A remarkable net by any standard tonight. I’ve not been feeling well for a couple days and spent most of Tuesday revising the website to reflect our change to digital band only. Next I revised my fldigi macros to facilitate digital check-in. Normally, Mindy & I run a couple messages between our stations before the net to insure we’re operational. Tonight, I used all the time right up to net programming. When I called the net, I was sending gibberish and also not decoding anyone. Everything looked correct with my station and I could not figure out what was wrong. We called Paul KE6NVU to take over until I could operate. He had no preamble or net protocols to guide him and did his best with what he had and who he could hear. Hearing only two stations, he connected with them, copied their traffic, and closed the net.

Mindy heard stations calling and reopened the net and did a good job of keeping things organized while I sorted things out. And, once I found the problem it was easy to fix and I was back on the air. A couple weeks ago I configured flrig to work with fldigi and the KX3. Every time I ran flrig it somehow corrupted the KX3, an SDR. I had to reinstall the KX3 firmware each time. So, something in flrig has altered the configuration of fldigi and w/o flrig running, fldigi would not send or receive correctly. As soon as I started flrig, the station worked correctly and I was back on the air.

I relieved Mindy and we tried to get back to normal. A good thing actually, that Humboldt Ops were at their monthly ARC meetings and net attendance was light. Soon after I returned, three more stations checked in and we proceeded as usual, but without a distributed rotation list. I must admit I was rattled and not really on top of things. After reading the net log, I see things weren’t as messy as it seemed at the time. Your experience may have been different.

Anyway, we got on with business with a combination of keyboarding and traffic. JB KR5RR came prepared to send flmsg traffic, a first for him. His first attempt changed modes, but his TXID was not enabled and no one copied the file. At this juncture, an unidentified station transmitted, UNBELIVEABLE. One capitalized word w/o ID. In the digital world, all-caps is considered shouting. I hope we don’t see this again.

Admittedly, it was initially a difficult and frustrating net. Still, there’s few among us who haven’t made mistakes on the net. We’ve all been new at this at some point. We have the good fortune of many competent digital Ops who’ve helped us all. And, we certainly want newcomers to feel welcome and help them learn their way around the net. This is a very friendly and supportive group of operators and I think someone was particularly frustrated and just popped off without thinking.

We helped JB with some fldigi/flmsg settings and he soon sent two ICS-213 messages that printed 100% and opened flmsg. Another station new to ORCA is Keith K7KEV in Forest Grove, Oregon. He’s new to fldigi, but familiar with digital radio. He also gave us information on his equipment and antenna. Ken K7IFG checked in with Mindy and sent a message with flamp. I don’t know how many stations copied it correctly and couldn’t determine this from the net log.

Don’t be discouraged by a little confusion this week. Digital check in is routine for digital nets. It’s how the ORCA DIGITAL NET began. It takes a bit longer than voice nets, but we will smooth it out and have our net operations in order soon. And, we can always easily QSY to voice for more extensive conversation.

There were some good suggestions this week regarding net operations. One idea is to have NCS enable TXID and all other station enable RXID with TXID disabled. This should keep us all in the same mode, but does not address the occasional problems of stations transmitting off 1500wf. This I think we can solve by each station enabling LOCK @ 1500. Staying locked on 1500 only effects your transmit frequency. AFC will follow drifting signals regardless of LOCK. This is how fldigi accommodates split QSOs. With each station locked @ 1500 we should only see the small drift generated by band conditions and our radios. Most current radio drift very little. I would like to know your thoughts on this suggestion.

While asking for your thoughts on net protocol, I’m also interested in your thinking about net message content. I’ve been OK with most messages crossing the net; they each create message handling practice. I’ve heard a little grumbling about rant messages now and then. Most of our messages are actually interesting and germane to our hobby. Occasionally we see messages clearly in the realm of religion or politics with no radio relevance. The ORCA DIGITAL NET belongs to the members and I’m interested in your thoughts. Take a moment to review the net log (attached at the bottom) and tell me what you think.

Thanks for participating and don’t be put off by infrequent disorder. And, please don’t take offense with an unkind remark. Some people don’t handle frustration as well as others. This is really a great group of Ops who work well together and are very willing to stick around and help stations with problems and configuration issues. We all have something to contribute. I hope to see you all back again next week. I’ll be on frequency before net time to take early check-ins while we make this transition. 73 Doug K7KY

:sb:55 VOA RADIOGRAM: Two years of strange noises on shortwave

:mg:1342

This week VOA Radiogram celebrated their 100th digital transmission. Below is an interesting observation about MFSK32:

Reception reports and audio files received from listeners

indicate that MFSK32 not only works well, it works better than

voice on analog shortwave. In conditions where a typical voice

broadcast is difficult to comprehend, e.g. my voice introduction

to each VOA Radiogram, the text is often copied 100%. Thus, the

introduction of software has extended the communications

capability of shortwave broadcast transmitters, just at a time

when those transmitters are being dismantled at an alarming rate.

If a country blocks our Internet content, it will probably also

jam our shortwave broadcasts. The text modes have been tested

against Chinese jamming of VOA and Radio Free Asia, and Cuban

jamming of Radio Mart–. Remote receivers in or near the target

countries show the text modes slicing through some intense

jamming.

MFSK32 occupies only about 500 Hz of the 2000 Hz bandwidth

available in each sideband of an AM shortwave signal. New modes

in development use all of that available 2000 Hz, to some extent

for additional speed, but even more for additional error

correction. This would result in a text delivery technology

especially well- suited to shortwave broadcasting, and perhaps

even more resistant to jamming.

Danon.. Please stand by a few more minutes…

JB… I think flmsg was set to a different mode than MFSK32. If so, it changed the mode in fldigi before sending. Near the bottom of flmsg you will find the mode setting box. Also, and most important, you need to go into the

configure tab of flmsg and set it to defer to the mode set in fldigi. And, be sure to enable TXID at the top right of fldigi. While you’re there, also enable RXID..

On SSB Net Control can hear a pileup and sort it out. I don’t think that works on digital, but I don’t know what we

can do.

Otherwise, my setup is working fairly well and I’m starting to build a set of macros as I go.

I have my bandpass set narrow, about 1400 Hz wide, centered on 3595+1500. I do this to keep FLDIGI from seeing other stuff near our frequency. I don’t think I would want FLDIGI to sniff out RSIDs over a 3KHz passband, then

suddenly jump to a different modem and freq. We all use RXid only and slave our Tx freq to our RX freq.

We need to deal with the fact that some transceivers do not get the 3595 exactly right and that causes the centerline to drift.
