Although a couple propagation websites predicted poor condx and we had a lot of BG noise, MFSK-32 didn’t seem to notice. The weekly FLAMP exercise completed the message to every station on the first pass. Possibly an ORCA first. Who knows, MFSK-64 might have done as well. If we do this well too often, we’ll have to select weaker modes so we can also practice REPORT, fill, & RELAY.

Welcome to Britt K7BDB in Portland,OR and welcome back to Darrell W6ADZ in Reno,NV. With 14 ck-ins we ran a little longer than usual tonight. Thanks for being patient and staying focused. Wow! Five Oregon stations ck-ed in tonight. Probably another record. Usually UT in the major ck-in state.  The three Eastern states, NV, UT ,& ID were half the net tonight.

Want a little more digital traffic practice? Check in with Ken AD5XJ’s SATERN International Digital Net on Saturday morning, 1000p, 14.0645 – 1500wf – Olivia 8/500. Ken recommended we send FLAMP message headers twice. A good idea that we’ve implemented for the weekly FLAMP exercise. Header repeat is set on the FLAMP TX tab @ ‘Hdr Rpt’. The header contains housekeeping information FLAMP needs to decode the packets and assemble the message.

Another digital net that provides weekly FLAMP practice is the Idaho International ERC Digital Net, Bliss W7RUG NCS. One of our regular Ops is the alternate NCS, Dave K7DV. You might remember that Dave stepped in as NCS for ORCA in January when I was ill. Hats off to Dave; ORCA is not the easiest net to run on short notice. ERC meets every Wednesday @ 1800p 3.581 +1500 Hz Olivia 8/500. Our weekly FLAMP exercise is derived from an ERC Digital Net exercise.

Here’s how the test image printed in UT & CA.

ORCA ANNOUNCEMENTS 24 October 2017

Tonight’s Optional FLAMP exercise distributes ‘ex43.txt’, an FLMSG

/FLAMP exercise using the BLANK form. Complete the exercise

instructions and send the file to NCS during TRAFFIC round using

FLAMP, or send your own practice traffic, or QRU.

Thanks to Brad WA7HHE, Gene W1EEP, & Doug KA7FOO for helping

demonstrate off-freq Traffic handling last week. It didn’t go quite

as I anticipated. They did well with the exercise, but the band was

uncooperative and they were unable to complete the exchange, even

Doug’s relay didn’t overcome band condx.

The instructions to them and the net weren’t clear. Some stations left the

net and followed the traffic pair to 2200wf. I dispatched the Traffic

Ops to 2200 so we could still see them on the WF from 1500 while we

continued with net business. The long silence following their departure

probably further confused the net.

On all Directed nets, members join and leave the net thru NCS. We ck-in,

ck-out & recheck with NCS each time. NCS needs to know who is aboard

who is not. Although this in not critical on our net, we’re practicing

traffic net protocols.

We’ll do this again in next week’s Traffic round. Two stations will go

off-freq to pass traffic. We’ll also dispatch a relay Op to better

insure success. Otherwise, net routine will be normal.

Net Report posted as soon as we can…

:p3:7 RADO Op

:mg:1601 The damage caused by natural disasters, such as earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, and flooding, or from manmade/technological events such as explosions or hazardous materials accidents can affect all aspects of a community, from government services to private enterprise to civic activities. These events:  Severely restrict or overwhelm our response resources, communications, transportation, and utilities  Leave many individuals and neighborhoods cut off from outside support

Damaged roads and disrupted communications systems may restrict the access of emergency response agencies into critically affected areas. Thus, for the initial period immediately following a disaster  often up to 3 days or longer individuals, household s, and neighborhoods may need to rely on their own resources for:

 Food

 Water

 First aid

 Shelter

Individual preparedness, planning, survival skills, and mutual aid within neighborhoods and worksites during this initial period are essential measures in coping with the aftermath of a disaster. What you do today will have a critical impact on the quality of your survival and your ability to help others safely and effectively. By learning about the likely hazards in your community and your community’s plans and protocols, understanding hazard-specific protective actions and response skills, assembling

important emergency supplies, and mitigating potential hazards in your home, you will be more resilient to any disruptive even

Sonoma Fires Recovery Phase Update

Sonoma ACS continues to provide communications for the Recovery and Reentry phase of the Sonoma Fires event. Our North and Central County Units are providing comms for Centers of Distribution to hand out personal protective equipment to volunteers and evacuees reentering the hazardous areas. We are also coordinating shuttles in and out of affected areas.
