80m was not exactly friendly tonight; big QSB. Probably our worst condx this year. Good thing the net was lighter than usual; the UT Ops were at ARC meetings. By net’s end, only 4 Ops were still in contact. QSB was easy to see on the waterfall. Sometimes the signal faded entirely for a moment. Still, FLDIGI printed faithfully. I love this program.
The weekly FLAMP exercise seems to be working well. We try to change it a bit every week so the exercises don’t become boring. They usually provides lots of opportunity for changing mode and using the RELAY feature to fill all stations. Mindy W7ZAP & I switch roles and I get a catch-up break (-:
During Traffic practice, you’re welcome to experiment with modes. Try a mode you think all stations will copy. We will all benefit from more experience with modes. Band condx should be improving soon and faster modes will be appropriate. Remember to activate TxID first so we all follow your change and turn it off when your finished. NCS will restore net working-mode.
During the Comment round, Tom KF7RSF checked-in from Bandon,OR, his first time on ORCA. Tom hosts the WINMOR RMS, KF7RSF. He has local net commitments conflicting with ORCA, but may get in late now & then. Welcome Tom. I see that Steve K6ETA also has a WINMOR RMS in Petaluma,CA, K6ETA. FLDIGI and WINMOR are the digital foundation supporting emergency communications.

Mindy & I are busy with Curry Co,OR preparations for the 72hr Pathfinder Triton 32 earthquake and/or tsunami exercise June 24-26, Field Day weekend. Odd timing when you want Amateur participation. We won’t be working 72hrs and should have time for some FD radio fun. We hope to get our field-station cargo trailer deployed before then.

Tonight’s weekly FLAMP exercise distributes ‘ex28.txt’, an optional FLMSG
& FLMSG exercise using BLANK form. Return your file in FLAMP to NCS
during TRAFFIC, or send your own practice message, or QRU.
Dave W1HKJ’s AFC/TxID ‘clarification’ is worth repeating:
“RsID will set the frequency to within +/- 3 Hz of the actual signal center.
You should always use AFC on these modes: PSK, QPSK, PSKR, 8PSK, MFSK.
short story:
Net control, use TxID and AFC. Do not use RxID*
Net participants, use RxID and AFC. Do not use TxID.”
* Dave’s recommendation is for regular/emergency digital nets. Here, you are
free to change modes independent of NCS; NCS will have RxID & TxID active. If
you change modes, Activate TxID UNTIL you change back to the net working mode.

Very strange condx tonight. Doug and Mindy started at a strong
599 and +8dB s/n but then 3 minutes later were in the mud. After
that lots of QSB and 80%. Everyone else seemed strong during the brief
times they were on, but given the band I’m sure that was just dumb luck.
Also, Doug was at 1510 and Mindy at 1504 for the whole net.
80M, 60M and 40M were all excellent at 1900 for our Marin NVIS Net
Go figure?

A small net is a nice change… I like getting all FLAMP completed stations to RELAY and it was much easier to take time to fill missing blocks with a small net. I thought I was getting good copy on KA7FOO’s FLAMP TX, but no blocks came thru either time. Odd because it looked good on the WF. Band is fading in & out. Hope everyone has a great week!

All ORCA Well, it’s one of the more strange nets tonight half the net is QRT already only four of us left good thing it not a 15 Op net last call to ck-in < K7KY
