We usually post this report in a day or two, but this week has been extra busy. Our ARC is preparing for Pathfinder Triton 32, an exercise simulating a huge earthquake & tsunami that destroys bridges and roads, isolating the OR coast from the interior valley. Curry County has the only airport along the OR coast capable of supporting heavy lift aircraft (WWII airfield). We are providing digital comms between the local Triage site and city EOC. EOC to main LZ, Curry Co. EOC, and OR/EOC is by WinMor. We don’t have enough Ops and resources, so we’re pretty radio busy besides being in the midst of planting time.

Welcome to Larry N7SND in Cedar City,UT. UT certainly has a lot of digital Amateur Ops. We could us a few extras here in Brookings,OR. We all look forward to better band condx this summer. Gene W1EEP was trying to get in, but no joy. He’s usually solid here.

I’m still researching AFC and TXid function and settings. Not fully understanding their working relationship, I finally questioned the LINUXHAMS forum. I should have asked sooner. After a couple of helpful replies, Dave W1HKJ, the lead programmer stepped in with some ‘clarification’. TU, Dave.

RsID will set the frequency to within +/- 3 Hz of the actual signal center. You should always use AFC on these modes: PSK, QPSK, PSKR, 8PSK, MFSK.

short story:
Net control, use TxID and AFC. Do not use RxID*
Net participants, use RxID and AFC. Do not use TxID.” (highlights/footnote added)

* Dave’s recommendation is for regular/emergency digital nets. Here, you are free to change modes independent of NCS, so NCS needs RxID active. If you change modes, turn TXid on until you change back to the net’s working mode. If you need a lot of fills, you probably need a different mode.

Conducting the net w/o TxID helps reduce overall net time, but isn’t essential to the smooth operation of the net. It’s good form to operate as efficiently as we can, but don’t fret if you forget now & then. Practice will put ongoing station adjustments in the background. Thanks for practicing with us. Your participation makes traffic practice more realistic and effective.

Dave posted more useful info later and I’ll repost the forum thread to the website when I can. Some of this info may not be in the manual or not organized like this.

Hope to see you again next Tuesday evening. 73 Doug K7KY

ORCA ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s weekly FLAMP exercise distributes ‘ex26.txt’, an optional

file-manipulation/FLAMP exercise. Return your file in FLAMP to NCS

during TRAFFIC, or send your own practice message*, or QRU.

DIGITAL MODES:

Knowing the attributes and efficiencies of the various digital modes

can be critical to perfect copy in poor band condx. We will always

be changing modes to pass traffic efficiently when band condx become

more favorable or adverse.

* SUGGESTION FOR THE ELMER IN ALL OF US:

ORCA ‘Traffic’ messages primiarly support message handling practice;

they are also informative, interesting, and sometimes amusing.

Consider sending messages about your experience with a Mode in poor

band condx. Include a brief description of it’s attributes. We will all

benefit from your experience and increase our ability to choose the best

mode quickly.

:sb:80 New Technology Could Offer a ‘High-Speed Internet Lane’ for First Responders

:mg:1083 Multi-Node Label Routing protocol is faster and more reliable than current Internet protocol.

Researchers at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) are developing a “high-speed Internet lane” they hope will ease the flow of informati

on during disasters and prevent the congestion that can delay transmission of key data quickly.

Multi-Node Label Routing protocol is a new network protocol that offers the ability to transport data in desperate times when current Internet

protocols might get bogged down and fail. Multi-Node Label Routing protocol boasts a failover mechanism that chooses an alternate path if a

failure of a link or node is detected. The new protocol can run below existing protocols and run without disruption.

Welcome to N7SND Larry. I seem to have a hard time to remember to turn on TXid when I do mode changes… new habits. Strange night tonight, but good net. Good to see all on the WF.

W7ZAP Tnx Mindy nice report… all Ops like to know how their signal is doing…. BREAK I’m having my share of woes tonight too… fldigi is not tracking signals as it usually does… I missed the beginning of four TX’s because the cursor was off the signal… unusual for me.. maybe because I’m using an Alpha version of fldigi, v 4.0.5.11 Dave is adding quite a bit of CW capacity to fldigi and I didn’t think that would disturb the existing code, but I’ll return to using only published versions of fldigi for ORCA Let’s pop back and see if Larry is around…

I traced back on my screen and found the other station was w1eep and I think

he must have dropped off. anyway, I DID copy Larry for a bit, and I think I would

have copy his tfc if he was able to get it to play nice.

I TOO had issues with fldidi tonight, and therefore, there is a globable grimlin running rampant in fldigi users computers as I type! heeheee.

I hit the wrong macro agn… and closed the TX anyway, I stay on 1500 thru no brilliance on my part, but the LOCK keeps me in place… I hv lots to think about during net already… as you may notice I’ve not mastered turning TXid on and off at the right time yet… I may still return to TXid active when we begin to change mode often during nets… I’d like to experiment with modes

much more than we’ve been doing this winter as this skill is really important to efficient traffic handling in tough condx.. btu < K7KY
