——————-

We anticipated difficult band condx tonight, but no. Our chosen FLAMP Exercise modes were softballs and the Exercise was complete in two passes. Phil KJ7GQW didn’t respond to REPORT calls and we relogged him ‘in&out’ after the Exercise. Thanks for your focus and attention during the Comment round. It went smoothly, like you’d been doing it all along. One point we’d overlooked, Steve K6ETA pointed out after net. Not everyone on the net copies other net stations as well as NCS. Stations receiving the hand-off may not copy. NCS needs to step in. That’s easy to fix; next session, we’ll send the current roster b4 Comments and step in when needed.

Calling in&out stations for Comments by ARRL District also works well.  Tonight, we didn’t have many comments by monitors, but we should have fewer doubles with large Rosters. Adjusting ORCA routines for larger Rosters has been challenging. It’s hard to accommodate more Ops w/o reducing useful practice. Our * ck-in protocol works well in limiting the FLAMP Exercise to ten Ops. We’re always interested in your observations and comments about net operations.

Ten veteran ORCA Ops have an optional ck-in protocol, ie: K7KY*. When they ck-in like this, or we later assign them an *, they are not called for the FLAMP Exercise or Traffic Round. This enables us to limit the Exercise to ten stations and keep net time between 1-1.5hr. Thanks for your attention and focus; we try for 1hr nets, and not to exceed 1.5hr.

Five of ten stations returned the Optional Exercise in the Traffic Round, but no one earned a cigar. Me either.  Two stations sent three lines of the FLAMP Preamble. The Exercise asked for three sentences from the Preamble and identified the first sentence. The sentence contained all necessary information. Next time, I’ll specify the ORCA Preamble. Others returned the Exercise instructions. It was not a typical FLAMP Exercise, but representative of how you will shift keyboard reports to FLAMP Forms before forwarding. It’s not easy to scroll up in the RX buffer while occupied with net operations.  We know; we have to do it now and then while running the net.  We’ll try to further clarify Exercise instructions.

COVID-19 is rapidly expanding exponentially.  Initial Official instructions to forgo face masks was a major misstep aimed at conserving inadequate supplies.  If they didn’t help prevent infection, our medical professionals would not be seeking them everywhere possible. Nor would they be reusing disposable masks. Masks will definitely reduce your risk of exposure. Stay home as much as possible. If you have to mix with others, wear a mask and gloves. Disinfect yourself upon returning home. Disinfect everything that could be contaminated before bringing it into your home. A little inconvenience now may save you and your family from a nasty and potentially fatal illness. See our COVID-19 page for COVID-19 insight and preventative tactics.

Bruce KB7VX’s wife has been ill for three weeks now. Her doctor doesn’t think she’s contracted COVID-19 and declines having her tested. Hopefully, she has a tenacious cold. Please keep her and Bruce in your thoughts and prayers.

We hope to see you tomorrow evening at WESTERN DIGITAL NET, Thursday, 1930p/0230z, 3.581, MFSK-32, Steve K6ETA/NCS. WDN has been providing timely COVID-19 information and updates. Thanks for working with us tonight. We look forward to working with you again next Tuesday evening.  73 Doug K7KY

ANNOUNCEMENTS 24/Mar/2020

Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex163.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLAMP
exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in
the Traffic Round with FLAMP.

For the Comment round tonight, we’ll try a Roundtable tactic Steve K6ETA
used on Western Digital Net a few weeks ago. We’ll turn the net over to the
first Active station. That station will pass it to the next Active station
(skipping indented in&out stations). The last station will return the net to
NCS (BTN). NCS will call for follow-ups and questions. If a station doesn’t
begin in 10-12sec, the following station goes. You will manage the Comment
Round. You need to keep your Roster current with late ck-ins, Active or In&Out,
and early-out.

Another Comment Round experiment: Following Active Op Comments, time
permitting, we take comments from monitoring stations. With large Rosters
and distant stations, we have more doubles. Tonight, we’ll call for monitoring
station comments by ARRL District. This worked well last week. Thanks for your
patience and support while we try new tactics for managing the net.

During the Traffic and Comment rounds, feel free to deviate from our usual
focus on radio topics and comment on COVID-19.

Thanks for emailing the Test images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

Have FLAMP open. Stay focused.
Exercise is interactive and brisk.

Had some scary news today. I was talking to my father (KI7YCE) and one of his local Arizona HAM friends has been exposed to COVID-19 through his daughter who is a

school teacher in Arizona.httvÑll isolated here and working remotely at the University. Lots of virtual meetings and class today! We did get out to the cabin in the

afternoon though. It was really nice to be out in the woods!

We will be doing our Monthly Radio Club meeting on the Radio (imagine that!) this month Should be fun!

Stay safe and healthy!

Wet, cloudy and rainy day here in Humboldt. Tomorrow we should have some sun and I know my solar panels will be in high gear charging the station batteries!

It is important that we use the <> to wrap long URLs in. Many editors, email clients etc will break a line and make the url fail, by putting them into those brackets,

the URL will remain intact. <https://www.google.com> for instance.

Yes, I have a mask here and use it when I have to get food! Good info Mindy.

Getting a lot of things done around the home these days — workshop and barn never looked so clean and neat, reloaded all my brass that has been sitting in the tumbler

for months, still feeling well, working hard every day.

Unfortunately, it is not so with my wife, who continues to suffer with a persistent dry cough, feeling weak and lousy. She went to see doctor again yesterday, but it

was different this time — dr behind plexiglass barrier, one drives by the window, clinic closed to walk-ins. Can’t say I blame them with 46 doctors dead of Covid in

Italy.

Dr says wife still needs chest xray, but, again, is reluctant to send her to the hospital to get it done. Told her that, whatever she has, it has to be viral, since

the arithromycin did not help her. Again, wife requested Covid testing and again, doc refused to write her a RX for testing. Told her that it cannot be Covid because

she is in her third week with this and if it were Covid, she should be much sicker. Instead, a different prescription for the cough, something stronger I guess,

haven’t had time to look at what she is taking.
Walgreens and Rite-Aid are closed to walk-in patients; as she had to queue in a long line of cars and go through the drive-through. I am worried about my wife, hoping

and praying she recovers and that the doc is right. After 43 years of marriage, I would be lost without her.

Some of my colleagues in hospital are telling me that they are being forced to use one mask for 5 days before they get a new one.

Sri… no signal reports tonight.

Good to see all on the WF tonight. Band not the best, but workable with good copy on most. Sounds like the next 2 weeks will be a challenge for our country with

regards to COVID-19. Wishing everyone good health and safety in these uncertain times.

The COMMENT round was fun using WDN standards Well done everyone!
