Whew!! That was a challenging net… difficult band conditions, more complex Mode Shoot-Out, and lightning causing 5 Ops to secure their stations. Hope no one in UT experienced any equipment damage due to lightning. Propagation is such a fickle thing, stations in UT who usually have good reception suffered poor reception and stations in CA/NV who have previously had poor copy were able to report CONFIRMED for a change.
ORCA welcomes a new station, David N2RSN in Keno,OR. Prior to opening the net UT stations were talking to Aaron AG7GK in Mesa,AZ, but I couldn’t copy him. I tried to get him relayed, but no luck. Thanks to Fred KI7TPD for relaying Steve W7WSV. And thanks to Jaye KE6SLS for inspiration for tonight’s FLAMP question, “Did u know FLDIGI will RELAY received blocks even tho it has not completed the file?” Jaye recently learned about this by testing between 2 laptops.
We had a new feature tonight, transmitting the Signal Evaluation image with the Postamble. Opening and closing images will bookend band conditions during the net. Unfortunately, Gene W1EEP who always sends his test image, didn’t copy the 1st transmission due to poor band, then had to secure his station before the 2nd image was sent at net closing. Jaye KE6SLS sent his and you can see a slight change in conditions from net start to end. Locating and sending the images is good practice for computer-based digital operations. They illustrate band conditions and your reception of NCS.

Thanks for your patience when band conditions take a turn for the worse. Hope to see you on the WF next Tuesday!

Mindy W7ZAP
Notes on the FLAMP Exercise:
We were hoping band condx would be no worse than usual when we added a Mode Shoot-Out to the FLAMP exercise. The band was significantly worse. Distant stations had great difficulty; closer stations did much better. Jaye KE6SLS CONFIRMED both modes in Eureka,CA; Eureka is abt 100mi south of NCS. Running three evolutions in each mode in these condx was a bridge too far. It took a long time, but we did learn a lot about mode performance. With three passes in each mode, DominoEX CONFIRMED three messages, MFSK CONFIRMED eight. A significant difference. Thanks for your focus and attention during these complex FLAMP exercises. You are unlikely to encounter a digital Traffic or Emergency net organized as tightly as ORCA. Our exercises are designed to provide hands-on experience with all the FLAMP tools. In the real world you won’t need them all for every net, but if you do, you’ll be relaxed and ready.

ANNOUNCEMENTS 30/April/2019
To support a MODE SHOOT-OUT, the FLAMP exercise distributes the files
‘ex117.txt’ & ‘ex117A.txt’, for the FLDIGI/FLAMP/PC-EDITOR exercise. If
you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send either file to NCS in the
Traffic round.
During the FLAMP exercise, we’ll run a MODE SHOOT-OUT between DominoEX
and MFSK. We’ll make three passes with each mode. It will take a bit more time,
and should give more useful results. We need not CONFIRM every station to
generate useful data tonight. The 2nd file name will include ‘A’ (ex117A.txt).
If you CONFIRM both files, just send one to NCS in Traffic round.
Tonight we begin including the Signal Evaluation image with the Postamble.
Opening and closing images will bookend band condx during the net. Sending
these images to NCS by email will have them included in the weekly Net
Report. Locating and sending them by email is good practice for computer-
based digital operations.
A tip of our ORCA hat to Dave Freese W1HKJ, FLDIGI developer. Dave continues
to develop and polish the NBEMS suite. His patient technicial support for Amateur
radio operators is legendary. We’re also thankful for our regular ORCA members.
Your participation and support is crutial to ORCA DIGITAL NET. Without you
there would be no ORCA net. The regular members are not here so much for
training as for practice. It’s repeated practice that enables us to perform
complex routines in difficult circumstances. Your regular participation creates
an ideal learning event for newer digital Ops.
We’ve still not recovered the ORCA email list from Doug’s crashed Toughbook.
If you aren’t receiving email notice when the Net Report/Log is published,

Tnx Mindy
Tonight’s Mode Shoot-Out compares DominoEX and MFSK.
We’ll send the same file with different file-names.
We’ll make three passes with each mode; it will take
a little longer. We won’t need to CONFIRM the file
to every station tonight. We’ll total CONFIRMED &
FILLs for both modes to determine the winner.
We begin in DominoEX44 (312wpm, 1600hz), and fill in
DominoEX22 (160wpm, 524hz), & ‘EX16 (115wpm, 355hz).
Next we’ll send in MFSK128 (480wpm, 1920hz),and fill
in MFSK64 (240wpm, 460hz),& MFSK32 (120wpm, 630hz).

That concludes the exercise tnx 4 ur patience DomEX didn’t do so well in these condx but MFSK did much better Mindy is compiling the results… AK7ME Marty sri I don’t hv much time tonite this exercise is a bit more complex than the usual exercise and we’ve got lots going on @ this end when ur not on the roster, i get befuddled especially tonight btn < K7KY
Nice work Doug and to the net! Tough condx tonite.
Here’s the Mode Shoot-Out Compilation:
DOMEX44: 0 CONFRM/52 blocks missing
DOMEX22: 2 CONFRM/43 blocks missing
DOMEX16: 1 CONFRM/42 blocks missing
MFSK128: 2 CONFRM/39 blocks missing
MFSK64: 2 CONFRM/19 blocks missing
MFSK32: 4 CONFRM/14 blocks missing
Whew! That was a lot of work, but a great way to understand DOMEX vs MFSK.
Thanks for the ‘Shoot-out’ Doug.

Question, how do you xmt two back to back ID’s during mode change?
Did some tests with 8psk and will look forward to trying those modes on air soon. I fear the speed will be great but copy in less than perfect condx won’t be.
Would share some of this sunshine with the UT stations!

Everyone ready for the 7th Area QSO Party? They upped the points for Digital this year. SSB=2, CW=3, PSK/RTTY=4! I’ll be headed back to my favorite tri-county line.
Hope to hear you all on the air!
Tried MSFK 128 in the traffic round. Blip and DE KG7DMI? Not sure whats up with that. Quickly fell back to MFSK 32 and resent.
Thank you Mindy and Doug for another fun and intersting net.

Winter has returned today.
Light snow in Reno.
Winnamucca gained 6” of snow.
But is to be a warm weekend.
Suposed to freeze tonight, might be hard on the garlic.
Interesting shoot-out tonight. Surprised the a couple of the modes did not perform as I thought they would. Band conditions I guess.
See you Digi-Hams next week.
