Well, tonight was interesting for sure. We’ve been planning on dividing the net on the nights when check-ins exceed 12 or so. We tried it tonight with 9 check-ins and it went pretty well. I think it will work well for large nets. We could have more than two groups if needed, assuming we have enough NCS/Alt’s. We could use another NCS/Alt too. Jaye KE6SLS goes to an ARC meeting once a month. Jaye’s Group2 log is appended to the end of tonight’s Net Log.

If you have any interest in learning some digital NCS duties, you can begin easily by taking some Ops off net freq for Traffic and Comments when the net is large. This will be net routine when we have lots of practice traffic. While we all learn and polish our digital traffic skills, I’m learning digital NCS. If this interests enough Ops, we can work toward developing digital NCS Ops too. One step at a time, though. We’re just coming up to speed for formal digital traffic.

Running a short FLAMP message every net is also working well. We filled this message to all but one station tonight and we could have completed it to the last station, but I was anxious to move along to dividing the net. Next net, we’ll complete the message to all if we can. Don WA6NBG CONFIRMED the message and could have filled Jaye easily. Both live in Eureka and connect well.

Hats off to Jaye and the whole net for working thru the net dividing process. This will help many of us to eat dinner at a reasonable hour after nets. I don’t like to see ORCA run much past an hour. We all have lots to do. We don’t want people to wait excessively long to send or receive digital traffic.

Thanks for working with us again tonight. You’ve made this net both instructive and entertaining. I hope to continue working with you on Tuesday evenings. 73 Doug K7KY

ORCA Announcements 26/jul/16

As usual, the weekly FLAMP practice message will follow Announcements. We will attempt

to complete this brief weekly FLAMP message to all Ops.

Tonight we want to test our plan for dividing the net when check-ins are around 12+. We

will pause after the bulletin at the beginning of Traffic round. Half or so will go up

freq with Jaye KE6SLS NCS/Alt. It may take us a couple minutes this first time. Jaye

will take stations he copies well. Both groups will complete Traffic and Comment Rounds

individually and close. Jaye will save his log to be included with weekly Net Log.

Hold Keyboard comments for Comment Round.

If you need to leave early, please check-out with NCS.

:sb:52 Is the Cascadia Subduction Zone a Ticking Time Bomb?

:mg:1158 One of the most ‘terrifying’ disasters in the offing is a Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake in the Pacific Northwest.

This scenario involves a magnitude 9.0 or worse earthquake in the Pacific Northwest that would be felt all the way down to

Northern California. The Pacific Coast would have perhaps an hour of warning before the tsunami hit. As a reference point to how

bad this earthquake will be, the recent earthquake in Japan that registered magnitude 6.2 lasted 20 seconds. The Cascadia quake

would shake the earth for three to six minutes.

The devastation would be great: If it happened tomorrow, there would be perhaps more than 10,000 deaths and 30,000 injuries.

Whole cultures of people could be wiped out and the recovery would take decades. The good news? There’s probably ample time

to prepare, and that preparation has begun. A similar quake is thought to have occurred in or before January 1700.

:sb:24 adventures in beekeeping

:mg:1221

Besides amateur radio another hobby Doug and I share is beekeeping. We have 3 colonies, all swarms that we’ve caught. On Sunday morining we suited up to inspect the hives. Early AM fog had just burned off and the day was beginning to warm up, so I opted to wear socks and sandals instead of boots. Doug saw what I was wearing and opted for socks and tennis shoes. We breezed thru the 1st hive and opened the 2nd. Uh-Oh! Very angry bees. They were very agressive and after looking at a few

frames, they zeroed in on Doug’s socks and began stinging him. Quick! – time to retreat. Poor guy suffered 20+ bee stings. Most were concentrated on his right ankle and some on his left. They even crawled inside his shoe — yikes! Doug’s feet swelled super big and he’s been miserable. Today some of the swelling has begun to go down, but his feet still look like they belong to someone else.

Never have seen a hive so aggitated so quickly. I know beekeepers who don’t wear gloves and have seen some on youtube not even wearing a suit! Can’t imagine what would happen to them in a similar situation. No more sandals or tennis shoes and back to tall boots under our suits.

Some lessons are tougher than others.

Just to fill all of us in. We plan to find a SECOND alt NCS station, NOT in Eureka area. The problem is we have our

meetings on Tuesday nights first of each month, so next week, I’ll be out of the ORCA loop. but like I say, this is training as

WA7HHE < K7KY

de wa7hhe am still here doug

WA7HHE < K7KY Brad we’re thinking that we will need another NCS/Alt for the times we want to divide the net and

Jaye is at an ARC meeting… you have any interest in a parttime NCS/Alt task? < K7KY

k7ky de wa7hhe, have the interest but do not yet have the typing skills hoprgully can hrlp in the future…

WA7HHE < K7KY fB Brad U have one of the better signals on the net, so naturally I think of you… tnx for the

relays.. I don’t type so well myself… especially when I get pressed a bit… I’ll keep you in mind for the future I don’t think it

will take much work as most of the net housekeeping is already funished when we get to that point… tu for considering it and

I’ll keep you in mind and watch your typing (-: thanks for working with us on the net… it’s really going very well and that’s

because we hve so many experienced digital ops…. 73 cu next wwek I hope… < K7KY

k7ky de wa7hhe finding sigs getting much better as it gets darker, ur sig is up to a +7 s/n now really good copy. Appreciate ur

thinking of me and will practice on that darn typing…k7ky de wa7hhe

well .. had some snags but expected that.

I want to officially close with you, so I can collect this nights log for

KE6SLS FB I already closed a few minutes ago…. and, I really messed up earlier… I got hasty and closed before

running the comment round…. one of our fine Ops dropped a quick note asking about comments? So, I reopened and

finished correctly. We had one comment about the split regarding getting dinner on time or sumsuch… I think this will be

received well when the checkin is large… what do you think from that end? < K7KY

Okay, it went well for us, issues with cp ncs/a but expected. I think the split should be 2kc not 1kc for us not to interfere with

each other.

I will email more info tonight. over all, it went pretty darned good. Just remember, humboldt is not gonna be avail next

tuesday, so I hope the net runs well. also, I pointed out that we are looking for a second NCS/a not from Eureka area! hihi….

I did explain all we plan so I think it went really well.

okay, I am going to save this log, move it over to the laptop and prep it for email to ya.

btw, hows the feet feeling now? any better? de ke6sls k

KE6SLS < K7KY FEET! both better sometimes and just as bad if I forget and touch them… right now, they’re screaming.

I need to lay down soon… I took the opportunity to ask Brad WA7HHE if he would be interested in part-time NCS/ALt but he

would like to wait till his typing is better… He’s got a great signal every week… I think we’ll find someone to do this… It’s not

as difficult as having to take the net from the beginning… Lot’s of these Ops are capable… we’ll see who would like to get

involved… Good thing we did this with a small net… it went very welll thanks… I’ll add your log to the main log… btu <

next time will smooth further I know. So we did well. glad of it.

Okay, have the log saved, I’ll move it in a bit. Take care, and also, if you feel up to it, lets meet tomoorrow night 7pm and

:mg:763 The noise level on 80M is a steady S8. I am looking at a good text
editor to use on this file. I am currently using QtCreator as an editor.
This is the Integrated Development Environment (IDE) used at Stanford and
required for the CS106 series for programmers. It seems to work very well on
my Linux desktop for programming in the C++ language which is what Fldigi is
programmed in.

Over this last week I have spent most of my time recovering from my molar
tooth removal; the removal was brutal, almost all of it had to be ground out
because each time she tried to pull out a piece it would break off. The real
shock was the almost $900 cow bone jaw treatment. All seems to be healing
