Although band condx were a bit worse than usual, we passed a lot of digital traffic w/o much difficulty. Howard KB6NN was tough copy for me @ 5w while I copied his neighbor Jaye KE6SLS 100% @ 25w. I usually copy Howard’s QRP signal easily. I barely copied Bob W7GBB during early ck-in and didn’t hear him again.  The UT & ID stations comprised nearly half the net tonight. They make a significant contribution to ORCA. They are NBEMS/EMCOM focused and bring a lot of skill and experience to the net. They’re here to practice and we’re fortunate to have them.

No aspersions on our western contingent. We have a solid group of digital communications Operators. You can’t help noticing how smoothly the weekly FLAMP exercise usually goes. It’s more demanding than traffic training exercises on other digital nets. Yet, these exercises come off smoothly; everyone knows the routine and remain focused on their position in the net. An unanticipated benefit of the weekly exercise is the generation of FLAMP traffic for the Traffic practice round. We now have more short messages sent in FLAMP and more practice with REPORT & RELAY.

Mindy began the FLAMP exercise in MFSK-32 . The first three REPORTS indicated it wasn’t working. Still in MFSK-32, she switched antennas and presto, all 12 active stations CONFIRMED. Nice to have more than one antenna available. Great job by every Op.

RX: W1EEP  UT

Although I thought the TXid issue was resolved, it’s not yet so. Steve K6ETA knows more about how fldigi’s AFC works than I. I hope you stuck around a few minutes after net and copied my conversation with Steve. If not, please read it in the Net Log (below) and weigh in with your knowledge and thoughts about the value of TXid for the net. I won’t paraphrase his comments here. Steve suggests we meet after a net to experiment with TXid.

Steve says AFC is not needed in normal condx and fldigi will follow a wandering signal on it’s own. He shifted off 1500 from 5 to 15hz, up & down, and my station locked on every time with AFC disabled. I need to gather my thoughts and understanding so I can pose an intelligent question to the LinuxHams forum. Dave W1HKW and many of the fldigi programming team moderate this forum. It’s an easy site to embarrass yourself by asking questions before doing your homework.

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise asked how long you’ve been a licensed Amateur.  We posed this question last September too.  I was surprised both times.  Last year, 11 responding Ops totaled 312yrs as Amateur Operators.  Tonight, 4 respondants totaled 137yrs of experience.  Then, the average per Op was 28yrs; today’s respondants average 34yrs.  No wonder digital traffic practice goes so smoothly.

So, learn what you can about TXid and experiment with it when you have time. Thanks for practicing with us tonight. I hope to practice with you again next Tuesday. 73 Doug K7KY

ORCA ANNOUNCMENTS

Tonight’s weekly FLAMP exercise distributes ‘ex21.txt’, an optional

file-manipulation/FLAMP exercise. Return your file in FLAMP to NCS

during TRAFFIC round, or send your own practice message, or QRU.

In this multitasking exercise we practice responding to traffic while

maintaining focus on net operations.

We’re not yet on-board with dropping TXid. Last net, our first w/o

TXid active, I twice missed the beginning of a msg because AFC did

not track the signal. TXid also includes frequency. Howard KB6NN

also reports chasing signals manually and missing initial data.

I doubt we were the only stations chasing signals that evening.

Depending on content, this causes resending and consumes more time.

Other than the small time penalty, our TXid/RXid settings work well.

We keep TX @ 1500 with LOCK and TXid keeps RX on frequency.

Unless I’m still missing something here, I think TXid has more

benefit than detriment for the net.

Dave W1HKJ has fixed the bug in the macro tag, ‘SAVE’. This tag

saves the current macro file with one click. Very handy when u

edit/write macros on-the-fly and don’t have time to navigate to the

top bar and click thru four menus. Dave is great to work with.

Steve, WA7PTM, RPi Workshop Coordinator@ SEA-PAC June 2017, is

still looking for an FLDIGI presenter to work with Randy K7AGE in a

FLDIGI & Raspberry Pi workshop. U don’t need to be familiar with

RBpi. He needs someone familiar with FLDIGI to demonstrate the connect

between stations using large plasma monitors.

Contact Steve: seapac-2017@aberle.net

:mg:817 On April 20th, the Rainbow Canyons Amateur Radio Club ECOMM GROUP participated in a combined Five County Hospital and Great

Utah Shake Out earthquake drill.

Hospitals from Five Southern Utah Counties and Northern Arizona participated in the communication exercise.

Hospitals and health departments checked into a UHF/ VHF intertie net. After roll call the net was open to area Damage Assessment reports.

Digital Damage Assessment Reports were sent on a separate VHF frequency to the Cedar City Hospital Communication Center. Three NBEMS

messages were received and processed to one Voice Damage Assesment Report.

Lessons learned revolved around operator training,to provide pauses to prevent linked repeater time outs and the use of phonetics for callsigns.

Also the value of Team copy in the Communication Center.

K7KY de K6ETA

Thanks Doug and Mindy for another great net.

My thoughts on TxID and RxID are as follows: Everyone should have RxID on

but only those who intend to change or restore the mode should turn on TxID

for that purpose. Anyone wishing to change the mode should get permission from

NCS first if possible. If everyone locks their VFO at 1500 and it should work.

The only thing we lose is a tune before keying. So if there’s a point at which more

that one station could key up, use the TUNE button to see if you have it first.

I really think TxID wastes a ton of time…

All the best and 73,

K6ETA Steve in Sonoma County, CA

K6ETA Steve… I was in agreement with u until we tried it last week. I’d forgotten that TXid also sends frequency and AFC uses that data to track RX signal.. last week I was missing the beginning of TXs because I had to follow the signal manually… that considered, I think the time savings is not equal to the time req to ask for a resend when u miss the beginning… I’ve been reading the manual to see if AFC can be tuned ,but haven’t found any help yet… I think we need the freq info in TXid.. ur thoughts? < K7KY

So back to TxID and AFC, etc. The Calavaras NBEMS Net never used AFC and rarely needed TxID and it worked great. I haven’t used AFC for a long time and never have trouble. If a station’s VFO is WAY oof 1500, that’s reare.

are.

That’s my $n42

btu Doug K7KY de K6ETA k

K6ETA < K7KY

K6ETA < K7KY Steve is the NBEMS net HF or VHF? Howard KB6NN also reported trouble tracking RX signals… we do have stations occasionally as far off as 10-15hz and AFC usually tracks them well. I’ve always used it to keep on freq. Maybe AFC can be fine tuned, I don’t know… we’re talking about 2.8sec in MFSK-32 not too much time when u think of time spent asking for a repeat etc… So far, only u & Howard have had much to say on the issue… btu < K7KY

K7KY de K6ETA

It *was* an 80M net using MFSK32, Thor22 and sometimes 8PSK125. We did not use AFC (which is probably your issue). Just turn it off and lock on 1500.

If a station was more than 25 off from 1500, they were told to run the calibration software and that fixed it. I think that only happened once.

So it’s rare to actually need AFC.

I have never used AFC on ORCA and have never had a probaem copying .

OK, I’m TXing at 1508 and as long as your botto¨umber is on 1500 we are 8 off. Now I’m going to move to 1512. OK this is 1512 and im thinking you are still copyimg me just fine.

btu Doug K7KY de K6ETA k

K6ETA < K7KY UR right… copied all along would it still cpy correctly if the TX began 8-10hz offf 1500? < K7KY

K7KY de K6ETA

OK from the get-go I’m at 1510 on this tx. How cpy?

btu Doug K7KY de K6ETA k

K6ETA < K7KY still OK pse go 15 down and tx agn tu < K7KY

K7KY de K6ETA

OK, I’m now at 1485 and was froaxCnhe beginning. Heh, typing is slower down here. Hi.

btu Doug K7KY de KSsee1as

K6ETA < K7KY My typing degenerating too…. this is very helpful, Steve.. Mindy did not cpy the move to 15down, but I did… What’s the function of AFC then? < K7KY

K7KY de K6ETA

AFC is for VERY bad transceivers. And again, you can run calibration if you’re that ban. Calavaras net never saw that and we went for 8 months (?) or so with AFC and TXid off

btu Doug K7KY de K6ETA k

K6ETA < K7KY fB Steve… I’m following u OK I still wonder why last week and the first tiime w/o TXid I had multiple experiences having to follow the signal myslef… Howard too… what u think? < K7KY

K7KY de K6ETA

Because you both had AFC ON and it is slow to acquire… if it were off from the get-go, you would lony loose somethig 1ktp+ off…

btu Doug K7KY de K6ETA k

K6ETA < K7KY OK Steve I hope I don’t drive the net members crazy with fiddlilng around with the format… I see ur point and we’ll revisit the issue this week… I do want the net to run as smoothly and efficiently as we can within reason….. thanks for ur input and information… I love this net… I’ve learned so much since we began the net and most of it from the Ops who work with us every week btu < K7KY

K7KY de K6ETA

We could ask for volunteers outside the net (maybe after) to stick around and try with AFC off and no TxID. That way you only change the official format once it has proven to work outside the net…??

Of course it’s your baby and I agree not to try knee-jerk experiments during the official net.

btu Doug K7KY de K6ETA k

K6ETA < K7KY Steve ur idea to experiment following a net is grreat… I’ll make a plan and hope u can join us in the effort… tnx again.. time to get a bite to eat… 73 Doug K7KY

K7KY de K6ETA

OK, FB and happy to help….TXid is fine too if you want to keep it that way. OK,

tnx fer QSO Doug, 73

K7KY de KD7MW, What net were you just on? I just came onto the tail end.

just checkin’…..

de Peter, KD7MW K

KD7MW < K7KY GE Peter… We’ve just concluded the ORCA DIGITAL NET we meet every tues @ 0230z 1930p 3.581 1500 wf MFSK-32 btu < K7KY

k7ky de kd7mw. rrr thanks, I was curious. I had been down on 10 and 7 MHz trying to work somebody digitally, but nobody bit. Tuned up here, and suddenly, loud signals.

I’m in Shoreline, WA, just north of Seattle. Is the ORCA net an NTS net or ad hocH?

de kd7mw k

KD7MW < K7KY FB Peter… I’m in Brookings,OR u can learn more about ORCA here: orcadigitalnet.com we’re a traffic practice net not affiliated with any organization… about 4.5 yrs old now… We have a fairly intense routine of sending practice traffic using fldigi flmsg flamp

we also have lots of fun and learn quite a bit from each other… btu < K7KY

K7KY de KD7MW, FB Doug. Got the URL, will read up.

Sorry if I’m not th world’s most accurate typist. I am a retired computer net work admin, support person, etc. ect. I don’t have a big antenna, so I like to use digital to work smarter, as they say. Sunspot cycle has been very disappointing, so I joke that I used to work the world, and now I’m happy if I work Indiana… (hi). Anyway, I’m running fldigi here, but haven’t explored the other parts of the

suite.

Aside from that, I play the bassoon in some amateur classical music groups, keeps me out of too much trouble.

K7KY de KD7MW k

KD7MW < K7KY FB Peter… ur typing seems good to me.. I’m just recovering from a hand injury and having to relearn typing with my rt hand… its going pretty well. I’m not at my best after just completing the net… I’m the NCS and have to type constantly thru the net I see ur interest in radio follows ur profession… I initially got my license to do CW & digitall and they’re still my favorite…. spelling is as important as typing… (-: well, Peter I’ve just finished a long net and we about to finish the Chinese take out we started before the net @ 1930 nice to meet u and I hope u’ll have time to check out ORCA its a good idea to monitor the net a couple times to understand how it

flows… ur will eventually need flmsg & flamp, but u don’t need them initially btu < K7KY

K7KY de KD7MW, wow, you’re doing great after the injury. I had one back in 1990, pinched ulnar nerve in my right wrist. Had surgery, which was successful, but I got out of tech writing and into network admin and support so I wouldn’t be pounding the keys so much. // Nice to meet you too, and perhaps I’ll pop on here during the official net. Thanks for giving me the basics rundown on ORCA. Have a great evening, and 73 for now.

K7KY de KD7MW, sk and so long for now…..
