ORCA sessions are getting larger these days and we’re taking Early Ck-Ins even earlier. Thanks for making ck-in orderly. Giving us time to reply to the previous station is a big help. We’re copying and pasting data between two programs to build the Roster. Although I completed the Roster correctly, I forgot to send it before beginning the FLAMP Exercise. Mindy W7ZAP noticed in time to hold the Exercise and send the Roster.

We’re working more mid-USA stations these days in spite of Solar Minimum. Wonky as it is, the band has been favoring distant stations lately, while not totally dropping those near NCS. In the depths of Solar Minimum, it’s still not too tough for digital operations. Overall, signals from all quarters were good tonight. Dave WB0KGN in MN and Carlos W9FE in IL had solid signals in SW/OR. Have you noticed the pattern on the website map? We’ve never worked a station in MT or WY. Maybe a peculiarity of our antennas and low radio-Op density.

Increasing participation from central-USA is exciting.  There’s been some interest in KS/MO to organize a digital HF net. Now that Steve K6ETA has launched Western Digital Net, it will be much easier for new  digital nets to stand-up. New HF digital nets can organize quickly using ORCA and WDN conventions and protocols. Another plus for starting a mid-USA net is the large pool of experienced digital Ops at ORCA and WDN. Many of them can work mid-USA easily. They will make starting a new digital net much easier; they already know Directed net protocols and digital netiquette.

After a big Macro rap in Announcements, I went a bit astray during Traffic and Comments. We use two macro files every net, that’s 96 buttons. Although we don’t use every button every net, we switch back and forth between two sets throughout the net.  When I change macro content or location, it always takes a few sessions to revise my mental map and I can lose track of a relocated button or revised content.

We’ve been experimenting with two slow, but very robust modes. THOR Micro and DomEX Micro. THOR Micro includes FEC and can 100% decode signals below -18db. The effective Thor Micro signal strength is 11 times that of of the equivalent Olivia 8/250 signal. DomEX Micro lacks FEC, but decodes 100% of signals down to -15db. This mode is noticeably faster than THOR Micro and would be the best first choice if you had to use these modes. Both modes are designed for low-pwr and low HF frequencies. More details are available in the FLDIGI Manual 4.1.0.

Our first experiments found the RSID not working for these modes, but the problem was stale software. RSID works correctly in the current fldigi v4.1.09 and maybe in some previous versions. We didn’t try any older versions. These low-power high-performance modes may save the day when even Olivia doesn’t cut it.

ANNOUNCEMENTS 18/Feb/2020

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex157.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/
FLAMP exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that
file to NCS in the Traffic Round with FLAMP.

MACROS: Digital Operators friend or folly? Macros are powerful tools for
digital Operators. They can seamlessly replace repetitive typing with a single
mouse click. They also showcase the depth of our digital operating skills. Used
to enhance communications, they’re usually unnoticeable to the receiver. Used as
virtue-signals, they waste time, bandwidth, and patience. Operators new to macros
are often charmed by the power of macro TAGS and can’t resist including TAGS with
extraneous information. We’re preparing to handle digital traffic in emergencies.
Brief and concise text is fundamental. Keep this in mind while building macros. Is
the Maidenhead TAG germane here, or am I sending unrequested/unneeded
information and wasting time and bandwidth?

A few QSOs at a PSK-31 watering hole will make this abundantly clear. Many digital
Ops today QSO mainly by macro. Most simply revise and expand fldigi’s default macros.
QSOs are filled with information about the Ops version of all software, OS version,
etc. Information few care to learn, but would ask if they did. Lengthy QSO macros
are inappropriate for busy digital nets. For digital nets, macros should be designed
to send only what’s needed, briefly and concisely. Time is of the essence during
ORCA sessions and even more so when working emergency traffic.

Here’s a strategy for digital net macros. Make a different file (orca.mdf, wdn.mdf,
erc.mdf, qso.mdf) for each net. Then, make buttons on each set that call your other
sets. This enables you to switch macro sets instantly. Now, make the macros in each
file specific for the protocols and conventions of each net. Pay attention to what
NCS wants. Digital check-in protocols vary widely. ORCA & WDN want ck-in info on
one line. ID ERC wants a seven line Report. Parse the protocols and send NCS only
what they want. You’ll be a good example to those now learning digital networking.

Net Report posted soon: http://orcadigitalnet.com/reports/

Hackers Target Massachusetts Police Department Website

outhwick, Mass., Police Chief Kevin Bishop announced Thursday that the department’s official webpage, www.SouthwickPolice.com, has been taken out of commission due to

hackers infecting it with malware.

The page had been infected with redirect malware that automatically sends the user to another site.

In this case, people logging onto the Southwick police site for news and information or police activity and arrest logs would instead be sent to a webpage for an

online pharmacy.

:mg:1155 Western Digital Net Update — Edited as much as possible!

After much consideration and having spoken with both NTS and NTSD (digital) ops, the decision has been made that the WDN will forward messages via NTSD only, and only messages that are 100% NTS SOP compliant. In short, the onus is on the sender to have a correct test-only radiogram (sri, no FLMsg forms).

The NTSD format has a specific subject line that MUST have a sender’s serial number as well as the recipient’s ZIP code added in a very specific format. If any part of the NTSD message is incorrectly formatted, human intervention will be necessary to correct and send it. WDN will not be doing that for the time being.

The WDN is always happy to forward messages via Winlink or regular packet/BBS so long as a valid email address or hierarchical BBS address is provided.

The WDN Website is nearing completion and we look forward to serving the Amateur Radio community in many different ways! Thanks for bearing with us while we figure all this out we will see u Thursdays at this time/freq!

As always, MANY thanks to all the ORCA ops!!!
K6ETA and the kindred spirits of the WDN Team!

Beautiful sunny day here today, had a full fill of solar into my station batteries.

Had a great club dinner out tonight and gabbing went long, so missed first half of ORCA-DN tonight. Pretty good signals for those I can hear.

THOR100 and DomEX44 didn’t do as well as I had expected, maybe too wide & fast. Might should have tried a narrow & fast to compare… next time. Band seems good for most stns. Signals improving by Comment round.

THOR Micro and DomEX Micro don’t have TxID. They are super slow, but VERY efficient in poor condx. Might be good in terrible band condx to make a sked for QSO in better condx. However, Ops would have to know which mode the other is using.

Great to see all stns on the WF tonite. Hope to work with you all again soon!

SHORTWAVE RADIOGRAM

Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB. Shortwave Radiogram continues VOA Radiogram's tradition testing new modes and is an interesting source for Digital Ops wishing to practice more with FLDIGI & FLAMP.
