to learn ORCA routines is crystal clear.  Those that jump right in with minimal exposeure often have difficulty with the FLAMP Exercise. That’s no surprise; the Exercise is complex, interactive, and brisk. You’ll know when your ready to participate.

In early 2013, ORCA was a VHF net teaching basic FLDIGI/FLMSG operations. NCS resolved newbie issues on-the-air; where is the TX button? How to slave FLMSG to FLDIGI? A sizable portion of the net used acoustically coupled HH radios that stations 30m distant couldn’t copy. It was tedious and frustrating. Today, stations that join ORCA usually have a working knowledge of NBEMS fundamentals. ORCA is complex and brisk; we don’t have time to teach fundamentals on-the-air. Monitoring is the fast-track to understanding and working ORCA.  Monitor enough sessions to learn ORCA conventions and routines, then ck-in Active and participate. Newbies will make a few mistakes in the process; that’s expected. We’re a Training and Practice net. We routinely work with new Ops by email and phone.

Welcome back to Dan W7WVF in Bandon,OR. Dan is a busy radio guy; he’s the ARES District 5 Emergency Coordinator, responsible for the five southern Oregon Counties. He’s in good company on ORCA; we host a number of ARES and other Amateur radio Officials. All are excellent radio Operators.

Are you a regular QNX ck-in? QNX ck-ins are Welcome. If you’re Monitoring to learn net operations before engaging, we welcome your questions and observations. Time permitting, we call for Monitoring stations after the Active-station Comment Round. Now, we’re asking you for a little support. We’d like monitoring stations to also send us the opening/closing Test image for the Net Report.  These images give a graphic indication of band condx during the net and reflect the paths between net stations. They add valuable content to Net Reports, useful to all ORCA Operators.

Please send the actual Test images, not screen captures. FLDIGI saves images in ~/urname/FL_APPS/fldigi.files/images/.  Email images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

Thanks for working with us tonight. We appreciate your support and hope to see you again next Tuesday evening for another ORCA session. Remember the ID ERC Digital Net Wednesday evening, and Western Digital Net on Thursday evening. Both nets on 3.581. If you’re looking for a digital chat or maybe a litte practice or troubleshooting, 3.581 is a likely place to find a digital colleague.

OOps! Getting ahead of myself!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex175.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLAMP
Exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in
the Traffic Round with FLAMP.

ORCA DIGITAL NET today is organized around interests we have in common.
We realized that our interest in providing opportunities to learn the digital NCS
role isn’t resonating with the interests of the net. Running a different agenda
every three weeks is not ideal scheduling either. Thanks for your patience.

Tonight, we’ll cancel the ‘every third session’ idea and return to running the net as
before. Opportunities to learn digital NCS are wide open on Western Digital Net; Steve
K6ETA/NCS is seeking Operators interested in learning the NCS role and supporting
WDN as Alternate NCS. At WDN, you can learn the role in small easy steps.

Did you work the FEMA Region X Interoperability Net last Wednesday? We tried, but no
joy. 60m was very noisy and we weren’t heard at 100w. Digital copy was difficult too
and we didn’t complete the messages in PSK-31 or MT63-2000L. It’s hard to guess why
FEMA isn’t experimenting with more suitable traffic-handling modes. PSK-31 is basically
a QSO mode; neither mode has Forward Error Correction.

Email from Wayne Robertson, K4WK, Red Cross Amateur Coordinator, indicate the RC
is very pleased with the RC/Amateur EMCOMM Exercise on 30may20. More than 1000
Amateurs signed up and participated. They’re planning for another EMCOMM Exercise
this Fall.

In April, we opened the Comment Round to COVID-19, an issue that effects nearly
everyone today. The virus is still active; it appears to be re-surging. COVID-19 info
and observations are welcome among radio-related topics during Comments.

Thanks for sending Test images for the Net Report: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

ORCA < WA7HHE, Learned that ORCA net member KR7KR Ken, while headed into the mountain for some camping and blew his radiator, have been attempting to contact him,

Hope Ken gets back home OK.

A comment to all stations who check-in QNX week after week: Watching the net is definitely useful for a few weeks, but you will learn a lot more if you participate. If

you get in over your head, responding QRU during Traffic or Comments always works to take a step back on that round.

Also, Doug and Mindy are very helpful and gracious and it’s OK to say “I’m not sure what to do next”.

This is, after all, a training net and the worst that can happen is the net goes a bit long. I think Dug and Mindy would agree that it’s worth it if that helps

stations learn!

Practice makes perfect! =)

Great to see so many monitoring stations out here either way!

Regarding 2020 Field Day I will be operating all day Saturday on Inverness Ridge above Pt Reyes, West Marin County. You can see my FD station at

DE KJ7BHK

I want to express my appreciation to the ORCA DIGITAL NET for these training opportunites and the NCS forbearance with newbies on the net. I am a relatively new Ham

with limited exposure to digital comms and HF in general. ORCA DIGITAL NET has been a wonderful experience to watch the pros and get some coaching along the way. I

have been meeting with a couple friends on a local 2m FLDIGI practice net which makes a whale, parden the pun, of a lot of difference in understanding the processes

and protocols you ORCA guys are using. Unfortunately, I am a very slow typist and my responses tend to be slow and labored but I try, :-). Keep up the good work and

thank you for your patience as some of us manage new skills.

KJ7BHK, BTN

We like the pun! And excellent job… even ck-in was a bit rough 4 me tonight. Your signal came way up during the net. S9 +10 and 8dB. Not sure what the band is doing,

but its on the change!
Thanks for hanging in there.

Even with tough condx, we did well with MFSK in the FLAMP Exercise. Good to have two Active stations in Vancouver,WA now, Charles W5ClE and Brian KJ7GHK. They’re good

examples for monitoring ORCA until you catch the routines and then jump in Active!

I made a mistake in the FLAMP Exercise text tonight. It should have instructed you to send the new file to Mindy W7ZAP.

Jaye KE6SLS in Eureka,CA is having a very difficult time with Workman’s Comp since he was injured @ work last year. He’s still in a lot of pain. Keep Jaye in your

thoughts and prayers.

And, Hat’s Off to Charles W5CLE and Brian KJ7BHK for typing into the hot transmitter. It’s better to type slowly and sometimes inaccurately than type into the buffer

while we wait. we can usually parse errors. We’re radio Ops! if we don’t understand, we’ll ask good work! btn < K7KY

Good comments Doug. Tnx… and yes, keeping Jaye in our thoughts and prayers.

< K7KY I want to underscore Steve K6ETA’s comments abt ck-ing in QNX of course all are welcome to ck-in like that our intention was to enable people to begin

working the net simply while they learned the traffic-handling routines we practice here… good to see our Vancouver friends worked our system well. we are patient,
