80m worked well for most stations tonight. Rick K0KEX in Smithville,MO (2028 mi) was able to copy the FLAMP exercise and participate in the Traffic and Comment rounds with a solid signal of S9+ (8dB). Unfortunately, Ed KG5DGI in Aztec,NM (1370 mi) experienced poor propagation tonight. He was unable to copy much of the net. Propagation can be fickle.

PSK63RC4 and PSK250R were CONFIRMED by Jaye KE6SLS and Bruce KB7VX, both 100 miles south. All other stations CONFIRMED Doug K7KY’s third transmission in MFSK32.

Our recent experience with the CA/FIRE Support nets highlighted the need for alternate Net Control Stations.  We’re thinking of special event nets, not running the ORCA DIGITAL NET.  Spontaneous support nets will be easier to NCS than ORCA.  For all Directed nets, an accurate roster is fundamental.  Building and maintaining an accurate roster, underlies all net operations.

To begin learning NCS routines, we hope you will try one of our favorite methods.  We initially learned net operations by logging check-ins as-if we were the NCS. This practice is stress free and actually enjoyable.  You’ll check your own progress.  Open a Blank form in FLMSG.  When someone checks in and NCS replies:

W1HKJ < W7ZAP RR Dave tu
W1HKJ Dave Toney,AL < W7ZAP

Copy ‘W1HKJ Dave Toney,AL ‘ and Paste it in the FLMSG Blank form.  It’s that simple.  Even though you may not copy every station checking in, you should copy our reply.  You’ll also see us reply to Ops checking-in with VidID, although you may not see the VidID yourself.  Even if you miss a station now and then, you will gain ck-in experience and increase your digital-net skill set.

Doug and I run a quiet ‘tune-up net’ before every ORCA DIGITAL NET to focus, revise macros,  and prepare for the net. It’s a proven routine for us. We also do practice sessions on our own with our SignaLink and/or radios off; only FLDIGI is active. To learn more about the FLDIGI Logger, see the online FLDIGI Manual.

We hope to inspire ‘ORCA Affiliates’; digital training nets using the ORCA format. The least stressful approach for a new digital NCS would be to learn and practice NCS routines on 2m digital nets. You can hone NCS skills and teach new Ops Directed digital-net protocols in an easier environment.  The vagaries of HF propagation makes HF nets more demanding than VHF/UHF nets.

The evaluation images reflect propagation differences between near-by and distant stations:

ANNOUNCEMENTS 12/Nov/2019

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex145.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLAMP
exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in
the Traffic round with FLAMP.

We heard from two Ops who reviewed the Quick-Start rewrite; we hope more of you also
reviewed that section and found nothing amiss. Howard KB6NN suggests we next rearrange
Quick-Start in three levels, beginner, intermediate, and advanced. A good suggestion.
We’ll keep this in mind for the next update, although we’ll keep our Intermediate/
Advanced curriculum. We stopped teaching entry-level computer and FLDIGI skills a
long time ago. Amateurs new to digital operations usually learn basic PC skills and
beginning FLDIGI NBEMS operations from Elmers and local VHF digital training nets.
New ORCA Ops are usually computer savvy. PC skills are as important as familiarity
with FLDIGI NBEMS. W/o basic PC skills, it’s difficult to configure and reliably
operate FLDIGI NBEMS applications.

We’re also developing a website section, ‘NCS TOOLS’, for NCS procedures and tactics.
Mindy W7ZAP is currently developing a How-To guide for digital net Ck-In. The FLDIGI
Logger makes digital net check-in much easier and helps build a detailed net roster.
With the How-To guide, we’ll include our ORCA log file with every station known to
ORCA. This section will enable you to practice NCS skills in a relaxed and stress
free manner. We’ll outline our check-in process and enable you to take ck-in along
with NCS.

Although you may not plan to be a Net Control Station, NCS duty may fall to you
anyway. Best to be prepared; practice will increase your digital skill set, useful in all
digital communications. We hope you will take the opportunity to learn digital ck-in
by creating your own roster as we do check-in. It’s an easy and low stress method for
learning the check-in process. You can begin taking ck-in with us next session. When
we finish the Logger section, you will have our ORCA log file and CALL/NAME/QTH for
every station known to ORCA will appear in the Logger when you click their callsign.

We’re also working on a main-page section for ORCA Affiliates; digital training nets
using the ORCA format. This will enable others to develop digital training nets w/o
having to create format from scratch. Our website would define and explain the Affiliate
nets perfectly, saving them development time, effort, and expense. The website is a
general guide and reference for working the net. The ‘ORCA Affiliate’ section will
have a page for each Affiliate noting any difference between the Affiliate and ORCA,
like schedule, NCS info, deviations from ORCA’s format, etc. Affiliates will have
access to the FLAMP Exercise archive too.

RePost: When we have too many active station for the FLAMP Exercise, we’ll ask some
stations to sit-out the exercise, but participate in the Traffic and Comment rounds as
usual. An ‘*’ will precede their Callsign on the roster. We’ll try to choose stations
likely to CONFIRM the traffic anyway so they will still have FLAMP practice traffic
for the Traffic Round.

W7ZAP and the ORCA DIGITAL NET de KB7VX

Perfect copy from NCS tonight here in Fortuna; also KS6M W1EEP AND KE6SLS. Seems like the band is mixed tonight, some NVIS and some DX.

I would like to communicate with anyone that has the full version of VARA. I bought it for $69 but cannot get it to function faster than the trial version, which is locked at 175 bps. I have emailed the creator of this program many times and he has had me check various set-ups in the Quick Guide, but still I am locked out of the high speed aspects of VARA. If anyone has a working full version, I would like to communicate with you. Please email me at uscoverage@hotmail.com.

If you can help Bruce, please reply after the net. Bruce we’ll ask some winlink friends and see if they can help
