Tonight, the band was predicted to be poor, but wasn’t too bad. Digital signals worked well and so did Brad WA7HHE’s traffic in MFSK-64. A smaller net tonight and you would think easier for NCS. Oddly enough, small nets are not always easier, I don’t know why. Probably it has little to do with the number of check-ins, at least until we have 18 or 20. Some nights, my focus is not as keen as usual and I occasionally fall behind net flow. Mindy W7ZAP usually has my back, but she’s sometimes busy herself and also misses something astray or forgotten.
I need to tighten my pre-net check list too. I’d turned TXID off for digital QSO’s and forgot to reset it before the net. Mindy & I usually test our stations before the net and run any new routines. Still, things can go wrong. My FLAMP has been working well during pre-net testing, but failed to copy files during the net. After the net, FLAMP copied a file from Mindy perfectly. When working HF digital
together, we both use minimum power and Attenuation. Last time this happened during net, I reinstalled FLAMP and it worked correctly until tonight.
We discovered an anomaly in FLDIGI tonight when Ralph WB7SDR sent his reception report. He included the text string that precedes image transmissions, ‘ Sending Pic:144×140’ in his report. Oddly, this text caused FLDIGI to activate the image feature w/o an image and preempt the actual file.
Pretty weird. I’ll send this glitch to FLDIGI’s lead programmer, Dave W1HKJ.
Mindy conducted the FLAMP exercise tonight and sent a file that leads us to an exercise for next week. I’ll resend this file at the beginning of next week’s net so those who missed it tonight will be able to participate. Ops here tonight will head the roster next week to give others time to complete the exercise during the net. The exercise is not difficult. It entails receiving a msg, editing and renaming it, and resending it in FLAMP. We’ll work with these messages next week instead of practice traffic. I think you’ll find it interesting and useful. It’s important to know our PC operating system and work smoothly with the software necessary to handling digital traffic.
Welcome to all our monitors. Monitoring is certainly useful for developing digital skills. Mindy & I decode one or two VOA Radiogram broadcasts every weekend. Ken K7IFG sends digital bulletins every Tues in FLAMP @ 1900p on 3.5825 + 1500, in numerous modes and speeds. He also provides fills. A great opportunity to explore different modes in varying band condx with minimal effort. Thank you, Ken.
For FLAMP practice traffic, I’ve been managing the FILL and RELAY routines needed to complete the message. If you would like to manage these routines when you send in FLAMP, let me know. I’ll turn the net over to you. It’s working well for our weekly FLAMP practice message that Mindy has been doing. It gives more hands-on experience interacting with multiple stations, calling for REPORTS, and choosing the best station to RELAY to those needing fills. It’s also an opportunity to develop your macro skills. Macros make digital communications much easier.
Thanks for working with us again tonight. I hope to see you again next Tuesday. 73 Doug K7KY

Tonights weekly FLAMP practice message will become your traffic
for next week’s net. Please edit this file in a simple text editor
like Notepad and rename it with your callsign. Next week you will
send this file to NCS instead of other traffic. I’ll resend this
file next week before the exercise for those not here tonight.
Instructions:

image, I’ve not tried this myself, but anyway, the image is just lines… BREAK over to Mindy W7ZAP for comments… < K7KY

W7ZAP copied the following stations:
KE6SLS 100% KBD copy (S-9 +15 s/n=13dB) sig came up from s9 to+15
KB6HOH 100% KBD copy (S-9 +10 s/n=10dB)
WA7HHE 100% KBD, FLAMP copy (S-9 s/n=6dB)

KG7PBX 100% KBD copy (S-8)
K7KY 100% KBD, FLMSG, image copy
Sending the weekly FLAMP file has been really good practice for me. Seems like I make a small mistake each time. Never a big deal, just
learning digital NCS skills. Great to be able to do this without the stress of actually running the whole net!

W7ZAP TU Mindy… nice report my typing is a bit sketchy tonight… BREAK Ralph WB6SDR did you intend to inbed the image
in your file? < K7KY
No I didn’t I don’t think I sent anything but lines in my report but if you got an immage well I didn’t mean to send an immage . I don’t know
why the system froze up in my first flMsg text. I had to reboot to get audiio back but thanks for the feedback on the immage. BTU NCS
WB6SDR IC Just after the line 897D. came this: Got Sending Pic:144×140;h_|{7———————————–
followed by the rest of your file that looked correct… hope this helps < K7KY
well that is interesting . The image was feedback on what I had received early from you as an immage, I didn’t intend to send a iimage
BTU
WB6SDR Very odd, for sure Ralph… when I sent the copied text back to you, it caused my station to stall and it didn’t send
all I was sending to you for a sentence or so… weird for sure… something tricked your fldigi into inserting an image file or sumsuch as the
image was just lines and noise… I’d like to know if you discover what was up… BREAK with Ralph…
ORCA DIGITAL NET – Late Check-ins/Visitors? < K7KY

I* have a feeling that adding all the hiphens was the problem. He
is using all those to break the message. i bet if you were to try it
a few times, it also will fool fldigi into thinking we’re getting a
image file. it also tripped my end, and did not cp image, but also
stops cp on text after the hiphens.
okay, need to make dinner. damned hungry/tired.
cu all next week. have a great week all.
d e ke6sls k
KE6SLS OK Jaye… I wonder about the hyphens as Ralph has been using them for a few weeks not w/o inserting an image… we’ll
see 73 Jaye and thanks for working with us again tonight…. hope work doesn’t get too over bearing… BREAK any more comments,
questions, etc before we close?
ALL ORCA Mindy & I will stick around following net to try a few things to see what’s up with the image in the text…

So Did you get an image file this time?
KB6HOH Steve… stand by a moment pse BREAK Ralph… it was exactly the same the line about Got…. is causing fldigi
to include the image feature, but there’s no image… I don’t want to give the line until the end of this message as it will likely cause the same
problem… here’s the line just before the image comes:

I think the text about image and size sets off FLDIGI and it thinks it is code to send an image but there really is no image… this is the text I
think sets it off … Sending Pic:144×140;ttDoug’s screen. Didn’t know FLDIGI was sensitive to text like that.
Good to know. < W7ZAP
