We’re late publishing the Net Report. We’re as busy as the proverbial one-armed paper hanger. We have Chickens at 3 different ages. 10mos, 2mos, & 5wks. Plus 2 Geese @ 2yrs, and 4 Goslings @ 3wks. They have to be kept separate and have different needs. Mindy planted 24 Sweet Potatoes last week and 3 days later, the older Geese slipped under the fence and ate every one. Rats! We have lots of starts in pots, but we’re slow getting them in the ground. There’s too much to do in too little time. We hope to get this Report out on Thursday.

Thanks for your patience with an extra measure of nagging lately. We know we’re actually only talking to a couple Ops when we remind you about net Protocols. 98% of the net works ORCA perfectly. This level of personal focus is fundamental to efficient digital networking.

In a group of experts, errors are more outstanding. We’re all more likely to make mistakes while learning new tasks. Those mistakes are normal; we expect them. Nearly everyone self-corrects. We’re reluctant to address errors on-air and embarrass someone. We first try to resolve them by email, especially when errors become routine. As NCS, we’re ultimately responsible for how the net operates. That said, we’re also just two more members of the group with additional responsibility of Net Control.

ORCA is a training/practice platform for experienced digital Ops and a learning environment for incoming Ops. Practicing veterans are a teaching event for incoming Ops. ORCA isn’t structured to teach basic PC computer and entry-level NBEMS apps. Most Ops learn these skills on local VHF training nets. When the regular Ops practice, they’re the instructors for incoming Ops. That’s why it’s important that net members follow Protocols and Conventions. Incoming Ops are observing and emulating net operations.

If you work the net with TxID active or send a Pre-Tone when NCS calls you, incoming Ops are getting the wrong message about the importance of net Protocols. The net runs efficiently because 98% of the members follow Protocol. It’s that simple. We’re setting a correct example for new Ops and we’re practice our skills correctly. Practicing incorrectly is counterproductive. No one wants to waste valuable time and energy.

Under pressure, we don’t rise to the occasion; we fall back to the level of our training. Train smart. Train often.

We’ve not had time to develop further Macro experiments. We’ll try to have one ready for the 2nd June session. Meanwhile, continue experimenting on your own. If you have ideas for Macro experiments, we’d like to hear them.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight is the last Advanced NBEMS Exercise this Month. Next session, will have a Basic NBEMS Exercise.

Our close associate, Western Digital Net, has reached a crossroad. Steve K6ETA is WDN’s Developer and Net Control Station. His work schedule has changed. He can’t continue running WDN on Thursday evenings. WDN needs a Net Control Station. This is current and immediate.  WDN is not a difficult net to run, but running a net takes commitment, time, and energy. A reliable station with a strong signal is also necessary.

WDN can be run by a single Op or a group that rotates responsibility. Contact Steve if you’re interested in running WDN.

WDN processes more QSTs than QTCs these days. No surprise when there’s no urgent Traffic. That would change quickly in an emergency. Emergencies look to be more likely than usual this Summer.

Although our main Training focus is digital networking and digital traffic-handling, we’re also interested in Situational Awareness and Reading Comprehension. Both are learned skills and fundamental to Emergency Communications. There are multiple opportunities to practice these skills every session.

I watched a youtube video about a report of the different shortages we’re facing. I could not copy the link for a reference but I’m sure many of you are aware we are headed for worse times. I hope all of you are taking notice and preparing appropriately. Doug and Mindy the amount of time you spend in preparing and providing a seamless net is worth noting. Doug sorry I didn’t see the relay request sooner during the exercise maybe next time. To all the Ops out there, we all need each other with such a diversity of skill sets. Not much to say. Just got back from working on the rental all day, back at it tomorrow. Getting her ready for next tenant.

Antenna broke again last night while practicing w/ Doug/Mindy and Don (KJ7VGV). Ladder line broke on both sides, repaired with aircraft environmental splices, seems to work well. Added the top half of a fishing pole to try to prevent the wind from working the copper conductor to failure. I hope it will smooth out the bending from the relentless winds we have here. Then FLDIGI lost the sound card settings and had to do quick T/S w/ Brad WA7HHE to get on air tonite!

This ex sounds like a very good training ex, well done NCS’s!

Bone tired.  This is second week working bit by bit on my HEX beam. I now have all the little bits installed on the spreaders.  Now I need to wire and test new rotator (spell check does NOT like it when I type rotator!)

Got a terrible call early this morning.  My neighbor, Ann, fell in her house and couldn’t get up.  She started banging on her window and my neighbor Karen heard her about 6:15am and got her medical help. She’s in her 80’s and tonight I learned she broke her hip, badly. I feel so bad for her, my heart is breaking.  I will help with taking
care of her kitty, along with two other neighbors.  Just hoping for the best possible recovery for Ms Ann.  Bless her heart.

Thursday afternoon is the planned RE-ERECTION of the HEX beam. Will have a nice pizza for the helpers.  I have REALLY missed having the HEX available for listening to the high bands.  What an amazing antenna!

Still in LIMBO with my linux OS (Ubuntu.)  I reached out to the HAMLIB developers and they provided zero assistance with ham control software. Haven’t done anything since all my energy is on the antenna, but next
week I’ll resume the grind and search for a better linux OS

kj7whe is a new comer to the WDN.  I worked him following the last net and am excited to see him coming aboard.  Make sure you read up on the protocols for each net Barry!

Tnx for the net.  Keep an ear on your scanners, the fire situation is severe   Take care and stay well!
