Another weird band night. And, some Ops had high background noise to boot. On the other hand, working with these conditions is great practice for passing traffic in difficult circumstances. Jaye KE6SLS printed the b/w test image better than ever. Following the net he resent the image he received and it looked pretty good here, all things considered. If you want to send this image some time, it’s available for download at the website.

Before closing I sent a small b/w image, hoping to stimulate more image traffic. FLDIGI does a great job with images and they can also be sent by macro. The small image I sent took about 15sec. I included my callsign in very small type to help evaluate image resolution. The same image file can be sent in FLAMP, but would take 40min. I think it’s good to be familiar with image transmission. Sometimes, an image will take less time and bandwidth than a verbal explanation. Simple b/w images are also very helpful for evaluating band condx and signal quality.

FLAMP REPORTs went better tonight too. Thanks to all for your attention and focus. We’re doing a good job of exercising FLAMP, I think. REPORT and RELAY are powerful features and we’re becoming very familiar with them. FLAMP will definitely be important for emergency digital traffic.

Ralph WB6SDR sent an ARRL bulletin in FLAMP MFSK-64. Some stations CONFIRMED it directly. We CONFIRMED another Op with a RELAY. I did that RELAY, but forgot to use the original mode, so it took twice as long in MFSK-32. Sometimes I loose track of the details during the net. Usually, Mindy catches me up, but some things happen so fast there’s no retreat. Anyway, it turned out well.

We developed a nice relationship with Kim Elliott KD9XB, Voice Of America Radiogram Producer, while working with Dave W1HKJ on FLDIGI macros.  Kim inspired us to use images for signal evaluation and we inspired him to print VOA RADIOGRAM on the waterfall.  In the images below, Jaye resent the ORCA image he received at the beginning of the net.  Not bad for a relay.

Late to the net? We don’t mind. We’re always happy to see our radio friends. Some late check-ins have been monitoring and have good reception reports for the net. Our reception reports have really improved over the last year and are quite informative about band condx and signal quality. Thanks for taking time to compile these reports during the net. Everyone benefits from your effort.

And, thanks for working with us again tonight. We’ll do it again next Tuesday evening. Same time, Same freq. Hope you can make it. 73 Doug K7KY

Announcements 31/May/16

Read the Net Report/Log @: http://orcadigitalnet.com/reports/

Net Reports are posted to the website, usually by Wednesday.

I think I understand the confusion we’ve experienced on the

net lately. It’s about FLAMP REPORTS and reception reports. I’ve

not made a clear distinction between these reports. It’s confusing;

especially for Ops new to ORCA. Howard KB6NN put his finger on the

problem.

And, Ken AD5XJ, SATERN Intl Digital Net NCS, suggests we use his

method for FLAMP REPORTs. He tells the net to use the FLAMP REPORT

BUTTON. Good idea, I think.

We have two main events every net. Traffic round and Comment round.

When we have traffic in FLAMP, we go around the group directly for the

FLAMP REPORT (sent with the FLAMP REPORT BUTTON) or ‘No FLAMP’.

Following the REPORT round, we return to the next station in rotation for

regular traffic. During traffic round, you can keyboard about your

station, projects, whatever, as you like.

During the Comment round, we’re looking for reception reports, comments,

observations, questions, etc. We won’t be sending FLAMP traffic during

Comment rounds. That has only happened once and we won’t do it again.

In summary: In Traffic round we’ll be looking for FLAMP REPORTs, sent

with the FLAMP REPORT button. In comment round, we’re interested in how

you received and decoded the other stations, and whatever else you may

want to say or ask.

OPER. error with Fldigi; thanks Doug. Almost everyone is at 1500 Hz which helps me copy without jumping around QSY. I raised

my inverted vee antenna up another 10 feet so maybe that will help.

K7KY de KB6HOH OK Doug FB and GE to you and Mindy.

That was my good friend Steve K6ETA just 20minutes to the North of me.

I didnot see you call me but I saw some garble with a few characters that might have been for me.

Not much going on down here. Very warm today, somewhere in the High 80’s.

Other than that Im just sweating it out here and NO AC to keep cool so I have 3 Fans all running right now.

Last Temp check was about 15minutes ago and still 73F. Anyway thats it for me from the SF North Bay.

OH before I forget has anyone started using the Latest Alpha Built for Fldigi, FLmsg and FLamp??

So BTU Doug K7KY de KB6HOH k
