*Only called for COMMENTS

The Test images (below) give a good indication of tonight’s band condx. Lot’s of fading. Despite difficult condx, the net went well. Fred KI7TPD has been relayed in QNX lately; that’s unusual. We’ve learned his HOA noticed his antenna and required it’s removal. Rats! I hope Fred can wrap some thin wire around the eves and get back on the air. When bad things happen to good people, we believe there’s at least one pearl somewhere in the debris. Maybe City Officials will come to his aid.

Another reminder for new ORCA Ops. Work only the main FLAMP Exercise until you’re comfortable and can complete it reliably. Only then should you work the OPTIONAL Exercise. You need to REPORT to NCS when called and CONFIRM 100% reception of the file. That’s the basic Exercise.

The OPTIONAL Exercise may have you working with the PC File Manager and Editor to complete the task. It’s a lot to do while retaining focus on the net and your place in the Roster. The OPTIONAL Exercise creates traffic for the Traffic Round. If you skip the OPTIONAL Exercise, send QRU in the Traffic Round.

We hope to engage you in some simple tasks that will lead to NCS skills and competency. NCS is a role more easily learned in modules. Ck-In is an event you can begin learning at home w/o engaging NCS. We’d like you to take ck-in along with us each session. Just keep your own log as we run ck-in and self-check your results against our Roster. It’s an easy exercise and you’ll soon be comfortable building a Roster. Building the Roster is a component of the ck-in routine. Just copy our reply to each ck-in and paste it into an FLMSG Blank form. You’ll know when you’re good at it. Do this until you can compile the Roster w/o losing focus on net flow. It can be fun; we did this for years to learn NCS routines and become more familiar with net members, relay staions, and NCS Operators.

A second activity that will help prepare you for HF digital NCS duties is running the Comment Round as NCS. We’ll be looking for volunteers to NCS the Comment Round. We will turn the net over to you for the Comment Round and you will return net control to us when you’re finished.

It seems changes to the Comment Round have been confusing. While we enjoyed watching you manage the Comment Round yourselves, we missed the opportunity to reply to your comments. We proposed having you manage every third session, leaving the other two for us. We’ll each conduct a Comment Round and leave every third session to your management. If we have a volunteer, that Op will conduct the Comment Round. If no volunteer, you will all manage the Round by handing it off to the next Active Op. This activity is fundamental to Directed Nets and will help prepare you to run a full net someday. You’re learning the NCS role in portions. Better to learn these skills now, among colleagues, without pressure, than the time NCS falls to you by surprise.

You can learn a lot more than digital traffic-handling on ORCA. Many members give excellent reception reports during the Comment round. You can learn something about the path between stations and your path to NCS. More path information is revealed during the FLAMP Exercise when NCS calls for REPORTS. You can see how each Active station is copying NCS in different modes. Radio intelligence is where you find it.

We urge you to begin learning NCS routines and skills. Western Digital Net has need of you. You can begin easily here on ORCA. Soon, you can be an alternate NCS for Steve K6ETA on WDN. Who knows, ORCA may need your assistance some day. It’s happened before; when I blew up my right hand, Dave K7DV took over ORCA and ran two weeks while we were preoccupied. Mindy had only run the FLAMP Exercise at that time and directly took over ORCA. It was some time before I could begin to relearn typing. Anyway, remember the WESTERN DIGITAL NET on Thursday with Steve K6ETA/NCS, same sked and mode as ORCA.

Thanks for working with us tonight. We look forward to working with you again next Tuesday.

ANNOUNCEMENTS 05/May/2020

Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex168.txt’, an FLDIGI/PC-EDITOR/FLAMP
Exercise. CONFIRM ‘ex168.txt’ before working the OPTIONAL Exercise. If you complete
the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in the Traffic Round with FLAMP.

Last week, a QSO on 3.581 kept us from taking Early Ck-In until nearly 1900p. Twelve
minutes after the Preamble, we were still working ck-in. For a large roster like this, we
need about 45min of Early Ck-In. QSO’s on net freq can be a good thing, if one person
is an ORCA Op. You can release the freq to NCS around 1845/0145z, enabling us to begin
Early Ck-In. We never know how big the Roster will be. It’s good to have a little margin.
You can help hold the frequency until NCS begins Early Ck-In. TU

Ck-In was also slowed by doubles and coattails. VidID is useful up to a point of saturation.
We can only process one station at a time, VidID or regular text. Band condx are another
limiting factor; a factor we can mitigate by improving our skills, stratigies, and tactics.

Participating in the Red Cross Communications Exercise this month should be easier soon.
Currently, we have to create the ARC 213 form in FLMSG before sending with Winlink. Tom
KF7RSF in Bandon,OR has ported the ARC 213 Custom form to Winlink and submitted it for
approval. When approved, we can complete the form in Winlink, aleviating the need for FLMSG.

As you know, Steve K6ETA is seeking guest NCS Ops for Western Digital Net. This should
sound familiar to most of you; we’ve been trying to interest you in learning the NCS role
for a couple years. WDN aside, there is good reason to sieze this opportunity. Many of you
have been working ORCA for years. You’re certainly qualified; you’re quite familiar with
efficient digital net operations. A few new skills will make you comfortable with running
digital nets.

Here are two activities that will put you on the path to NCS competency. First, a task we’ve
recommended before; shadowing NCS at ck-in by creating your own roster. When we reply to a
ck-in, copy that text and paste it into a FLMSG Blank Form. Check your work against our Roster.
This will help prepare you to run digital VHF/HF ck-ins yourself.

The second activity on your way to NCS skills will be running the Comment Round. Currently,
every third session, you manage the Comment Round yourselves by handing off to the next
station on the Roster. We’d like you to volunteer to NCS a Comment Round yourself by
calling each station in order, as we usually do. These two NCS tasks are easy to do and
will ease you into NCS duties sequentially. We think you’ll enjoy building your digital
skills. You are the digital Operators most capable of supporting WDN with Guest NCS
and standing up an inpromptu net in emergencies. Steve has conceived and implemented
an outstanding digital Traffic net; he’ll appreciate our continuing participation and NCS
support.

Please email the Test images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com for the Net Report. Thank you!

Scientists have identified a new strain of the coronavirus that has become dominant worldwide and appears to be more contagious than the versions that spread in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a new study led by scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Some OR state parks will be opening soon, which means some of the National Forest trailheads probably will be too soon. Hopefully this is a sign that things are starting to improve.

I am hearing reports of meat shortages. I expect members of this net are likely to be stocked up. With that said I hope it turns out to be a non-event.

I have also heard that it is likely that COVID19 was in the US & Europe last year. This Winter a friend developed viral pneumonia after a visit to the UK. We wonder if he had it. He has fully recovered.

Still staying busy and healthy. I hope you all do the same. Glad to have this opportunity to practice with FLDIGI.

About the FLAMP Exercise Contestia ….. (uses) 6bit decimal character set rather than 7bit ASCII set that Olivia does. Therefore, it has a reduced character set anddoes not print out in both upper and lower case (like RTTY). Some traffic nets might not want to use this mode because it does not support upper and lower case characters and extended characters found in many documents and messages … FLDIGI Manual 4.1.0

We’d planned to manage the Comment round ourselves for a session each and let the net manage every third session. This sked may be confusing; we would now like to ask for a volunteer to manage Comments every third session. If no volunteer, we’ll stick with each station handing to the next. Every third session…. Doug K7KY

Thanks Doug. That was a useful exercise :-) and good info on CONTESTIA.
