ANNOUNCEMENTS 18/Feb/2020

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex157.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/
FLAMP exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that
file to NCS in the Traffic Round with FLAMP.

MACROS: Digital Operators friend or folly? Macros are powerful tools for
digital Operators. They can seamlessly replace repetitive typing with a single
mouse click. They also showcase the depth of our digital operating skills. Used
to enhance communications, they’re usually unnoticeable to the receiver. Used as
virtue-signals, they waste time, bandwidth, and patience. Operators new to macros
are often charmed by the power of macro TAGS and can’t resist including TAGS with
extraneous information. We’re preparing to handle digital traffic in emergencies.
Brief and concise text is fundamental. Keep this in mind while building macros. Is
the Maidenhead TAG germane here, or am I sending unrequested/unneeded
information and wasting time and bandwidth?

A few QSOs at a PSK-31 watering hole will make this abundantly clear. Many digital
Ops today QSO mainly by macro. Most simply revise and expand fldigi’s default macros.
QSOs are filled with information about the Ops version of all software, OS version,
etc. Information few care to learn, but would ask if they did. Lengthy QSO macros
are inappropriate for busy digital nets. For digital nets, macros should be designed
to send only what’s needed, briefly and concisely. Time is of the essence during
ORCA sessions and even more so when working emergency traffic.

Here’s a strategy for digital net macros. Make a different file (orca.mdf, wdn.mdf,
erc.mdf, qso.mdf) for each net. Then, make buttons on each set that call your other
sets. This enables you to switch macro sets instantly. Now, make the macros in each
file specific for the protocols and conventions of each net. Pay attention to what
NCS wants. Digital check-in protocols vary widely. ORCA & WDN want ck-in info on
one line. ID ERC wants a seven line Report. Parse the protocols and send NCS only
what they want. You’ll be a good example to those now learning digital networking.

I had my first experience with THOR micro and DomEx micro last night. It was impressive BUT VERY SLOW. W9FE in Illinois copied my mediocre, incredibly weak minus 20 db signal 100%. Could be useful in bad conditions.

After much consideration and having spoken with both NTS and NTSD (digital) ops, the decision has been made that the WDN will forward messages via NTSD only, and only messages that are 100% NTS SOP compliant. In short, the onus is on the sender to have a correct test-only radiogram (sri, no FLMsg forms).

The NTSD format has a specific subject line that MUST have a sender’s serial number as well as the recipient’s ZIP code added in a very specific format. If any part of the NTSD message is incorrectly formatted, human intervention will be necessary to correct and send it. WDN will not be doing that for the time being.

The WDN is always happy to forward messages via Winlink or regular packet/BBS so long as a valid email address or hierarchical BBS address is provided.

The WDN Website is nearing completion and we look forward to serving the Amateur Radio community in many different ways! Thanks for bearing with us while we figure all this out we will see u Thursdays at this time/freq!

THOR100 and DomEX44 didn’t do as well as I had expected, maybe too wide & fast. Might should have tried a narrow & fast to compare… next time. Band seems good for most stns. Signals improving by Comment round.

THOR Micro and DomEX Micro don’t have TxID. They are super slow, but VERY efficient in poor condx. Might be good in terrible band condx to make a sked for QSO in better condx. However, Ops would have to know which mode the other is using.

Great to see all stns on the WF tonite. Hope to work with you all again soon!
