I want to say directly what a great job everyone does on the net. Our net is a bit more demanding than other digital nets and it’s remarkable how well the net flows around the inevitable errors and glitches. It’s even more remarkable to see this when I’m off track and you take up the slack and the net retains it’s momentum and balance. I occasionally fall behind with under-the-hood housekeeping and lose track of some details. Mindy helps me manage net activity and maintain or regain my focus. You can see why I was anxious to get her antenna repaired.

Check-in was much smoother tonight with the early stations spread out over ten minutes. The pile-up last week flustered me, but I think I’ve learned a thing or two and it should go easier from now on.

Thanks for coming a few minutes early to make check-in easier. Printing your wfID is a big help. I see and note them with Mindy’s help. If I don’t list your wfID, print it again. Please use horizontal orientation for wfID. It takes longer to read the whole call printed vertically and I can miss the beginning or end if I’m focused elsewhere. Especially six character calls. Thanks.

Keep wfID(VIDEO-ID) in mind while reading the net log. wfID’s are not reflected in the log and it may seem NCS is talking to a station that has not called. You can to fill in the blanks yourself.

We missed the Eureka,CA Ops tonight. They hold their ARC meetings the first week of the month. Jaye KE6SLS was with us early on. Bob W7GBB brought his friend Wes AA7OK who was monitoring from Bellevue,WA. We missed Ken K7IFG too. Ken is active on numerous digital nets and broadcasts digital bulletins prior to our net and the Friday evening Oregon Digital Net. W1EEP is a new callsign for Gene in Pine Valley,UT. He was KF7VWT. I thought we had two Ops named Gene and Ed. Edward is Genes middle name. Oops! Welcome to Dick WB6DIK in Palm Desert,CA Dick checked in&out, but rejoined for the comment round.

The REPORT round following a FLAMP message is working rather well. I flubbed it tonight when I prompted Rick N6IET for a REPORT when we had already completed one REPORT round. I was tracking the stations that CONFIRMED or needed blocks and prompted Rick for a REPORT. No wonder he was confused. Normally, we move on to the next station after one REPORT round. Stations that don’t complete in one round may fill the message after net. Formal traffic will always be completed to the recipient.

ORCA now has regular members in Utah and beyond. I’m including QTH in the check-in/rotation list to make signal and reception reports more meaningful. Our signal and reception reports have improved over the years. New members often bring wider perspective and new focus to the net. Sharing knowledge is one of the best attributes of Amateur Radio Operators.

Thanks for taking time to work with us tonight. We appreciate your participation and hope to see you again next week. 73 Doug K7KY NCS

ORCA Announcements 05/apr/16

Tonight we take another look at reducing digital doubles

using a pre-tone. Although it’s quite simple, it takes a little

practice to accomplish smoothly. It’s aleady made a difference.

Nice work on handling FLAMP REPORTs and RELAY. We are gaining

skill with this app rapidly.

Read weekly Net Report/Log: http://orcadigitalnet.com/reports/

Reports are posted to the website, usually by Wednesday. If you

want email notice of Report posting and other net events, send

send your address to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

well, next week, I guess.. OK I want to do another quick demo of using the pre-tune feature to prevent doubles. You can see quite

a few Ops are already ussing this idea and it’s already working well. Jaye KE6SLS has refined the prcess quite well. All it takes it

tappintg the TUNE button twice and watcfhing the wf for traffic… here it goes… < K7KY

Mindy, I can tell that your antenna has been repaired. You’re back up to snuff. Almost as strong as Doug. :-(

Does anybody know what the flamethrower noise is that makes it presence known across the 80 meter

band almost at random? That’s what it sounds like to me – a very wide noise signal.

DE WA7HHE- GOOD TO HEAR WB6DIK DICK ON THE NET AND SHAKING OUT SOME OF THAT DIGITAL DIRT LOOSE AGAIN.

npe eWB6DIK TU Dick i missed some as Brad was on top of some… got most and we will always be working onthese things

hre come when you can we’re glad to hve you.. < K7KY

ALL ORCA a note before we close… you can see how easily doubles happen in digital… the pre-tone is helpful for sure. When

we’re moving along inthe net, you don’t need to send the pre-tone. for example, when I’m calling a station everyone knows who should

tx next but when we come to a moment like we just had, I ask for any more comment anyone may answer so it’s the time for

pre-tone when only one station is expected, no need to send the tone….. I hope that make sense last call for anything <

K7KY

de W7GBB

The pre-transmit tone only works when a station is heard; when they are not heard that should be defined by the network area. de

Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB.
