I hope you find reviewing our net logs useful. It takes half an hour to edit out the noise. This is a useful task for me. I often discover things I missed during the net. Tonight, I see I didn’t acknowledge Steve KB6HOH when he checked in following the comment round. He and Steve K6ETA doubled and when I sorted it out, I didn’t acknowledge KB6HOH. Mindy reminded me, but I was busy updating the roster to resend. I had added him to the roster, so he would know I’d logged him. I’ve participated in ARC net-training for new Amateurs lately and we strongly stressed repeating each check-in’s callsign. It’s what tells the Op you copied correctly.

Anyway, nice net tonight. Conditions were pretty good and improved as the net progressed. Some reception reports now reflect changing conditions during the net. It’s more detail than would occur to me to ask, but I really appreciate the additional info. It helps build a mental database of what we can expect when working different Ops on and off the net. Thanks for the effort. I know it takes time and attention to compile the info during net.

Mindy is including more detail in her reports and tonight I learn that has a cost for me. She’s busier compiling reception data and has less time to monitor the overall operation. I’ve become a little complacent with her backing me up and tonight I asked her who was calling and discovered she was totally focused on her reception report and didn’t know any more than I )-: I’m often doing net housekeeping while others are transmitting. I also monitor net activity, but occasionally lose the thread.

Now to FLAMP. I really like FLAMP. It’s perfect for large files. We will be counting on it for emergency traffic. I think it’s format is simple and intuitive, but doesn’t lend itself well to roundtable nets. Formal traffic would be passed between two stations, with a possible third for relay. FLAMP works very well in this setting. With numerous stations in a practice setting, it can be confusing. I thought it might be quicker for us to send only the automated REPORT and nothing else, but it didn’t work as I thought. One reason is, we’re all used to replying to a call. Not responding is abnormal.  And, I forgot my plan near the end and prompted Ralph WB6SDR again when he didn’t reply. Oops!

So, lets forget my big idea and return to what we’ve been doing. For FLAMP traffic I will go to the next Op and on around the group for FLAMP REPORTS, sending your callsign only. You send your REPORT or no flamp/copy as before. This works reasonably well. I want to retain the routine that provides every Op the opportunity to TX, RX, & Relay FLAMP messages.

I would like you to make a small change when preparing messages for the net. If you plan to use FLAMP, please format the message in FLMSG first. Then, you can send in either format. I’ve asked Mindy to prepare a short FLAMP message for every net. I’ll log her 2^nd after Don WA6NGB at the top of rotation. Don is usually at the top with a general interest bulletin. After Don’s bulletin, we’ll take Mindy’s FLAMP traffic and we’ll do our best to complete that message to every stations, even if it takes multiple fill transmissions or relay. That will give us the experience of completing messages with FLAMP. Following that regular FLAMP traffic, we’ll return to our usual method of only one report/fill round if we have more FLAMP traffic.

And, we will limit the number of FLAMP messages per net. The FLAMP app is important and we want to be very familiar and competent with it. The 2^nd traffic each net will be a regular FLAMP from Mindy W7ZAP.  It will be short and we’ll fill it for everyone if we can. We can do another one or two FLAMPs in the traffic round. Tell me at check-in if you have FLAMP traffic. I’ll conduct a lottery of sorts, and print FLAMP by your callsign on the rotation list. If you don’t get to use FLAMP, I’ll try to favor you for FLAMP next net. We’ll see how this works Nearly everyone’s life is busy these days and we want to give everyone a full spectrum experience w/o making the net too long.

So, only two or three FLAMP messages per net, depending on time, condx, and participation. The first FLAMP will be regular from Mindy following Don’s Humboldt bulletin. We’ll do our best to fill that for everyone. If we have another FLAMP or two, they will follow out regular routine of one REPORT round and fill; then on with regular traffic.  As always, you can keyboard to the net instead of sending traffic. You can also send an image. Hold reception observations for the comment round. Break the net for comments/questions any time with your callsign. Late check-in always OK.

Thanks for working digital modes with us. I really appreciate the focus and dedication of the membership. Our net is a bit more demanding than other digital nets. I think it’s important to practice as many of the facets of digital traffic handling as we can. An emergency situation could be far more demanding. I think our membership will do very well in time of need. We’ve really progressed since beginning the net and we have much yet to cover.

Oh, the images. Thanks to Rick N6IET for sending the image if his earlier self.  I’d like to see more images in traffic round.  Might be a good idea to prepare an image for the time you can’t find something for traffic, or when we’ve already had enough FLAMP (-: Receiving and storing images is automatic, but sending has a short learning curve. It’s good to be acquainted with image transmission. Howard KB6NN emailed the test image he received while I was (unknowingly) at 5w. BTW, he was using 4w tonight; good signal here, Howard.

FLAMP: There’s still some confusion during FLAMP Reporting.

Tonight, we’ll try a simpler routine. Following FLAMP traffic, I

will call each Op in rotation for FLAMP REPORTs only. I’ll prompt

you with your callsign; listen for your CALLSIGN and press your

FLAMP REPORT Button or send nothing. I’ll pause briefly and move

on to the next Op.

Following FLAMP REPORTs and one fill, we go to the next station for

traffic.

Practice is more important than the message. If you don’t fill a

message during net, you can always do so after net. Ops often remain

on frequency to complete messages or resolve technicial issues.

Formal traffic will always be completed to the receiving station, but

will usuallly be passed off the net frequencey.

Visitors and late members are welcome to check-in throughout the net.

Practice traffic will not be passed after traffic round is finished.
