The net was more fun than usual tonight. Three stations in UT including Jeff N1SC in Lehi,UT. NBEMS Ops are a natural fit for the ORCA net. NBEMS and EMCOMM Ops will find our digital traffic practice very useful. ORCA assumes check-ins will have formal traffic, practice traffic, or keyboard to the net. These activities prepare us for personal communications and emergencies.

As the net increases in check-ins, we want to keep our messages and keyboarding around 2-3min so everyone has a chance to participate. While keyboarding may seem less important, it’s fundamental to digital communications. It’s as important as message handling in an emergency. Keyboard communications rely on typing skill and your ability to convey information briefly and concisely.

Again, nice work with FLAMP REPORTs. Our REPORT routine works OK in the roundtable setting. Most of our new members are already familiar with FLDIGI, FLMSG, & FLAMP. Much has changed over three years and we now do less basic FLDIGI instruction and more with the various modes, forms, and modules like FLAMP. Ops new to ORCA are more likely to be up to speed with FLDIGI, FLMSG, & FLAMP. They usually merge into the net like veterans. I think ORCA members will be instrumental in developing their local digital traffic handling groups.

Feel free to change mode from MFSK-32 as Brad WA7HHE did tonight. If it seems the band will support a faster mode, give it a try. We always switch back to MFSK-32 for REPORTs and all net business. I sometimes forget to switch back myself.

Mindy plans to add station information to the Net Report map. It will increase our understanding of modes and band conditions. Presently, the map is experiencing code issues after an update, but will be sorted out when we have time.

Thanks for coming to net a little early. Tonight, most stations were checked-in before 1930 making check-in much easier, leaving more time for practice. And, thanks for working with us tonight. The net ran smoothly and concluded in an hour and nine minutes. Not bad for 12 stations. I hope to see you all next week. 73 Doug K7KY

SB QST ARL ARLB014

ARLB014 Radio Amateurs Asked to Keep 7.060 MHz Clear for Ecuador Earthquake Emergency Traffic

In the wake of the April 16 earthquake in Ecuador, the Amateur Radio community is being asked to keep 7.060 MHz clear for “Cadena

HC” emergency traffic. DXpeditions operating RTTY on 40 meters are requested to keep pileups below 7.060 MHz. The 7.8 magnitude

earthquake has resulted in dozens of deaths and many more injuries.

The Cadena HC emergency frequency is now active and running 24 hours per day on 7.060 LSB. Hams in Ecuador have been

reported very busy coordinating search-and-rescue activities.

:mg:742 March 29 was designated by the Department of Veterans Affairs for a particularly poignant kind of event marking the 50th

anniversary of the Vietnam War. It suggested extending a belated welcome home to the returning troops denied such ceremonies in the

rancorous last months of combat.

The amateur radio community has another reason for remembrance. Few in its younger generation possess any idea of their predecess

ors’ wartime public service, or of the wide popularity and respect it won for ham radio. The following account is adapted from the

recently-published “Army MARS at 90—Helping Defend the Homeland” by Bill Sexton (N1IN).

Enjoyed the net tonight. Everyone had good signals into Brookings. Band conditions seem better than in the past few days, but seems

to be getting more noisy now.

Enjoying the beautiful weather. Doug and I caught a swarm of honey bees the other day. Now we have 2 hives. Saw another swarm

flying by the next day. Tried to follow, but lost them in a creek ravine. Hope to catch another or have them move in on their own into

our last empty hive.

k3 @ 40 watts to an 80 OVFD Vee at 35 feet.

I copied the image at 95%.

I messed up my hard drive on Sunday so have spent two days restoring things. It is nice to know that the places where I thought I

had backed up files I had not done so!

I just finished the macro’s on fldigi for the ORCA net only minutes ago.

I printed Don’s Wrap message here fine.

I printed Mindy’s wrap PERFECTLY.

Brad, WA7HHE, FLAMP would have made it at 20:00 L as signal is better then. Utah and Oregon signals and even CA stns come

up to at 20:00 L. I copied the Wrap’s from KW6JIM and A6NBG now.

It is a good practice to send TWO TXID’s before sending a file using FLAMP.

I don’t know if Brad takes it or what

W7GBB TU Bob nice report I’ve been doing the same HD dance here.. My WinXP box crashed six weeks ago and I just

got into the drive a few days ago… all files are there (-:
