ORCA DIGITAL NET 17May16 check-in/rotation:

Check-ins: 9
Stations:
WA6NBG Don Eureka,CA Bulletin
KK6RKY Eric Trinity Center,CA flmsg
KE6SLS Jaye Eureka,CA alt/NCS flamp
KB6NN Howard Eureka,CA|
WA7HHE Brad Cedar City,UT flamp
N6IET Rick Los Angeles,CA
W7ZAP Mindy Brookings,OR flmsg
WB6SDR Ralph Folsom,CA
K7KY Doug Brookings,OR NCS

Tonight some of us had excellent copy and some had poor to none from some locations. The band is improving with spring, but is still up and down most evenings. Eureka,CA and Los Angeles,CA were not copying each other. But both copied the more remote stations well. Howard KB6NN must have found the fault in his antenna; his signal was much improved and easily copied here in SW/OR. Did you notice Howard’s 73 on the WF at the end? He’s taken the wfID to a new level. He’ll be a good consultant if you’re learning to use wfID. See the website macro page for a basic primer on the wfID.

We had two FLAMP messages tonight and Ken K7IFG sent bulletins in FLAMP prior to the net. FLAMP is a key app for formal and emergency traffic. We are becoming more proficient with FLAMP. Now, we use the RELAY feature to send fill blocks from a station more likely to be copied by those needing fills. Brad WA7HHE sent an FLAMP message in MFSK-64. It was CONFIRMED by three stations. Others need fills or missed it entirely. The fills were relayed by Mindy W7ZAP also in MFSK-64 and more station CONFIRMED. We only do one fill round for FLAMP traffic. For practice, it’s not important to complete each message during net. The nets are long enough already. Ops wanting to complete a message may do so after net. Mindy filled Brad’s message for Jaye KE6SLS following the net.

Looking for late and visiting stations is working better now. Ralph WB6SDR checked in from Folsom,CA near the end. He’s running the fldigi suite on a Raspberry Pi 2.  Very interesting. I’ve been thinking of building a lightweight digital field station with Raspberry Pi 3. Welcome back, Ralph. From Rick N6IET we learned that Steve K6WSJ in Venice,CA is recovering from surgery on both hands. He’ll be off digital and CW for awhile. We wish him a speedy recovery.

Early check-in is working better for me now. I try to start looking for earlies around 1915. When Ken runs bulletins on 3.5825+1500, I take earlies a little higher. Finding NCS prior to net is good practice for the members. Practicing frequency agility is good for me too. The net is always where you find NCS. It’s a big plus for me to check-in some stations early.

Thanks for working with us tonight. I hope to see you again next Tuesday evening. 73 Doug K7KY

Announcements 17/May/16

Read the Net Report/Log @: http://orcadigitalnet.com/reports/

Net Reports are posted to the website, usually by Wednesday.

We plan to split the net after announcments when check-ins with traffic

reach 12-15. Jaye KE6SLS, our alternate NCS, will take half the Ops to

another freq for the traffic and comment rounds. Both nets will close

independently. The log for the split section will be appended to the regular log. We can give this plan a try next time we have a large

check-in.

:mg:641 From ARRL website posted 04/20/2016

What you see on the news is only the tip of the iceberg of what really happened as a result of the devastating April 16 earthquake in

Ecuador, Michigan physician Rick Dorsch, NE8Z/HC1MD, told ARRL.

Since the 7.8 magnitude quake hit while most people were at home finishing dinner, “thousands of people” remain buried in the rubble

of collapsed buildings, although some have been found alive. Dorsch and his wife Maria, HC1MM, also a physician, have been helping

to handle health-and-welfare traffic via EchoLink, which is connected to the Ecuadorean interlaced national 2 meter repeater network.
