80m was noisy tonight, but MFSK-32 was adequate for net business and traffic. Mindy W7ZAP tried MFSK-64 for the weekly FLAMP exercise, but returned to MFSK-32 to complete the message. Christine AF7OK tried PSK125R for her traffic, but it was not copied well either and we returned to MFSK-32 for the remainder of the net. Howard KB6NN printed well here with 3w, but was not copied by everyone tonight. I had good contact with Howard and Jaye KE6SLS in Eureka,CA tonight. I’ve not connected Eureka stations well lately; they’re about 100mi away.

Here’s the test image Gene W1EEP received in UT.

w1eep_2017-01-11
TX: K7KY/OR  RX: W1EEP/UT

Our weekly FLAMP exercise has an additional benefit of needing relays to complete the message. This gives practice in evaluating which net station can best relay to the stations needing fill blocks. Every situation is different. In selecting a relay station, NCS or any station sending FLAMP traffic has to decide which of the stations that CONFIRM is most likely to be heard by those needing fills.

Usually, when members send FLAMP practice traffic during the Traffic session, I conduct the REPORT round. You can conduct the REPORT round for your FLAMP traffic if you like. Let me know before you begin if you want to do it yourself. Please use our regular REPORT routine of prompting members with their callsign only, beginning at the top of the rotation list.

Steve K7ETA just switched to Linux and he’s learning the new OS. Mindy & I switched to Linux Mint 17.3 from WinXPpro a few months ago. I’m still not up to speed under the hood and I’ve configured my old XP laptop again for fldigi/ORCA. I have to wait too long for fldigi updates to show up in trusted packages. My fldigi suite is seldom current. I plan to run the net from the WinXPpro laptop with no web connection to protect against virus and spyware.

It was a pleasure working with you tonight. I hope you’ll return next Tuesday evening and we can do it again.      73 Doug K7KY

Announcements 10/jan/17

Our weekly FLMSG/FLAMP exercise, up next, will distribute ‘ex10.txt’,

an exercise in file manipulation and parsing/following instructions.

You can return this exercise to NCS in FLAMP today, or any practice net.

As always, these exercises are optional; you can send other traffic,

images, or QRU.

Happy Birthday ORCA DIGITAL NET! We’re four years old this month!

Some of you have been with us from the outset, and many have been

with us nearly as long. Thanks for your support and participation.

We’ve developed some effective practice routines and become better

digital operators. Much of the credit goes to veteran digital Ops

who contribute their knowledge and skills to the net.

I used to think I was the only one learning digital NCS, but now I

realize we’re all learning NCS skills. All of our regular members

will be able to conduct a digital net in times of need. You practice

net routines every week and you can easily recall our basic net

structure and quickly organize an effective digital net. I have faith

in you.

The snowy, windy, and icey conditions at the repeater sites may decrease repeater performance to less than required. A few areas are

forecasted to reach flood stage. Be prepared.

A fan dipole antenna has been installed at the new Humboldt Amateur Radio Club’s new location in Eureka with good results so far. More

to follow.

severe weather here. 200% of normal rainfall for the year. Still raining and windy here, many roads closed to flooding and land slides. We have also had massive power outages that are affecting both coastal and inland towns and rural areas. We are expecting major flooding tonight and through the morning of Wednesday. This op is grateful for the solar powered ham shack and very good station batteries—we have not had much sun lately! Guess that is one reason I am here tonight!

wa6nbg still doesn’t have HF rig. Working on it.

Where the hell is Tiller, Oregon? Oh, there you are! Good work Christine! :)

I enjoyed the change up tonight Doug/Mindy. Wish I could cp the more dx signals better though. Too much local noise at my qth.

Had a great dinner. Made my Mums green bean casserole and as usual, 3 parts bean dish to one amazing breaded pork chop. yum yum on a cold, windy, dark, wet, icky night!

We probably have a new DIGI ham lurking–kk6kfb (Chris) near Morgan Hill, CA. He plans to take the general exam soon, already has a radio and antennas!

Hope to hear you all agn next week.

K7KY de AF7OK I just missed my call sign. Everything else is coming through. Ok, here’s my pitch…

All ORCA de AF7OK

I have been using 20w tonight. Can you tell?

The Five Dot Three Net has added a digital net from 1215 to 1245 Pacific Time on 5346.5 kHz, wf 1500 Hz, starting with MFSK32. Yesterday, I sent an image and then sent four messages in different

modes using FLMSG. The modes I used were MFSK32, MFSK64, Olivia 8-500 and THOR22.

This is more of an introduction to FLDIGI and FLMSG for people who haven’t used it before. When

the participants seem to have these two programs working, then I will move on to sending messages

using FLAMP.

There were at least 20 participants that sent a reception report and most people received all messages

and the two images. A couple of people said that FLDIGI didn’t change modes for them. One of them

has just started using it, so I think the settings weren’t set correctly.

Please join us every Monday for the digital portion of the net, as well as the voice check in net starting

at 1300 Pacific Time.
