80m was good for most stations tonight. Dropping back an hour for DST this weekend should make decoding easier, for our Eastern members in particular. Gov’t officials tease the elimination of DST every year. There must be powerful economic DST upsides. 80m is usually more user-friendly in Winter, even in a weak Solar Cycle.
NBEMS Exercise will continue experimenting w/new THOR modes, they’re certainly promising. MFSK & THOR have proven robust and dependable. We’ll be using the new modes often for NBEMS Exercise to learn the subtle difference. It will help us choose the better mode for condx quickly when time is critical.
Tonight I sent a long TUNE b4 net, radio LOCKED @ 3.581 & FLDIGI @ 1500wf, enabling stations to LOCK NCS. From my perspective, only 3 stations were off 1500. The station I copied @ 1492 copied me @ 1508. Two were slightly off. Others may have found me off freq, but didn’t report. Their signals were @ 1500 here. The 20m Test Net uses this routine. It worked better for us. When NCS is off-frequency, so goes the net. MFSK-32 tolerates mis-tuning about 16hz.
Late addition: 30m Propagation Test Net, hasty observations. I easily forget Don AB1PH’s purpose in these Tests; Propagation. I’ve been hoping this leads to reestablishing a Nat’l digital training net similar to the old SATERN Digital Emergency Net. Eastern Ops are used to working THOR-11,40mpm, off-freq-tolerant; Western Ops are used to MFSK-32, 120wpm, off-freq-intolerant. Western & Eastern digital routines & experience differ more than I anticipated. A ton of useful info is already available; I don’t know how to organize it and extrapolate patterns. I wish we could upload to a trustworthy AI for pattern analysis.

Tonight’s NBEMS Exercise entails creating a plaintext(.txt) file w/FLMSG or any Text Editor. Save a little time by Copying all
entries you need and deleting entries & text you don’t need after Pasting. Next session, the 1st Tuesday of November, Bruno
KG7VVN will conduct the NBEMS Exercise. You too can conduct ORCA NBEMS Exercises. It’s a bite-size introduction to NCS
tasks. We never know when it will fall to us to standup an emergency net. While you many not feel totally qualified, you’ll know
enough to begin a Roster and handoff when a seasoned NCS arrives. In emergencies, we won’t know in advance who’s

The 2nd 20m Transcontinental Propagation Test Net last week was another success. 40+ stations checked in w/Don
AB1PH/NCS in Maine & Jaye KE6SLS/NCS in California. Don scheduled another Propagation Test Net tomorrow evening on 30m:

Western NCS will again be Jaye KE6SLS. If you missed the 1st/2nd 20m net, try to work Wednesday’s 30m net; this experimen
tal net has garnered significant interest across the country. Don KJ7VGV will Relay skip zone stations. If a Nat’l Digital Training/E
mergency Net interest you, tune in & participate. Future net schedule & format will be determined by participants.
Our training prepares us for nets where we have no previous experience. Pre-Tone b4 TX. Lock on NCS signal, wherever it is.
Disable TxID to save energy, bandwidth, and net-time. There’s a wide range of digital knowledge and skills engaged in this
Transcontinental Test. Off frequency and unlocked stations w/TxID active drive other unlocked stations off frequency. Our 1st
Test net ranged from 1477 to 1530wf. Hats-Off to Western Ops for showcasing excellent networking conventions.
An undocumented FLDIGI Macro pitfall we discovered a few years ago also has an upside. We don’t include Macro Tags in files
(like this file) we call w/<FILE> Tag. The Macro Parser will replace Tags w/variables or leave a blank when it can’t locate a
variable. This Announcement text was pasted into the TX buffer to avoid engaging the Macro Parser. This odd feature is also
useful. We can generate a single file to be used by multiple Ops w/o each Op editing in personal data. Western Digital Net is a
handy example. A single Preamble file can be used by multiple NCS by substituting Tags for CALLSIGN, Name, QTH, City, ST,
Antenna, etc. When this file is called by <FILE>, Macro Parser will replace Tags w/variables stored in Configure/Misc/Operator-St
ation/. Each NCS can execute the same unedited file. It’s an FLDIGI oddity we can put to use. If you discover other application
s, let us know.
Next month we’ll revisit our Comment Macro. Many already use this Macro. If you haven’t configured a Comment Macro,
please add it to your Macro set. We’ll experiment with adding Tags to your comments. Comment Macro and more are available

I do quite good on 30 but it also has very interesting skip patterns too, so it will be interesting tomorrow during that test! I will
log what I see as I am really interested myself in seeing the pattern for my QTH.

ORCA < WA7JYK – Matt’s N6FPV use of MFSK128 almost caught me off guard. When I saw the transmit markers move out to
the edge of the filter I was using I immediately used a macro to widen the filters. My software successfully decoded the
message. Macros are good tools! Oddly John’s KS6M transmission put fldigi in a THROB mode. The goblins and ghosts are at
large 🙂
Thanks to NCS for the heads up on using a wider mode. That never occurred to me.

I read a couple interesting articles about our government. One mentioned a 1.5 trillion
deficit and another 1.7 deficit. Our debt payment on that was just under 500 billion and
it is estimated that by the end of next fiscal year we will have a 1 trillion debt payment.
Doesn’t that give you a warm and fuzzy feeling.

Note to ops, new versions of FLDIGI/FLAMP, need one for the other to
work correctly. Announced today on the NBEMS groups.io thing from Dave.
This station doesn’t have access to the latest FLDIGI apps. Though it
is fully developed and originated from Linux OS, the developers stopped
making it available several years ago for linux users unless they want
to build it from scratch. Odd how they provide mac & ms versions w/o
making them build from scratch. Sigh.
After all our Humboldt emergency nets, I came back into the radio shack
to call the Western Country Cousin’s Net on 3970. Many of the normally
easy copy stations were difficult to hear. Both in Arizona. Don’t know
if we had a solar storm or what. Hoping tonight, band will be kind. 🙂
Lamar tipped me off that the ISS is now testing their new amateur radio
equipment and sending down Slow Scan TV images. After I finished with
#2 radio, I switched it up to 145.800 and copied 12 images over-night
and this AM. In the weee hours this morning, I was awakened by the
tell-tale tune of the SSTV as I forgot to turn off the volume! TU Lamar!
Was able to copy AMRRON msg today. They xmit at 1300PT on 14,109.5
at 1470Hz each Tuesday, typically originating from Idaho.
I will be the western NCS for tomorrow’s 30m digital test. I have very
little experience on 30m and don’t know how band will react nor my
station antenna (210′ doublet) .. Rick k0kex was asked to be the mid-
west NCS, but Rick had other priorities to deal with. I hope Don will
find a suitable mid-west relay. However, I am immensely proud of the
ORCA/WDN op’s skill they exhibit during these tests! They are locked
on NCS, use pre-tone and send out the call as requested by NCS. This
will be my last NCS for this “discovery net” as I feel I am setting a
poor example with current format, yet wish this net a success and
hope they will find/parse/understand how ORCA developed and implemented
our very functional protocols.
I took the time to add my comments to the FCC regarding their fantastic
idea of making 60m a qrp band. . . I fear they are using this band for
low laying fruit, and will be back looking to remove more of our bands.

Hmmm…I have K7KY/NCS @1508 this eve.and everyone else @1500. Locked on NCS per instructions before the net but am
back @1500 now.
My understanding of the Lock function is that it only affects the TX freq.of the locked usr‰nd has nothing to do with where
that user recieves from on the wf. Also, I turn off RXId to better control my RX on unruly nets (i.e. NOT ORCA).

today. It was Ken k7ifg I was thinking about. He hasn’t checked in
w/me for many months now and I hope he is well. Miss his check-ins!

work a lot 1Khz above us with the regular group there I’ve wondered abt his health.. he’s probably one of my age peers btu

Okay, I didn’t know his age, just used to have him check in fairly frequently on
my MOnday emergency digital net. I will keep good thoughts of him and hope he is
in good health and spirits. I’ll keep an eye on the WF for him!
