We can’t really say the band was awful, but it did have some major dips. Prior to the net, I had an 80m QSO with Jaye KE6SLS in Eureka,CA @ 5w each, 100mi. By check-in time, he was uncopyable @ 40w. Later in the net, Jaye was back and printing well. Tom KF7RSF checked in&out from Bandon,OR with a solid signal tonight. Other Bandon stations have had difficulty checking in. We still have very little short skip, but it does come and go. Distant stations are all doing well.

The FLAMP exercise went well again tonight. Thank you to Steve K6ETA for relaying blocks 5,6 to Gene W1EEP. Although Gene is in UT and usually has good path to NCS, QRN & QSB can easily scramble a block or two. It’s interesting to note how well this exercise goes. Currently, most of our regular Ops have been with us for awhile and have this exercise wired. Sometimes it does go a bit astray when new Ops enter the net, but they’re usually up to speed quickly.  The pace is brisk and you need to be familiar with FLAMP’s REPORT, FETCH, & RELAY features; they’re essential for efficient traffic handling.

ORCA welcomes Joe W7LUX in Flagstaff,AZ. He had a strong clean signal here tonight. Rick N6IET was back with a good signal from his balcony in Los Angeles. We had lots of in&outs tonight, leading to a shorter net. We had time to check on the monitoring stations and some of them joined us for comments.

The FLAMP exercise asked who could work 160m and who would be interested in a Top Band roundtable on Thursday evenings. I was surprised to find ten of us interested. After closing the net, we gathered six stations on 1.835. 160m was better copy in some instances than 80m. I copied Jaye KE6SLS well, but some Ops did not copy him at all. My keyboard muscles were already tired and I didn’t get to 160m sharp as a tack. Actually, I was a bit disorganized and wasn’t prepared to keep track of things. My typing deteriorated from there. Here’s the 160m Ops. I missed recording most of the signal:

K6ETA Steve Petaluma,CA
KE6SLS Jaye Eureka,CA S-9, 6db
N0LKC/P Clifford Quartzsite,AZ S-8, -4db
WA7HHE Brad Cedar City,UT
W7LUX Joe Flagstaff,AZ
KK6RKY Eric Trinity Center,CA
K7KY Doug Brookings,OR

We agreed to meet on Thursday evenings at 0300z/1900p, 1.837+1500 MFSK-32 for a roundtable. I’ll do NCS initially and we can share this task as you like. NCS for a roundtable will be easy. Video ID will be useful for ck-in and late ck-in. Jaye printed his VideoID twice on 160m; it was easy to read even with a tight BPF. I have the filter off for ck-in and active during the net to eliminate some noise. VideoID is an excellent way to get NCS’s attention when a station other than NCS is transmitting.

Here are a couple of images from tonight:

RX: W1EEP UT
RX: K6ETA CA

FLDIGI choked late-net and zapped my log. We’ll use Mindy’s log for the Net Report and append my 160m Log. Thanks for working with us tonight and thanks to those who joined us on Top Band. We appreciate your support and participation. Learning and practicing with you is a pleasure.

73 Doug K7KY

ANNOUNCEMENTS 30 January 2018

Tonight’s Optional FLAMP exercise distributes ‘ex54.txt’, an FLMSG
/FLAMP exercise using the FLMSG ICS-213 form. Complete the instructions
and send the new file to NCS during TRAFFIC round using FLAMP, or send
your own practice traffic or QRU.

Strange band condx? Last night I couldn’t ck-in to the Humboldt Digital
Net, 90mi south. I could barely see NCS, but not copy. NCS didn’t hear me.
But, Clifford N0LKC/P relayed me in from Quartzsite,AZ. His signal was
10over9 & 11db here; remarkable from a field antenna @ 15w. We
subsequently had a QSO on 1.835mhz. Both @ 15w & solid copy.

There’s been some interest in a 160m digital roundtable on Thursday
evening. If this interests you, let me know. We could create a digital
time/freq on Thursday where u are likely to find a QSO, or a regular
meeting. Other days may also work. We’ve had some successful digital
QSOs on 160m lately. If ur interested, let me know.

PRE-TONE:
Remember to use a brief PRE-TONE b4 TX when doubles are likely. No
PRE-TONE is needed while working NCS; only you and NCS are engaged.
If NCS asks, ‘Can anyone relay that weak station?’, send a PRE-TONE
b4 responding; others may also respond. Our diligent use of pre-tone
is a big factor in reducing doubles during nets and improving net
discipline. Pre-toning when doubles are likely is an unmistakable
mark of an experienced digital Operator.

Net Report posted as soon as we can…

I thought Brad was the highest stn on ORCA, but you’ve taken the award. as to monitoring stations, I think most of them are just lurking a while while the get the flow of the net… ORCA is a bit more demanding than most digital nets. GE to net and all. 12 watts here and batteries are precious tonight. I wonder howa waTw what block numbers need to be added to the block window and how I know when they are needed. I will listen for and look for that info. Will be moving later this week, possibly even on Thurs. Future propagation as I move east is an uncertainty; we shall see. My 160m capability is also somewhat tenuous but you can be sure I will always be trying. Resonance with my small footprint along with power and SWR relationships remains an interesting challenge here. Quartzfest set a record attendance this year. 73 to all, from Clifford in Quartzsite AZ N0LKC

Band sure seems set on going long these days and skipping the 50-120mi closeby stations at night. ORCA welcomes W7LUX Joe from Flagstaff AZ. I’m still trying to understand how to read forecasts for band propagation. N6IET Rick has pointed me to learning about ionograms. I think this will teach me quite a bit about understanding which freq is best for band condx. Not a quick read though. Great to see all on the WF. Always enjoy working with you all.

I have never used 160 meters but would like to try. I am not sure if my tuner can tune that band. Thanks for another nice net. I have been enjoying operatinlean t5½ ioøAT satellites AO-91 and AO-92. I have set up a low cost station for monitoring the telemetry with a $20 RTL-SDR device and SDR#. It works reasonably well for the cost! My trusty Icom 7100 didn’t have a low enough bandwidth to receive the Data Under Voice at about 100 Hz.

negative. only hear you Doug. I see you are saying freq will be 1.837. I just tested that freq and it is 2 s-units quieter than this freq (1.835) so that is
a VERY good thing. I am in middle of ac noise generator onthis freq. I didn’t hear Erik either, but at 10watts, i am not surprised, the bugger!

okay, btu Doug, I hope you printthis in the ORCQ report, would be interested
in knowing if any other stations hear me in Eureka!

I hope he has plenty of juice (jaye can type, really …!) he is in friggin Arizona! where the sun ALWAYS shines. he is in SUMMER 24/7. he
has NO excuse to be drained of juice! heeheeheee… Ihope he hears me and laughs out loud.

okay, I’m goin gto send… ops I’m going to send you a wav file of what I hear on top band….

thanks om.

KE6SLS < K7KY FB Jaye rest & dinner will be welcome although Clifford is in AZ he’s also in a rv and has more consumers than just the Yaesu & laptop.. I think he has to manage the juice closely.. still he get a pretty strong signal out of campgrounds with some ease it seems… anyway, we’ve made a beginning on Top Band I’m looking forward.. to some more fun this may lead to a CW spot too.. when ur tight for electricity, we go to the cheapest mode CW no computers (-: Clifford says he can work @ 10wpm and I’m getting so rusty I may not be able at all anyway cu next Thurs right around hr.. btu < K7KY
