I’ll be standing in for Doug K7KY at NCS for the next month+ while he recovers from surgery on his finger. He will be monitoring the net and coaching me until his finger is ready to tap away on the KBD again. Fortunately we knew this was coming, so we practiced numerous times during the week with me as NCS. It’s amazing what a difference practicing makes. By the time the real net rolled along, it seemed familiar… instead of overwhelming. Thanks Doug, for setting me up to succeed! Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to having you back on the WF soon ;-)

I was pleased MFSK-64 worked so well during the FLAMP round, only 1 station needed 2 blocks filled. I was able to copy most stations well during ck-in, with 1 station @ 90% copy. Band condx were up/dn, but nothing digital comms couldn’t handle. If you change modes, remember to enable TxID before you TX. I’ll also make a point to remind Ops to do this if I ask you to change modes during the net.

The TRAFFIC round was all FLAMP and interesting; CA fire updates, Rescuer safety. Brad WA7HHE responded to exe34 saying he uses a band pass filter set @ 1.2KHz which still allows for modes like MFSK-64. Both Gene W1EEP and Brad WA7HHE responded to tonight’s FLAMP exercise while participating the net. Nice work to Steve K6ETA who had to shoot a line to get his antenna back on the air! He doubled with a station he couldn’t hear and reminded us of a valuable tool when checking into the net… print your VideoID near the working net freq to catch NCS’ attention. FYI, a large/horizontal Video ID is easiest to read quickly.

ORCA test image copied by W1EEP tonight.

This was my first time back at NCS in a while and I appreciate & enjoy working with you all. Hope to see you on the WF again soon.
73,
Mindy W7ZAP

ANNOUNCEMENTS 08 August 2017

Tonight’s Optional FLAMP exercise distributes ‘ex35.txt’, an
FLMSG/FLAMP exercise using the BLANK form. Complete the exercise
instructions and send the file to NCS during TRAFFIC using FLAMP,
or send your own practice traffic, or QRU.

The FLAMP exercises provide experience in parsing instructions on-the
-fly and working within your PC file system while engaged in net
activities.

NOTE: Narrowing your Band Pass Filter will improve signal-to-noise
ratio. Very helpful during poor band condx. We use, BPF = 970hz for
noisy condx. 970hz is wide enough for MFSK-64 too. We open the filter
for ck-in to read VideoIDs on the WF.

If you change modes, remember to activate TxID so all stations follow.
Return to our working-mode when finished and turn TxID off.

Humboldt ARC is looking for solar eclips band reports. If you can monitor before, during
and after the eclips, send a message to one of the Humboldt county ops and tell us what
you observed! It’s always a learning experience as well as a lot of fun!

Missed ORCA net last week, so tonight it is again a pleasure to work you all!

Where’s Doug? Hope he is feeling okay.

Had my last pork chop and greens along with some fresh baked bread my neighbor brought
to me this week! Yum!

band started at noise floor of s5 but has grown now to s6/s7… bugger! I was hoping to
copy those stations I didn’t copy earlier.

“So long, and thanks for all the fish!”

de Jaye, ke6sls

FB Jaye… Think the idea for reports on solar eclipse condx is cool. Will be fun to see what reports you get. Doug had surgery on his finger today so he is observing and coaching Not
sure when he’ll be back at NCS but he wont be out as long as last time. Nice report Jaye Thnx. BREAK We move on to Gene for comments W1EEP < W7ZAP

W7ZAP DE W1EEP Thanks for being NCS to fill in for Doug. How is Doug finger or fingers at this point and how long is the recovery. It may have changed since they did the
operation. At any rate keep up the great work you are a natural NCS. 73’s from Pine Valley.

Doug had the end bone on his right middle finger removed today. Lucky for him he is a lefty. Not sure how long ’till he’s back at ncs but we think it will be
a more easy recovery than before… maybe a month? BREAK Next is Brad WA7HHE < W7ZAP

W7ZAP and the ORCA net, first off, quick recovery wishes to Doug, he has one great back NCS and doing a super job. Band holding up well tonight.

This station is enjoying working on our new county ECOMM trailer installing and programing radio’s. Will have a training session this Thursday and Friday Evening, then on Aug 19 will
activate for a Mountain Fire Road Race.

Best wishes to all, enjoy the net as alway’s. Brad WA7HHE
