We had a Silent Key report tonight for Paul KE6NVU, an ORCA DIGITAL NET founder. Paul passed away suddenly on 30nov17. And, more sad news. I learned after the net that Brad WA7HHE’s wife Mardith KB7HHB passed away 02dec17. Please keep these families in your thoughts and prayers. These are difficult times already w/o additional tragedy.
Although the band was noisy, the net went quite well. The band was long again, favoring the distant stations in UT & PA. PA? Yes, PA! Ben KE3KQ checked in from Royersford,PA near the end of the net. That’s a long band. A few days ago, I checked into Ben’s Ten Tec net on 3.581 with PSK-31 @ 50w and became their most-distant ck-in. Ben’s ORCA record may not be broken soon. I’ve often wished our software benefactor, Dave W1HKJ, could check in some night and enjoy our use of his software. I didn’t think it would be possible, but now, I think just maybe.
We want to welcome another first time ck-in, Jon WB6AEA in Livermore,CA. He’s currently using HRD, but will install the FLDIGI suite and join us when he has it configured. Other new Ops include some of our nearby neighbors in Coos County,OR. Craig KD7CL has been with us a couple months now. Pat KA7PAT, Tom KF7RSF, and Kriss WA7PHI have begun checking in and monitoring. It’s great to have these Ops working with us. An original goal for ORCA was to engage digital OPs in the surrounding counties to establish mutual-aid relationships for times of need. These Coos Co. Ops helped Mindy W7ZAP & I come up to speed quickly with Winlink/WINMOR for the Triton 32 exercise. It’s good to have them aboard.
Checking into various digital nets helps me broaden my digital skills and certainly makes me appreciate our regular ORCA members. It’s the members that enable ORCA to run smoothly thru complex routines every week. We totally enjoy working you. You are the supportive learning environment that attracts others to join and practice with us. It’s very satisfying to be working with this team.
Mindy experimented with sending the FLAMP exercise file twice in succession. Ken AD5XJ, NCS for the Int’l SATERN Digital Net, does this for their weekly bulletin in FLAMP. He also sends the file-header twice. We adopted that strategy last month. Results of sending the entire file twice are inconclusive so far. We didn’t have many active stations tonight and most copied it 100% on the first pass. We’ll have to kick it around a bit more. Solid copy is our ultimate goal, but we need to practice for emergencies during tough condx. The more opportunities we have to practice REPORT, fill, and RELAY, the better we’ll do when these skills are necessary to complete the mission.
Mode choice is an even more crutial digital skill. Knowledge of the best mode for condx is gained through practice. There are many modes and new modes are added frequently. Poor band condx are perfect for learning their strengths and weaknesses. You’re welcome to send your practice traffic in the mode you think best suits condx. If you change the mode, be sure your TxID is active so all stations follow automatically. Oh Oh! Didn’t print well for anyone? Not a problem. We all learned something.
Bill K6QOG & Steve K6ETA sent grayscale images during Traffic. They printed very well for condx; very few pixels astray. The b/w images complete much faster than color. Steve sent his image @ 2X speed. 4X is also available. These faster speeds are not available in the macro TAG. I tried to add them in, but it broke the macro. When sending images by macro, the transmitter stops after the image completes, but when sending images from the TX menu, the transmitter is not stopped after completion. I’ll ask Dave W1HKG about this.

ORCA ANNOUNCEMENTS 05 December 2017
SAD NEWS: Paul Carlin KE6NVU, SILENT KEY
February 1951 – November 30, 2017
Paul was an ORCA plank-owner. He was the Pelican Bay ARC past
president and current VP and ARES AEC. His ready smile and affable
personality will be missed by family, friends and colleagues. Keep
his wife Joy and their family in your thoughts and prayers.
Tonight’s Optional FLAMP exercise distributes ‘ex49.txt’, an FLMSG
/FLAMP exercise using the FLMSG Blank form. Complete the instructions
and send the file to NCS during TRAFFIC round using FLAMP, or send
your own practice traffic or QRU.
FLDIGI is again SOUNDFORGE Project of the month:
Dave W1HKJ’s FLDIGI software was again chosen Project the Month @
SourceForge. Last time is was ‘Staff Pick’. This time it’s ‘Community
Pick’. Check it out @: https://sourceforge.net/blog/december-2017
-community-choice-project-month-fldigi/
OFF-NET-FREQ Traffic practice:
Beginning this month, we’ll pass traffic off-net-frequency on the
3rd Tues each month. On the 2nd Tues, I’ll remind you to create a
short msg you can send the following week. Don’t decide the recipient
until we see who checks in. Following ck-in, I’ll call for’Traffic
to list’ for this exercise. We’ll skip the FLAMP exercise.
The recurring CW signal @ 3.582 may be resolved. I’ve been talking
with Mark K7MBA. His CW radio has two crystals, 3.579 & 3.582. He
doesn’t hear us while working CW and didn’t know we’re there. I
think he will be using his 79 crystal while we’re working. He’s
been good to work with.
For more digital traffic practice, don’t forget the monthly DOD/FEMA
Interoperability Exercise on 60m using FLDIGI. Good practice and they

Yes… I ride motorcycles!
I’m used to running PSK, Olivia and Contestia… mfsk is new to me so my style might be a bit… or WAY off. I apprediate your patience.
BTU Doug, K7KY de WB6AEA k
Bv0Jon it’s a learning and practice net, so we’re not concerned when people make mistakes most of us do while learning you won’t have any issues with MFSK not much differnent than what u’ve been using. It’s a good idea to monitor us for a couple weeks to get net-flow and then check in active and work with us we use fldigi, flmsg, & flamp every net u will need to hv flamp active b4 receiving flamp traffic as it doensn’t autostart… check out the website and write if u hv questions what
kind of bike u ride? < K7KY

WB6AEA < K7KY Sounds like a sweet ride, Jon I rode 4 50yrs myself and my XYL Mindy W7ZAP and my co-NCS also rode. We rode mostly sport-bikes and finished up on dual-sports.. then to mountain bikes now, I don’t ride much… I think the urge for a new ride is the same as the urge for a new radio (-: OK Jon nice to meet you and I’ll look forward to working with u hr on ORCA 73 for now Doug K7KY sk

Before RSID: <<2017-12-06T04:36Z MFSK-32 @ 1504>>
GE Doug. Had a good meetin’. still going, but I wasn’t interested in the
raffle etc! :)
New officers, new prez, so that is nice. Jim kw6jim was a GREAT prez, he’ll
be soarly missed I’m sure.
Going to have a new website soon! So I will pass that info along as it
finalizes, new ham is taking it over, just earned his General class, so
I expect him on the digi modes soon!
The net went fast eh! Just scrolled up a bit.
How was the band?
k7ky de ke6sls k
Band was actually pretty good good for digital anyway…. this will give u an idea abt the band I had a late ck-in just b4 closing a guy I met a couple nights ago Ben KE3KQ in PA can u believe that?? < K7KY
Before RSID: <<2017-12-06T04:40Z MFSK-32 @ 1504>>
wow, PA is serious dx for these feeble bands these days! Nice work! Wonder
how much power he was using. That is very cool though. I miss working all
the cw ops on the east coast, I took it for granted if you can beleive that!
anyway, good work. I have updated our HF net for Monday nights:
6:30pm PST HF PHONE NET
6:15pm PST HF Digi net.
then we’ll just do the following three nets as usual. but I feel
that will help us actually get all the people that can’t hear us
at 7:45pm. Crossing my fingers. I’ll email this to ya as well.
btu om!
de ke6sls k
KE6SLS < K7KY FB Jaye… i think the change in time is a good idea… might work & might not quite a difference btwn digital & phone signals sometimes I ck in easily with you digitally and can’t even hr Jim on HF.. or many others either… Ben in PA was using 50w I think I’ll find out for sure I just emailed him he wrote me after I checked into his Ten Tec net a couple nights ago.. I was cruising round 3.581 and saw psk31 around 1000wf and read the callsign and the end of a sentence saying the net is closing so i asked what net? and it went from there… I’m their farthers ck-in and now he is ours! btu < K7KY
Before RSID: <<2017-12-06T04:45Z MFSK-32 @ 1504>>
fb Doug. Just looked up on qrz, he doesn’t have it updated with eamil… grrrr.
anyway, very neat. I hope u can hear him agn next week! Howabout Patrick, did he
make it in tonight? Also, I think a friend of mine is going to loan Jim k6fwt
an amp! He was going to call him tonight about that. I think it would be
nice if he had a little more juice there, and stay off that darned verticle
he has! The dipole is the only antenna anyone outside of Eureka can hear.
Okay, I better get off here. Have to get the list of hams together for
a mass email.
ummm, thinking, huh, thought gone.
Okay, btu then I’ll zip it up!
